I understand Pearce getting one of our spots, but a 31 year old as the other marquee signing??? Melbourne have missed the boat here while the other clubs have locked in the rest of the super talented and younger marquee players on their lists for the next 10 years, we'll be lucky to get more than about 3 or 4 out of Hickey. Would have gone for Sabrina Frederick-Traub the 20 year old key position player, personally.

Hell No.  She's big, but she's not that great a player.  Admittedly at 20 there's plenty of time to work on her but on what she showed in the exhibition games she's slow, not a great mark and an average kick from close to goal.  Her biggest asset is her size.

While Hickey is a quality player, I am not at all happy about the Bulldogs getting Blackburn.  She's going to be a star for years to come and is probably the next in line behind Daisy as best mid in the game.  Plus she's played for us since the first draft.  Realistically, looking at the way we've gone I think they are hoping to be the first premiers, maybe get two or three flags in the first five years.  We've gone for older players with proven records and given up the option on some seriously good younger talent.  The draft should be interesting.

I'm also very surprised that Fremantle didn't swoop on the best from the West.  Chelsea Randall is playing for the Crows and as noted above, Frederick-Taub is going to Brisbane.  They have two quality mids to build around, but you'd think they could have done better.

Back to the topic - I personally am pretty comfortable with us recruiting more established players ready to go from the start.

Fact is, most of the players available will not have had the benefit of much high-level development investment and the potential for really rapid improvement is strong.

Get leaders, commit to development, get results very quickly.

I think it might be an astute recognition of the different talent scenario in Women's AFL.

I'm wondering where our girls will play their home games. Given the season is Feb / March then a fair few grounds would be finishing off cricket obligations.

Given Richmond have no women's team and their district cricket side buggered off years ago, should we have a crack at negotiating the use of Punt Road ?

Daisy Pearce just won the inaugural woman's VFL B&F. This goes alongside her VWFL B&Fs from 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015.

So in the last 8 years she's been the best player in Victoria (and probably Australia as we have the stronger league) 7 times.

Absolute champion

Has anyone yet come to grips with how the playing list will be put together? How are we getting rookies before there is even a main list? (I'm thinking they're the women being attracted from other sports?)

...and on another rookie(!) - as reported by Hun - Cat Phillips:

Not sure what the transferable skills are, but I'm guessing there's a fair bit of athleticism!

I think these are just the Category B rookies, ones who haven't been playing footy but have the rough potential to play. Like how we have Shaun Smith's son the basketballer or how some teams get rookies from overseas.

I have a bit to do with my local womens club and had a player nominate for the draft (and a couple get approached to nominate) and I think it's not far off, in the coming weeks

Thanks, Red.

If the pay ratio of rookies-to-listeds is the same as in the mens comp they'll be doing it for the love of it, eh?

I know a mature-age ex-WNBL woman nominating, and I understand now where she's likely to fit. An avid Dees family, so I've got fingers crossed!

I see Phillips is up on the club's website now, with this reference: "The 24-year-old mechanical engineer joined Melbourne University’s VFL women’s side in 2016 and played seven games this season, including the recent VFL Women’s Grand Final." So some Aussie Rules registration is OK for rookie qualification, it seems? The Foxsports article I tagged above (dated "8 months ago") noted "Neither Michelle nor Cat have any kind of football foundation" but also reported that they participated in "first leg of the AFL’s nationwide talent search, blitzing the field to earn two spots in the women’s academy" (which dates-wise aligns with the small/recent number of VFL games). So perhaps the cut-off was the talent search or thereabouts?

I think I'll ask the club.

Our women's Ruckwoman, Maddy Boyd, features on the MFC and AFL websites as 168cm and is described as "tall"! Surely there is a misprint or shabby editing?

Id say it was probably 186cm and they accidentally reversed it. The rucks in my girlfriend's div 3 team are taller than me and I'm 178cm

Each Demon women's player will receive a commemorative ring, engraved with their draft year, mfc logo and the sequence number at which they joined the club (ala the Australian cricket team player number).  http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2016-11-18/womens-players-receive-rings

A very proud item for a player to have and each one will be unique.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
