Money wise yes I see it.  But Sydney and GC will want quality players or 1st round picks.  33 doesn't make a huge difference.

No, but it gives them another pick as currency. So they can trade picks 14 and 33 and still have 35.

Id hazard a guess darling might be in the mix with a mitchell trade. With roughy out they have some issues up forward. I don't rate sicily and they need more than rioli and puopolo

0 chance of that IMO. Darling is 24.

Sure Mitchell has a connection with Simpson but he has a young family... moving across the country would be hard.  Does any other Victorian based club see an opportunity here!!

It smells like the Hawks have salary cap PRESSURE and need Sam Mitchell to move if they are to bring in Tom Mitchell and O'Meara (bringing in $800k-$1mill in incoming salary)

I'm guessing you didn't hear the interview with him then? He sounded really happy about going to WC.

Will you be starting a thread about how we should be chasing Mitchell hard?

With regards to our involvement in the trade period to date, Essendon are obviously being pains in the arses as per usual.  I reckon our first pick this year has been earmarked to somehow get us a better pick, hence why we don't want to give it up to Essendon.  Because we haven't been able to do the Hibberd deal yet is probably holding us up on other deals.

I can't imagine Hawks (nor Adam Simpson) dragging Mitchell thru some shoddy horse-trading.

People need to understand Hawks do not operate like 'greedy' clubs like Coll, Ess or poorly managed clubs.  Hawks are very very professional.

Hawks need:

  • the list spot (none of their players will go to GCS)
  • the salary cap space and
  • a nothing pick to take their 3 minimum draftees as they will use all their other picks to get Mitchell (who want picks, not players)

He is so highly respected they would let him walk for a nothing pick to get him where he wants to go.

I suggest you listen to his interview on SEN this morning. You couldn't hear a more honest unambiguous football interview in your life.

Hawthorn also had salary cap pressure when Buddy was becoming a free agent, and they faced the reality that he would go. They didn't dwell on it, and won the next 2 flags.

Salary cap space with (Sam) Mitchell wouldn't be as much an issue as 50% of his salary contributes to the cap.  Bit like Bartel and Enright at Geelong - they were costing the club bugger all, hence why they still can't afford Deledio and Tuohy.

No I didn't, but have since read his comments. He seems ok with going, but I stand by my post.

He didn't initiate this and no matter how you dress it up one of the greatest Hawks of all time, who is contracted for one more year, is being asked to leave and play at another club.

There is absolutely no doubt that he could have got an assistant coaching role at numerous clubs after he finishes playing.

Maybe we are looking at some trades that will give us an additional second round pick but not as high as the one we already have?

The Mitchell to WCE sounds like it has been discussed and orchestrared behind the scenes, over a long period of time, and completed without media leaks or hype. I hate the Hawks for their success but this hs been handled brilliantly.

However, knowing I am old fashioned now, the idea of moving on a decorated player, 5 time club champion and ex-captain just feels wrong. Even though I know Grimes' time at MFC is over, it felt similar, and he is not in the same ballpark as Mitchell in terms of ability and success.  Why can't Mitchell stay at his club, take a pay cut similar to what he would get at WCE, and begin his assistant coaching career at Hawthorn? He can experience another club later.

People ARE culture - and Mitchell moving on like this means business triumphs over culture.

Wrong again on 2 counts. It was initially discussed 12 months ago and Mitchell thinks it's best in his interests to make the move now. It's his decision to make as to whether he stays or goes.

He could have got a job elsewhere after he retired, but he clearly wants to work under Simpson, and the timing is right for all parties.

Hawk's just know how to get things done the right way and looking after a legend of their club. Good on them and Weagles for sorting something out.

P.S - it might be a bit easier to do this kind of stuff when you've won 4 flags in 8 years. Not many people will scold you through it, except the odd whinging hawk supporter.

No way those two are  getting $800k-$1m.  It would be much more. GC offered o'meara over $800k for 4 years. Mitchell is leaving for more money.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w
