It bemuses me that low numbers seem so important. Why? Ron Barassi wore 31, not 3 or 1. And many other very fine players  have worn numbers in the 30s and 40s.

What's so special about wearing a low number? It's not as if the game was like rugby where every player number signifies a position on the ground. (I wore 14)!!!

Yeah, I do recall the him wanting to make his own name/jumper No. thing.

I was kinda playing along with the jumper number = how many flags they will win with the MFC thing.  Obviously in that context 12 is better than 7, but at this point the game gets a little silly.  To be honest, I'd be happy for us just to win one flag in my lifetime ...and then reassess from there.

Haven't ever taken much notice of Hibbard until now, but from all I hear on this forum, is that he is a hard as nails backman.

He thus has my blessing for number 14.

Completely agree. A very fine team could be made of high numbered players. However, for reasons which escape me, modern AFL players seem to believe a low number somehow equates to status. To that, I'll just mention Cyril Rioli, Shaun Rehn, Robert Walls, Alex Jesaulenko, Swan McKay, Kevin Bartlett, etc.

Jeez I wish we'd move on from this need for players to wear Barrasi's number.  Let players make their own history rather than constantly trying to relive something that happened 50 years ago.  It's embarrassing. 

Give 31 to a random new player and stop trying to morph all our senior players in to a great of the past.

Dont really mind what numbers they wear just happy they are Melbourne jumpers  bit of topic anyone know if we are changing our clash jumper this year , i hope so been 2 years wearing the current one .... want one that has bugger all white in it just reverse the colors or the old royal blue one BUT we are red and blue not bloody white

If you've been around football clubs you would realise that players do have an interest in the jumper numbers they wear (not all though). 

I think Christian Salem might consider that a new jumper might bring him some luck given the injuries/illness he's had over the past two years. Why not switch him to 6 and given Jordan Lewis 3?

Important to some like me - what's the final set?  I've heard 19 Hannan, 37 Johnstone and 45 Keilty.  What about Filipovic and Smith?  Are 31 and 38 allocated?  Training watchers?

Potentially waiting for Lumumba's impending exit? Might be a bit of a shuffle as somebody could move up to the number 8 guernsey.
