One area of the club I think the footy department seems to have full confidence in is...

The Footy Dept.

I don't say that flippantly (although, admittedly, I probably typed it that way). That's a brave call about Jeffy and it's obviously based on the fact they feel they have clearly defined the things he needs to do to be in the senior team and he hasn't done them. So he gets a spell. Very confident decision. Regardless of how I feel about it personally it does set a standard.

Saty. This is the entire selection of quotes since team announcement stating a dissenting opinion on the omission of Garlett. I'm not sure why you consider a contrary opinion to that of the selection committee as constituting idiocy or constant negativity? But I'd definitely have you on board if I were seeking an apparatchik.

Don't like Garlett out. Yes his last 2 weeks have been bad. But just a few weeks ago I saw him get out the back on attack so many times. Did anyone see Collingwood's defence last week?

Garlett out over Kent and Harmes is just bloody stupid.

What's the argument? He had a down couple of weeks? How many have Kent and Harmes had?

We better win this. The selections this season continue to annoy me.

If I were seeking a way for Garlett to recapture his form and confidence, I'd send him to the forward pocket on Queen's Birthday at the MCG against Collingwood and tell him to kick goals.

Difference for me is Jeff takes the best small defender.  At his best. He is the best of the three. Harmes had been the poorest.  His goals vs the lions where in the last when the game was won. Jeff world's the hardest or the back which can stretch the defense.  Jeff can also go in the middle and get clearances.

I was a little bit worried about this game but look at their forward line, it is absolute garbage... If they kick a bigger score than us with that forward line, I'll give the game away..

Garlett has been our third highest goal scorer though. Not sure about his ommission.

He wasn't our third highest goal scorer last week, and we pushed the reigning premiers.

I know and he was bad the week before. My reservations were he has some credits in the bank but mainly because Qb is one of our bigger games and Garlett stries me as the ind of person who thrives in the limelight. I hope Kent steps up as he needs to as well.

I'll say it in no uncertain terms, a shithouse decision!

We drop a bona fide goalseak who might well be down on form but suggest another with his potency??

Not happy with this at all!

Kennedy for Harmes next week?

I would have thought Garlett firstly. Hasn't performed since Rnd 7 against the Suns. Bottom 4 performer in all rounds since and WOG for us y'day. Averaging just over 1 goal per game since the Suns match and would have thought he would need 2 - 3 on average (at least) to justify his position, especially seeing he is doing little else to contribute. I realise they are diff roles but pretty sure Ben Kenn could handle small forward role in place of Garlett. Need to send a big message here and actually put someone in who who might be willing to work harder to keep the ball i50. Have to try something to improve our forward pressure.

Harmes would be next off the block but his recent form (without being acceptable) hasn't been anywhere as bad as Garlett's (until yesterday where he was only 2nd to Garlett for WOG). Yes i know he isn't a stay at home small forward but he does spend a fair bit of time i50 or close to it. Could instruct him to play deeper regardless.

Garlett / Harmes from Rnd 8 to 11, 2016

Eff Disp 11 / 39

Goals 5 / 4

Tackles 11 / 14

1%s 3 / 3

Clangers 9 / 12

Intriguing selections. Why name Frost in FP after club website pumping up his spot down back? Naming Viney, dropping Garlett, talls and smalls to chop and change. The 3 omissions and resulting position reshuffles will be interesting.

Playing mind games with the already fragile magpie brain!

I'd assume with Garlett's omission to has to do with adherence (or not) to non-negotiable team rules around structure or contested ball, and form.

Well, it's always tricky. If we play him and he has another dud game, everyone will say he should have been dropped ... and vice versa. I think with a lot of these selection decisions, there's a lot going on behind the scenes around what players have been asked or instructed to do, what roles they fill etc. If Garlett was told a week ago that he needed to work on x/y/z after the preceding weeks' poor effort, and he then didn't do it, well ...  Same goes in reverse for players who perhaps Demonlanders are not seeing the benefit of: if they're doing what they've been told, and playing to instructions, and doing so effectively, equally, well ...

Re Garlett.  Ballsy decision but the right decision imo.  If you want a decent culture around the place, which is respected by everyone from top to bottom, then the same standards must apply to everyone, no exceptions!  While I don't claim to know what underpinned the decision, I'll back our Footy Dept. 100% on this one.

Bit like you Stuie   get a bit bored with some of the idiots on here   and can't be bothered getting into crap with them    I loathe the constant negativity  so if I see any will try and engage in debate  but most of the time is pointless   I don't know why some support seems to bring them so much misery  as for Jeff Garlett has been down on form and confidence in last couple of games  so wasn't surprised when he was omitted, bit like BenKen  who went back to Casey and responded the correct way  hopefully Jeff will do the same    these days MFC can replace any player  this shows the rest of the squad nobody is immune

Like Stuie, I do find your preseason reports very helpful, but you still have not given your opinion on the matter, you have said you weren't surprised.

Do you think Garlett deserves to play?

While he does get a lot of goals over the back, I would imagine we break down going forward just as often because he doesn't/cant lead at the ball carrier and we lack players capable of breaking the lines.

And the last line is that same line we hear every pre season and not even close to true. We have a list now with a bunch of list cloggers and it appears certain players have already had their papers stamped. I would struggle to find a player in the VFL team that I would want in the AFL team.

We've had a fairly good run with injuries and an easy draw, yet we are not in the 8. I expect more and like many others use this forum to voice my concern.

Negative or realist.

Yep, that's my take. In particular  i reckon he has not met the competiveness threshold in the last 3 weeks, most notably last week.

Roos rule number 1. All players will be competitive

I've actually changed my mind. Garlett deserved to be dropped over Harmes. Can't get 14 disposals in 2 weeks and stay in the team

The Garlett decision is obviously a tough one. Should they have risked playing him and have him misfire again, or should they send him to Casey to regain his form and confidence so that he's firing when needed next week against a much tougher opponent in the Swans? I'm happy to think the club made the right decision.

Don't understand the hysteria over Garlett at all. Kennedy was the form player for the first 5 weeks, lost some touch and went back to the twos. Smashed it in terrible conditions and earnt a recall.

Jeff is one of my favourite players but his form has been rubbish. Since when do good teams just allow that to continue when our reserves are in scintillating form? As great as he can be he isn't Rioli or even Betts for that matter that can win games of their own boot. He contributes well when in form but I can't recall him owning a game and creating a win, certainly in a long time.

But posters like picket need to be blood boiling enraged over something each week so this will have to do I guess.

The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
