Foolish breaking his toe, yes, trying to slam dunk.  But you do not stop living,  & live in a cotton wool box.   What if he hurt his back swinging a golf club.  Would you call him foolish for that?

There are a couple of things that I'd like to see Hogan get out of his game. One is throwing his hands up when a teammate doesn't kick the ball to him. The other is whinging to the umpires when he doesn't get a free. In the Saints game, he started whinging about a free when the ball was still in play and in his vicinity.

really,  well if that's the case,  lets stop all this talk of ultra long contracts...   let's let him be a footballer,  & stop pumping him up too high.

Maybe we should lock the Hogan contract thread for some months?

On the Hogan mention, when you have been a gun junior footballer who was always bigger than the other kids, you question why you need to do so many weight sessions,   "what does it actually achieve?  isn't it better to be outside with the footy in your hands?".....was told Jesse actually asked the very question

As for his behavior onfield, leave it alone it is all part of the package, when the defender grabs a handful of shirt in every contest you are entitled to complain

I wouldn't lump all indiscretions in the same basket - you are 100% right IMO, in not equating what he did with getting drunk at a night club and punching on. What we do know is that footballers rehabbing do have a list of do's and don'ts. I will make an assumption that if Roos is royally ticked off as he appears to be and making comment about habits and standards, then this is an activity he should not have been doing. It's not a capital crime but I am pleased that this current regime leaves the players in no doubt as to what they believe is required to bring success.

Again, this is reasonable. But he also copped to it, which is another fair point to mention when people are condemning a teenager as unprofessional. By all other reports he was highly professional and lauded for his approach to rehab for the larger part.

Anyone know how far along Petracca is at the moment?

I can only presume that he'll have a few games at Casey now before getting an opportunity in the firsts considering he missed the NAB challenge.

I prefer to think of it as making a wrong choice rather than label him as unprofessional.

yes, i'd think you would to have to make a few bad choices before being labelled unprofessional

however just to be anal, you could say the bad choice itself was an unprofessional choice

I think over the journey we have seen enough players at Melbourne who have truly earned the title of unprofessional....( if only he had a full preseason....)

Not sure what I said here that was inflammatory enough to be deleted? But I'll take the message and move on. Good luck to Christian. Can't wait to see the lad out on the field showing his wares.

Bottom line is had Christian not been silly enough to try and dunk during his ACL recovery, he'd be lining up for his first game in round 1 and would have played probably most of the NAB cup.

he's cost himself and more importantly he's cost the team and that's unacceptable.

Good article.

Players are well paid and trained to play and win football for our Club

No matter who the player is they cannot do anything about the game from the Grandstand...

Posted

To those saying Roos overrated just let me point some things out.

Christian is an employee of the MFC and is paid to play and represent this club

He did his knee and had to sit our for 12 months and while still undertaking rehab decided to slam dunk a basketball which we all know when you land you come down heavily on the legs, feet and body. If he was shoting around some basic shots then it would not have been an issue.

In doing this he broke his toe, setting him back another few weeks costing him a r1 debut game.

Unless basketball is specifically banned as part of his contract, what he did wasn't unprofessional. On the other hand, it clearly wasn't the smartest choice he made.

Does the club have to specify every single risky activity a player should not be doing in their contract?

no, why should they? it's common sense, and the issue is not 'basketball' as such, it's about risky procedures like slam dunking which you would know if you ever tried one, plus still being on a rehab program. (naturally, i am assuming he actually was slam dunking based on reports i can't verify)

It happens in a lot of professional sports leagues around the world.  Part of it is the teams covering their own financial backsides.

As I said before, I see it as the wrong choice (or an unwise one) given the situation. He should have thought things through better. I just don't see it as rising to the level of unprofessionalism.

Having regard to Paul Roos' season opening speech, my take on this public statement is that:

- Roos reckons there's some serious young talent on this list now - Hogan, Petracca, Brayshaw, Oliver et ors;

- notwithstanding this natural talent, the only way they'll unlock greatness is through a disciplined and commited work ethic and approach to preparation - simply winging it on natural ability is not enough; and

- Roos takes every opportunity to drill this message into them, publicly and privately.

Why? Because Roos has effectively rebuilt this list/club, he knows the list now has massive potential, and he doesn't want these young bucks to stuff it up through non-elite behaviours.

They simply have to get this stuff. And live it.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
