Again, we played 10 kids with less than 50 games experience, and SO DID THEY. Bringing up "maturity" is a cop out.

I think it depends on how the game was won and lost. We were smashed in the guts by bigger bodies. The big strength of the Saints in their current squad under their current coach. We're building towards that crunching side, but it's still only really Jones and Viney doing it. With a bit of Vince thrown in occasionally (Also Oliver when he's selected). As far as I'm concerned they're our only reliables. There's good players, but they're still to come... In 50 games, Trengove, the aforementioned Oliver, track, ANB etc etc... If they're in there and spelling Viney we don't lose a handle on the ball and it doesn't get out the back with membrey (who?) kicking 5. This, IMO, is where we lose out... the midfield. They have maturity there. Their youth is located elsewhere on the squad. Deep forward with guys like Bruce and Billings. What I think is inaccurate... or perhaps statistics telling a false story... is how the ages match up in the area the match was won. There's no way their talls are better than ours going forward. None. Hogan, Watts, Gawn, Pedo (liked some of his game)... They have old stalwarts in Fisher and Dempster, and a talented kid in Bruce. I think if we have 50 more games into these young MIDFIELDERS then the whole thing swings back the other direction. We open up a 20-30 point lead on them and they have to take those quicks they sent over the back into defense, and we start playing the game on our terms.... ie.... Hogan kicks 14. lol

I think probably the real pain we're going to have to endure is seeing a lack of pace and sometimes a lack of skill in our 22. That's also where we might become frustrated. In the future that is.

I very much agree with your last line, but I don't agree at all that they're a better team in the guts.

We average more clearances, contested possessions, hitouts and inside 50s than them, and I'd rate our middle 6 as superior to theirs without a second thought. They showed us up on the weekend with their speed and run, which is evidenced by them being far superior to us in marks, uncontested possessions, tackles and rebound 50s this year.

They absolutely smashed us in marks, tackles and uncontested possessions on Saturday, smashed us. Those things indicate run.

Now, as for talking about the talls, I notice you left out on name in particular for St Kilda who probably tips the balance in their favour at this stage.

And how long have we been averaging that for? Six games now? We're still a work in progress. The Viney/Oliver situation... really an amazing one. But jeez, one of them has played only a few games, and the other is still 21. Those two have been our prime movers in the guts! With Jones doing as he always does. I really think this midfield will have the same or similar names in it and be pretty amazing in 3 years time. Whereas St Kildas.... they're getting great production week in week out from Montagna, Steven, Armitage. But they're ayt their ceiling now. That's cause for optimism. This last weekend.... will happen less and less.

Yeah I agree for the most part, I'm not panicking at all over that game, disappointed by the lack of effort and frustrated by the coaching but the overall direction is right so it's just one of those bumps along the way.

Still disagree about the midfields though.... ;)

Who is? A bunch of us are still talking about it sure, but we're talking about factors in the loss and what can happen moving forward, not pulling our hair out.

You've only just realised that Nash, I don't say they suck, I say there is small vocal majority on here who bombard each thread with their pessimism and negativity after a loss and tend to deride anybody who does not share theit rather shallow view of everything. I get rather bored with it, I skim past most of their posts, but unfortunately occasionally the Liverpudlian in me comes to the fore and I find the temptation to bait them to hard to resist, some don't even attend the games live and you will find them parroting the latest theory espoused by one of the so called media experts    my attitude I go along hoping the team will put in a competitive effort each week, if it doesn't it will lose      my take on the weekend just gone we still can't maintain the rage over an extended period of time       watch the media this week if St Kilda, who are in a similar stage of development to us come out and get belted because of the same reason

Lol. A small vocal majority? Well, what is it? A small number of us or is it a majority? And the above post is drowning in irony.

People vent. That's footy. Most on Demonland are capable of seeing the grey, rather than only the black and white. Unfortunately though, Saty, you're not one of them. You're stridently pro-Melbourne everything, to the point that no one within/attached to the club can be questioned, and this view is one I would equally describe as 'shallow'.

I support my team if that is what you mean by stridently pro Melbourne   disappointed as the next man by the performance on Saturday, but don't feel the need to fill every thread and topic post game with doom and gloom

I also, if I feel the need arises, express my disappointment to the club and players directly, not hide behind a keyboard taking potshots, also one of the few on here who doesn't  baulk at being identified publicly

You are obviously another poster who doesn't understand I will deliberately bait some of the posters on here because a. they deserve it and b. I find it entertaining now and again

Forgot the small vocal majority was a play on words    I will try not to br too cerebral in the future

I go every week, mate. I go to all the Melbourne-based matches. I'm going to Sydney next month and I always go to Geelong. I don't like others mocking my football club, but there's a line where as a supporter you can demand more. My experience of your posts, either directed at me or others, is that any questioning of the club is an affront to you. Pointing out weaknesses and things we could improve on doesn't necessarily translate to doom and gloom.

As for expressing your disappointment to the club and players directly, that's why I go to the games. I let them know too. Over the fence. I also couldn't care if I was identified publicly, but you wear that pride with such disdain for others that it gets tiresome.

And I think you 'baiting' posters is you hiding behind your keyboard. It's either trolling or you don't understand there are shades of grey.

Saty I take it you are ok with baiting that includes calling a female poster fat ("Are you one meter wide?"), lazy, disorganised and slow? The 'Get To Etihad' thread includes all of these gems.

Baiting = trolling.

Lots, that is orrelevant though as the argument I was replying to was that Hawthorn don't have off days. Clearly they do as do all teams, even when winning premierships. The big difference is how far from their bast their off days are.

And he gets away with it because of his training reports, which for the most part are largely worthless.  The above, as you mentioned, just goes to show his true colors and his 'worth' to this forum as a whole.

The beauty of Demonland, and other fan forums is that its a place to let off steam after a disappointing loss.

Saty seems to not understand that., and I am not even sure why he visits here to be honest. Literally all his posts are just him whining about non footy related matters ie.  posters on this forum.

I come to post my opinions, like others but because I don't agree with some of the more vociferous I get denigrated, if you don't like what I post don't read I, unlike some, don't really care

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form
