Cora Lynn? Bringing back some memories now, played many games at Cora Lynn over the years. Finals always held at that ground, great country footy venue.

Always hard to say. I never thought Papley would impact at AFL level. I watched him at Power a few times. Wasn't overly impressed (despite his good last year there). I don't know much about this Jaxon Briggs beyond a few articles and wraps from other posters. Casey have had some reasonable country Vic kids over the years, not many have made that next step.

I've said it many times before, but my biggest knock on Newton is his lack of strength in a contest, which has been really awful. Other than that I don't mind him. 

Can anyone that was there today comment on how he was over the ball? 

 

Haven't seen him in a team with the types of inside beasts we have now though, so there could be an outside roll for him.

Sorry mono, I don't know the Dogs match ups. And entry into the Dees is dependent on current players underperforming there. I'm still part way through the replay from yesterday but it's not the same as watching it at the ground.

My take is that there are 2 or 3 from today  who would be in team contention if there was a role for them, but they would all struggle to make an impact at the higher level. They are ANB - for several excellent weeks work in the centre, Newton - for an outstanding centre display today, and Weideman - for a good solid forward target as a 3rd or 4th tallish option (after Hogan, Watts, Pedo). I personally would hold back on Weideman for many weeks yet, just to let him develop more. 

But each of these ins requires someone to be dropped. And I can't see that happening unless forced through injury. Our midfield is not struggling for form and our forward line doesn't look to me like it needs another tall just yet. 

These guys are all deserving, but that doesn't mean they are able to waltz in to the seniors. And that's a great thing for our club at this moment.

I was blown away by Newton today.

I have never been on his bandwagon, and reckon we currently have too many choices in the smallish in-and-under brigade.  And he will not depose Viney or Jones or Tyson or Clarrie.

But he was in EVERYTHING. At the bottom of the pack.  With strength to get up and get the ball out. Cleanly. Sometimes with opponents hanging off him. Saw it with my own eyes. Honestly I didn't think a body of his size and shape could do what I saw today at VFL level. That said, it would be nothing fantastic at AFL and he would be one of many with great skills.

I get where you're coming from, but no longer doubt him in a contest - again, the qualifier is 'at VFL level'.

And back to the Casey guys: Are King and Weideman in any sense competing with each other for a spot? Max has the pinch-hit-ruck capability on his side (and, as a forward, is also a Darcy Daniher clone, as I've surmised on other threads).

What's hard for players like Newton (and ANB and Michie) is that they star on the ball at a lower level and when they get promoted are played HFF & can't get into it, especially if it's one of those games where it's just not coming down much).

Relieved to hear Sam Frost is finally being used in the back line. Have a feeling he will excel there and  come back into the MFC in a few weeks as our newly anointed gorilla tamer.  With his athleticism he could also play on mid sized forwards too.

THE VISIT by Ice Station

When a team visits Casey Fields, it has to be prepared for an inhospitable reception from the elements. Sometimes it's a howling, swirly breeze. Sometimes it's the rain that makes conditions tough and slippery. Add that to a team that happens to be at the top of its form and the visiting team knows it's in for a long, hard day.

The Northern Blues should have seen it coming during the curtain raiser when their development league team was held to just three goals by an enthusiastic bunch of Casey Scorpions youngsters but they would hardly have expected to be held to an even lower score.

And the game was virtually over in virtually minutes with the home side dominating the stoppages in the greasy conditions. Ben Newton, the man who was to be the hero of the day, whipped the ball out of the middle, passed it to Max King who converted in the opening minute. Further goals followed at regular intervals with the hapless Blues putting up little resistance as other heroes of the day emerged. Jack Grimes showed great grit and leadership. 

Jaxon Briggs, the Casey 23rd man, a mere slip of a lad at 176cm is a local kid who has pace and a strong engine. He announced himself with two goals in the opening term on his way to a total for the day that doubled that of the opposition. Sam Weideman, another young gun with a familiar name to football goers, juggled a mark and kicked truly on his way to a four goal tally. 

The lead at quarter time was 32 points and the carnage continued to the long break with the visitors still goalless with Newton continuing to dominate and Weideman booting another couple.

Things didn't change much in the third quarter although Casey's scoring rate slowed down and the Blues ended their run of 12 consecutive goals in the shadows of three quarter time. It was a magnificent defensive performance by the Scorpions who were well led by the miserly Jack Hutchins and Lynden Dunn.

Casey did not rest on their laurels in the end - they piled on another seven goals with Newton and Alex Neal-Bullen dominating the clearances. Briggs and Weideman added to their goal tallies and Chris Dawes in his return match after a long injury lay off got into the act and kicked a couple. The visitors' mystery ended with the siren sounding and the scoreboard showing an inhospitable result for the Northern Blues - a 107 point defeat.

Spot on. If Newton, Michie and ANB were given extended senior games like Kent, Bugg and Harmes, I don't think we'd lose much. Each have their strengths and weaknesses.

Sam Weideman's 13 goals to date (in just four games) equals the output of the club's top two goal kickers for 2015 - Jayden Hunt and Max King.

(to be fair both Hunt and King did not play full seasons last year)
