I had it put to me by a non Melbourne supporting mate today that we should have played in the royal blue today as a promotion of MND Big Freeze.

Personally,  I said I thought it was a dilution of our brand and that the royal blue represents an awful era historically for us

Interested to see what others think. It would be a good one off jumper and would look ggreat to have the stadium in royal blue . Not sure that the QB game is the forum for it as it's our biggest TV exposure game.

THOUGHTS??

It's not the worst shout but it feels like every 2nd week there's a new jumper we're wearing. When you play a traditional rival you just wear your #1 strip.

That was my point to him. Big day..big exposure .. traditional strip.

If we weren't forced to wear our clash jumper so much, often unnecessarily, then I'd be all for it.

But as it is we don't see the classic red and blue enough. It's easily the best guernsey in the comp, and we're always being forced into something else :(

Royal blue was hideous. Born in the mistaken belief that it would look better on the then new colour TV. But it looked worse. I celebrated when they went back to their traditional colours. I prefer to remember Robbie Flower for the player he was and he finished his illustrious career wearing the red and navy blue. The royal blue has been replaced by our "away" jumpers, also a ridiculous decision irrespective of merchandising reasons.

Not a bad idea but it's a no from me.

How would people feel if we wore the royal blue jumper as our away jumper? Assuming it fits the AFL's rules - which it probably doesn't.

If we are going retro then may as well go the full hog! Front of guernsey! Otherwise it's a no from me!   ....

To be fair this year I think that we have only had to wear the clash jumper once this year, against essendon (shudder). We have had the indigenous and BCNA jumpers, but they were at our home games. Should be #1 strip against sydney this weekend as well.

While I don't approve of losing, I'm also not a big fan of wiping the royal blue jumper from our collective consciousnesses.

When John Kennedy laid the foundations of modern Hawthorn,  he was big on the past remaining in the minds of the all associated with the club. Prior to 1961, Hawthorn's past wasn't something to look back on fondly. However, it remains no less a part of their identity as their unrivaled 50 years of success has.

We at Melbourne tend to retcon our history. We kid ourselves that we are still some modern colossus of the game when put bluntly,  we have been a horribly mediocre, verging on dysfunctional at times,  club. We need to take ownership of that and use it to drive us to greater success.

For that reason, while the decision to wear it for a game won't turn the earth off it's axis, I'm not against taking the royal blue out of storage for one game a year to promote the big freeze.

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

Demonlander The Analyser was the sole Trackwatcher out at Casey Fields today to bring you the following observations from this mornings preseason training session. Training  was at Casey today. It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. Activities included kicking for goal,  aerial , contest work etc. I noticed the following players not in match simulation Jack Viney  running laps and looks fine for round one . I think Kolt looks like he’s im

    TRAINING: Wednesday 12th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
