Which is intersting in so far as i reckon most if the elite basketballers who play afl, whilst being good in traffic, are generally more outside players. Im rhinking watts, pendles, that poet player.Trac and maynard being two exceptions

A question for those of you with a little more insight/knowledge of such things please:

How far can a 26 year old rookie progress?

I read on this forum from time to time that Players reach their potential by the age of 25/26. So how far can a one game 26 year old ptogress?

At best probably 4-5 years. To get 100 games would be massive from this point and very unlikely. 

I know not everyone rates his opinion, but Garry Lyon on SEN yesterday mentioned that he thought Corey could turn into something special.  Can't remember his exact wording but he sounded pretty excited about what he could bring.

Last year he was very bullish about Clayton Oliver before 2017 started, so hopefully he has the same foresight on Corey.

This guy is a gun.This is the guy to watch in 2018.

His Final game for Casey was outstanding. Did I hear that he got 16 or 17 contested posessions? It was a cracker of a game.

I believe that Garry also thought that Mark Neeld would be Norm Smith reincarnated.  

Attended Corey's 'finals' game with Casey v a near AFL side in Richmond. He was simply outstanding. Very strong over the ball and good user.

Thought I saw  a real AFL player. Predict he will make massive improvement this year, barring injury

I think he'll most likely be a fringe player, but I could be wrong.  I like his strengths, but he lacks a bit of polish.  He'll play games, but I see him in the 23-30 bracket.

Tyson is ahead of him and I can't really see how you play both.

He is physically stronger than Tyson. So maybe he plays against some of the bigger bodied midfields...Also maybe Jones plays more off half back? I see him playing less minutes in the square...

Very much speculative at this stage.

A lot of people got their temperature rising about blokes like Viv Michie, Ben Newton and Ben Ken during the Roos era. I put Corey in that class. He COULD make it if all the cards fall his way (sufficient commitment , role to play and a lack of player in said role) but there is every chance he turns out as a project player who didn’t work out.

I hope that’s not the case but I’m just being realistic.

Maynard is a completely different kettle of fish and it would be a good idea for people to realise this and treat it as such .

The blokes you've mentioned have had/having careers as professional footballers and subsequently not cut it at AFL level. Maynard has spent all his formative years playing elite level basketball and is now into a second pre-season after playing dominant VFL games and showing some competency in one single AFL game. 

I think it's quite realistic to have high hopes for him given his back story.

Off topic, but why does everyone want to push jones back? It's clear he really loves a goal when he gets one and he's definitely earned the right to bag a few. I'd suggest an attacking mid role, half forward flanker at times. 

(Gussy is definitely a better half back option if a mid is being forced there)

Nope, I cannot recall this from Corey, either. He was a bright light that was hit hard and then a series of injuries. Hell, he settled quickly to 'have a go' at the ball. Teamwork was following...

It was early days but I remember one poster one poster, who has gone through a bit of a personal renaissance since, stating that Viv wouldn’t have been picked by as good a judge of talent as Paul Roos if he wasn’t a gun @Skuit

It was a different time as we were mostly filling out the list with stop gap measures (Bernie and Don aside) so we could maintain a veneer of competitiveness. We just didn’t know who would be a game changer and who wouldn’t.

I would agree @McQueen in regards to background. I was more referring to blokes who have shown a bit elsewhere in patches (in Corey’s case it has been mostly with Casey but a little with us) but haven’t been really given an opportunity yet.

From Wikipedia, if it is true then this fellow has impressive blood lines.

Given 3 or 4 years he should be a success ( Hey! Why not some optimism at this time of the year.)

Maynard's one game for the club was impressive enough and in hindsight, he probably should not have been dropped. His performance in that VFL final for Casey against Richmond was a standout and if he can match the strength and resilience he showed that day, he'll be a regular in the AFL next year.

I never saw Viv, Ben and Ben do what I have seen Corey do, so he is different. Also my temperature never rose a degree with those blokes.

Corey is a bigger unit and he just may raise a few temperatures this year. 

To dominate a midfield in a VFL final and have Morris hit you three times after you got rid of the ball, basically illegally and with all his power and then to shrug those hits off and continue to dominate is exciting. 

I think Maynard is capable of becoming a regular senior player,  which the other three were not.

I think Tyson is a very strong player around the ball is very underrated in this regard.

The knock on him is his disposal but he is a very important player at getting the ball moving from congestion.

I've seen him break even with Mummy (at his peak not in his decline) a few times trying to wrestle the ball off each other and that says to me he is very physically strong.

I think it's very difficult to tell a persons strength by looking at them and Jnrmac's statement was absolute.  I just wondered if he had hard evidence or if it was based on using his eyes which to me means it's just a guess.
