Umpires destroying games

This old argument, sorry AK but it doesn't work like that. So basicislly anyone who has never been an umpire doesn't have the right to complain or have an opinion about their poor decisions?

Im not saying that ET, we are quick to judge but slow to understand.

Do not get me wrong i yell and scream about their terrible decisions along with the rest of you, but it really is a no love less job, tell me the last time we had a thread when the umps got it right, or a thread about hardly noticing them?  I know the game against the Tiges the umps were great and i hardly remember seeing them.

My view on the umps changed when i saw a dozen people dressed up like them in Round 1, cheering for them whenever they made a decision and it really made me think about the absolute crap they go through.  They are part of the game, always have been always will be and while they are not accountable for their actions the standard of umpiring will not change.  Much like our own teams in the recent past.  Only thing is football players are a dime a dozen, umps are not.

We must be in a minority. I thought the free kick was there too. Clear block with the primary intention of stopping your opposing ruckman getting to the ball.

Agreed.

In the Norf  v St Kilda game the StK player stands in one spot and fends off Goldstein with one hand. Free to Goldstein. I would be livid as a saints supporter at that. Its rubbish. Arguably, Goldstein ran into the saints player and the Saints should have the free.

There's no way you can argue Goldstein runs into Hickey. Hickey's not even in the frame as the umpire gets ready to throw it up. In a desperate attempt to make the contest he charges in from the right of screen, runs at Goldstein, looks at Goldstein, makes body contact with Goldstein to prevent him having his way with the hit out, and then contests the hit out.

That's a pretty clear free kick IMO, but no way it could have been a free to Hickey.

The deliberate out of bounds rule is a much worse rule right now than the ruck infringement one. It's quickly moving towards a "last touch" rule and that is not how this sport ought to be played or ruled.

it's true that they umpire finals differently by letting the game go and putting away the whistle.

it would be great to see them do it all season.

4 umpires would just ruin the game like we'd never seen before.

there'd just be more free kicks paid and a slower game would result.

The only way that umpiring can improve (be more consistent) is if they only pay the really obvious ones that impact on the play and not every little slight touch or bump.

And only pay holding the ball if the tackle is correct*: penalize the tackler who jumps on the back of the guy who had the guts to get the ball in the first place and has been ridden into the ground.

*such as the Ride of the Valkyries on Gablett on Saturday.

The only video I have seen doesn't show that. It shows Hickey pretty much stationary with his arm out fending off Goldstein.

It doesn't change my post above though. If you are going to pay contact in a ruck contest you will have 70 ruck frees a game. As usual its about consistent interpretation. Maybe they have to go back to two guys running and jumping with no standing next to each other.

Spot on. I have a bet going with a couple of mates that we finish 11th or better. I win and they pay for my meal at a really good restaurant. They win and i pay for both of them at pretty good restaurant.

The way things are shaping up the Saints are one of the threats to me so their two close losses are great!

Shocking bet. You pay for two and they pay half of your bill.

Interesting to hear Slobo say he tried to get the break down of frees pannell have in other bulldogs games and the afl wouldn't let champion data give him that information.

Very interesting. Wow, What;s to hide?

I wonder if they have checked whether he has betting accounts?

Lazy journalism. Just took me 12 minutes to work out that he umpired the Doggies against Brisbane and NM. Called 9 out of the Doggies 24 frees against Brisbane and 6 out of their frees against NM.

Calls a lot of stuff from a distance, especially at centre bounces. Gets sucked into the high tackles but most of them do. Especially when the Doggies drop in the tackle and lift their off arm so the tackler contacts above the shoulder.

Hope for their sake they don't do that to Gawny. He just continues the tackle a bit harder then seems to give them a serve while he lays on top of them when they duck into him.

Poor umpiring decisions cost us the game against North.

Absolutely they did, The Goldstein free together with a blatant throw missed by the official which led directly to a North goal, both in the last quarter.

So much for being an honest and transparent organisation.

Where do you get the free kick break down?

On 360 last night they said the ump gave 17 frees to the Dogs and only one to Adelaide.

I reckon the integrity department will investigate that.  It might be coincidence but it smells off.

Statistically its .5 to the power of 17.

This indicates he is a cheat.

Pure and simple.

AFL website game replays. They make tags for each free kick. Doesn't take long to go through them if you really want to know.

OK thanks

Hey jnrmac. I just read my own reply and i realised it could be taken rudely. I meant if Robbo really wanted to know that badly it wasn't hard to work out for himself.

No sweat I didn't take it that way :roos:

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
