Max killed Goldstein on Sunday. All of his KPI apart from Goldstein's goals - some of them from very dodgy umpiring -  left the lanky Roo for dead.

This man is a solid rock, Tu Est Petrus, from which to build a Demon dynasty.

He'll no doubt get mortally wounded next week...

This sort of comment deserves a perma-ban.

He is almost no. 1 as fan favourite I reckon. Everybody is on Jesse but it's sort of expected, the respect for Jonesy is huge, and everyone is excited about Oliver.

But big Max! There's something about him that everyone wants to get around. He's got the beard, he's a bit crazy, he's hard at the ball, and he's had his run of bad luck with injuries over the years (hopefully done and dusted). If I could get my number on my Dee's top changed it would definitely become 11. Jimmy would be proud.

I dont know about everyone else but what i love about Max is has always shown the talent is there and now he is starting to fulfill what we thought he could be. I dont think he will be number one ruck this year but i hope he keeps rising because he deserves it.

You can see his Ruck patterns evolving as he goes along. It's all about unpredictability in those middle bounces( from my limited knowledge).

But he is now mixing it up quite well, with jumping early, jumping late and sometimes not jumping at all. Also, along with the second efforts, there is now a lot of intent with responsibility.

Agree entirely, this is what I see. He's developing into a tactical ruckmen with a lot of scope. The synergy he is developing with the midfielders is tracking fast. His improved strength is a big asset when jumping either late or not at all to combat other leaping ruckmen. He has definitely been worth waiting for in development when many here wanted to trade in ready made ruckmen at a cost. The shining light in his draft year for us.

The application is now there in spades and he seems like he's got a good head on his shoulders. He is a massive cult figure and his form since working back into the seniors last year has been phenomenal. Lets hope he can keep it up, if he does he will be the premier ruckman in the comp in a couple of years.

Is Monkhorst playing ???  He always tried to kill Jimmy outright.

Bit of love for Greg Stafford then? He rarely gets a mention around these parts, but I think Spencer also improved last year under Stafford's direction.

I have a lot of time for Goldie; he's much better than either Sandi or Nic Nat. But Max absolutely smashed Goldstein in one-on-one contests between them.

Goldstein was certainly effective (arguably even BOG in terms of influencing the result), but only when he was able to get away from Max for one reason or another.

Goldstein holds the game records for total-hitouts and hitouts-to-advantage, but IIRC this was against a team that had no ruckman for most of the game. Maxy almost took both those records off him playing against him. Another 3 of both and Goldie could have had the distinction of being BOG in a game where his opponent broke these records in one of the best displays of ruck work of all time.

It's not just his tapwork. His ball handling, kicking and tackling are all well above average for a ruckman. So is Goldstein's, which is why Goldy is such a formidable presence, just like Gawn is becoming.

Would't say Max's kicking is any better than average. He has great hands though and very good awareness. Helps set up those clearances and wins a few himself.

Goldstein's coordination and skills for such a big guy are amazing.

63 hit-outs = 2nd most for all-time VFL/AFL record. Our Champion!

edit: Not bad up against an opponent who many regard as the top ruck in the AFL.

Didn't Gerard Healy say last night that Gawn had 25 hit outs to advantage? Isn't that a record?

Beat me to it AF. Haven't been able to find the to-advantage stats anywhere but I suspected he must have been nudging the record. There almost needs to be a further division in the stats. As it is - to advantage where a tap leads directly to a possession. And then some super to-advantage where a tap leads to an uncontested chain. Big max has always shown flashes of creativity with the latter when he's had position and space. The pleasing thing is he's developing the more subtle former and mixing it up with both. We need to get him up for the duel against Grundy. He should have an absolute field day in the tap-work but we just need to be careful Grundy and the Pies' mids don't concede the tap on a shark-hunt.

Unless a ruck man is mobile and can pick up possessions around the ground I've always thought that the profession is overrated. However 25 hit outs to advantage is huge. Our biggest issue (admittedly of many) over the years has been constantly been beaten out of the centre or from throw-ins - losing clearances. Having first use 25 times extra a game won't guarantee a Nathan Jones goal every time but at the very least means the opposition hasn't got it. Max got 7 clearances himself as well.

It is very nice to feel that we have a reasonable chance of getting the ball out of centre and around the boundary line rather than it just being another opportunity to get an inside 50.

Viva La Max

if Gawny keeps this up he will make the AA team either as starting ruck or more likely on the bench behind Goldy

Would be amazing if he made it

    TRAINING: Monday 16th December 2024

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
