Hawks delist 7

With the deadline for list submission closing in I note that the Hawks wielded the axe today. After just 1 season Jack Fitzpatrick is without a home and Matt Spangher and Alex woodward have both been cut after missing through injury in the last 2 years. Sorry for Fitzy as I thought he had overcome his concussion issues and may fill the gap left by the injury to Ceglar. Others thoughts?

Was relatively athletic but didn't have the footy atributes to make any real impact.

Hawks become another club to realise we delisted these guys for a reason

Good on him ( and all the delistees ) for giving it a crack.

Unfortunately there are only 792 spots on AFL lists. Fitzy, like many others before him and many to come after him, is a good footballer - just not good enough.

All the best for the future.

Just shows that despite all the talk of the great Clarkson and Hawthorn culture you win some and you lose some.

There were a few on here concerned about Fitz going to Hawthorn and how he would materialise into something he was not.

In the end he has been better than most, he's played at the highest level but hasn't been able to sustain his career any longer despite being sprinkled with the Hawk magic dust.

Enter Ty Vickery, will the magic dust transform him...doubtful.

Has played more finals than most of the melbourne team, ole Fitz!

wouldnt be surprised if someone picks him up

I think Fitzy's one winning game career at Hawthorn still gives him a better win:loss record than his time with us.

I commend him for his persistence through adversity. I hope he goes on to be successful in whatever else he does from here, whether it's as a professional footballer or something else.

I would Rookie Fitzy for insurance. Only needs to be for year. Worst case he plays CHB for Casey.

How many years did they give Vickery?

Fitz was an ordinary footballer who was lucky to get on to two lists, Melbourne gave him ample opportunity to show something and he didn't, we delisted him and Hawthorn took him as insurance, it didn't work out so that's the way it goes.

Fitzy (and some of the others) getting delisted when the Hawks have nothing but late picks tells me they know they can't win the flag next year and would rather have speculative young talent than mature depth players.

The football romantic in me thinks Fitzy is an interesting option to consider for our back up ruck/forward role but my head says we are better off trying to find a long term option.

Litherland is also a guy with enough talent to be on an AFL list somewhere.

Hawks have to rebalance their list. They need to get in as much young talent as possible. No point holding onto depth type players now that their premiership window is closing/closed.

There were a few players on the Hawks list that were sheltered somewhat, by the excellent top end talent they had, no club has 22 absolute stars and when the top end leaves or gets a bit long in the tooth, they are exposed. Litherland, Fitz, Hartung, Sicily etc.

I was just confused.  To me it was Paul Johnson all over again - I didn't think there was a chance in heck he would get a game.

He got 3 and did okay, and got the opportunity to play in 2 AFL finals, albeit losing ones, and had 7 years in the AFL system.  I reckon I'd be looking back and counting myself very lucky to have gotten that far.  Most don't.  Good on him and good luck.

In his first couple of games, every time I heard his name on the radio, I thought they were saying "liquorland" and they were giving him a stupid nickname ( possibly based on past indiscretions )

I prefer Edward Woodward. (It may not have stood the test of time, but 'Callan' may well be the best spy drama ever made).

Agreed, maybe we should take this over to the bananas thread?
