Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Max killed Goldstein on Sunday. All of his KPI apart from Goldstein's goals - some of them from very dodgy umpiring -  left the lanky Roo for dead.

This man is a solid rock, Tu Est Petrus, from which to build a Demon dynasty.

He'll no doubt get mortally wounded next week...

Yeh nah.

As Roos said, both Ruckmen were influential for their side on the weekend.

I'm not sure why people say such ridiculous things sometimes. I guess it's the one-eyed supporter thing.

63 hit-outs = 2nd most for all-time VFL/AFL record. Our Champion!

edit: Not bad up against an opponent who many regard as the top ruck in the AFL.

Whilst Max was on top in the hitouts vs Goldstein, I think you'll find that many of the hitouts he 'won' were also against Petrie and Brown whilst Goldy was resting.

People seem to think those 63 hitouts were all against Goldy.

Unless a ruck man is mobile and can pick up possessions around the ground I've always thought that the profession is overrated. However 25 hit outs to advantage is huge. Our biggest issue (admittedly of many) over the years has been constantly been beaten out of the centre or from throw-ins - losing clearances. Having first use 25 times extra a game won't guarantee a Nathan Jones goal every time but at the very least means the opposition hasn't got it. Max got 7 clearances himself as well.

It is very nice to feel that we have a reasonable chance of getting the ball out of centre and around the boundary line rather than it just being another opportunity to get an inside 50.

Viva La Max

Wasnt  JImmy Stynes the most mobile rucks too play the game. Thanks Jim.

Can't we just be happy with a very good performance against the best ruck man in the league? I'd wager most of the hit outs won were against Goldstein.

One of many things I love about Max's game is when he gets the hit out, often to advantage, he then doesn't stop, instead offering the shepherd or if not a clean possession to his 'rover' then goes in and gets it himself.

I can't recall seeing that in any MFC (and indeed in very few others) ruckman since Jimmy.

If you watch the second quarter, the entire comeback is virtually against Goldstein. This is backed by Gerard Healy in his summation around Gawn's goal when we hit the lead with around 11 mins remaining in the 2nd qtr. He was pivotal. In the quarter up until then he had something like 14 hits to advantage.

A direct and indirect influence on the outcome of this match in how we came back so hard in such quick time. Huge.

Your underestimating Gawns hitouts against Goldy. Il bet every dollar that majority of those 25 hitouts to advantage were against Goldstein. I have watched game twice now and Gawn did smash him in the ruck. The around the ground work was probably even considering Goldstein was gifted about 3 cheap goals.

That's the difference. If you remove even 2 of the gifted goals then I reckon Max wins the battle and we win.

Yep, he was enormous.

All this from a 24 year old with 42 games under his belt. If he continues on this trajectory, Max will be the best ruck in the game by next season.

I absolutely love that Gawn has taken full responsibility for his own game and set his own standards. He said he wanted to be the best ruckman in the game, had according to Roos the best preseason he has ever seen from a ruck and is now reaping the benefits. He may not quite be there as the #1 ruck in the league yet but he is making some very serious ground. He isn't afraid of failure or being conservative, he has publicly stated his desire and is doing everything he can to get there.

Last year Goldy beat him easily and I reckon Gawn is measuring himself against Goldy. He played his best game ever against what he aspires to be, displaying his competitiveness and improvement. A somewhat unlikely leader of the club now, full credit goes to him (and of course Stafford and the club for their work/faith).

To coin your phrase "Yeh nah." and "Yeh nah." You on the happy pills Debbie Downer.

Ah hem!  Sorry what's the position he plays again. Oh that's right RUCKMAN.

63 to 38 hit outs against the top ruckman in the league. 25 to 9 hit outs to advantage. And you say people saying he killed Gawny is saying "...such ridiculous things...."

You've got this the wrong way around. Goldstein plays the highest game time of any ruckman in the league. He would have rested less than Gawn which means a reasonable amount of his hit outs were against ah hem, Frost. Whereas they would have rested Gawn when Goldy was resting.

Plus 3 of Goldsteins goals were from howling umpiring mistakes. Gawny got 18 possessions v 19 against the best mobile ruckman in the comp.  When Cox started getting 18 possessions in a game it was regarded as a revolution and all the experts were calling him the greatest ruckman of all time getting unprecedented possessions.

Cheer up, there's something positive going on at the moment. Come on you can do it.  BE POSITIVE! Try it, you might like it.

I mentioned how Cox was attributed with changing the game because he was the first ruckman to start accumulating possessions like a midfielder, around 18 a game.  My 17 yr old son corrected me. He said do you realise Jimmy Stynes averaged over 25 (25.6) possessions per game in his Brownlow year 1991. He also averaged 23.4 in '92 & 22.2 in '93. His career average was 18.9. Unbelievable. However, lets not forget his primary role was as a ruckman and at only 199cm's he only averaged 10.7 hitouts in his Brownlow year and only 11.8 for his career average. As we've discussed Gawny got 63 on the weekend and 25 to advantage. He is going to be a weapon of rare impact in the ruck but he's still getting possessions around the ground that only a very select group of elite ruckman have achieved. He is undoubtedly on his way to becoming the greatest ruckman of all time. Please, oh please, Norm Smith and the other footy gods leave him alone.

'Gawn is physical, athletic and crafty, making him the complete package, and the greatest talent Melbourne has recruited in the modern era.

There is a long list of talented ruckman in the AFL, but we have just witnessed a change in the pecking order, with a red and blue warrior the best of all.'

We have the best young ruck, best young forward, and one of the most emerging midfields in the game. When we do rise, it should be rapid and sustained. Our list is in fairly good shape, we could probably just do with a KP back (Hurley).

We must have a good shot at poaching one or two of the banned gun Bombers with the Goodwin/McCartney influence plus we already have one of their mates in Jake Melksham.

"The future is limitless for Max Gawn, as he has the ability to become the greatest big man this game has ever seen. "

That sounds like something I told my son 5 years ago. I hope it is true.

Geez, I'm all for optomism but did he have blinkers on while watching the game. Goldsteins performance was pretty damn good. I agree Gawny has the the talent and is the right age but he needs to sustain this over the whole year and into the next few before he takes Goldy's crown.

"greatest talent Melbourne has recruited in the modern era."
This line though, could be however be the truest statement in the whole article. He is only realisticaly ranked as an "emerging" ruckman and is already the most important player in the side. Right now i think by quite a way.

This is exactly what has me dreaming of the 'impossible dream'.  As Max continues to develop his game (as I expect he will), our talented but inexperienced midfield should develop and grow around him.  Surely this will lead a period of sustained success, won't it?.  The dream is growing some legs.

I was pointing out a fact. Two facts actually.

One of them being that Gawn most certainly didn't 'kill' Goldstein on the weekend and if you chat to any sane, non-biased supporter, you'd find that none of them would be an agreeance with that exaggerated comment.

And the second fact is that the 63 hitouts were also against Brown and Petrie, who aren't ruckmen and more importantly, aren't Goldstein..

Facts.

Am I not happy? Un-cheered? Or underestimating Gawn's hitouts?

Of course not. But you lot seem to find it difficult to hear someone who might also praise the efforts of an opposition player who in the eyes of most non-biased supporters would say was equally as influential for their side. So difficult in fact that you chose to think I'm negative, un-happy and underestimating Gawn's hit-outs.

Gawn had an amazing game. Goldy had an amazing game.

See if you can repeat that without feeling sick.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
