Here is the full story:  http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2016-02-08/deepening-our-china-connections

"TODAY marks the start of Chinese New Year with the arrival of the Fire Monkey under the Chinese Zodiac and Greenwood Capital as a new commercial partner of the Melbourne Football Club"

"Jackson further remarked that Greenwood Capital relies on relationships and believed “that as a partner of the Melbourne Football Club, we can assist Greenwood [to] develop further relationships with the broader Melbourne and Australian communities.”.

The opportunity to further expand the Club’s work with local Chinese communities, through this partnership was further reinforced by Jackson when he suggested that it will, “not only raise the awareness but increase the interest of AFL and the Melbourne Football Club among Melbourne’s Chinese communities so that we can continue to represent all elements of this great city”.

I guess it fits nicely with the new AFL Multi-cultural Academies, altho I'm not sure our allocated zone covers the Chinese communities.

The article doesn't talk to length of the sponsorship or what level but great news regardless.

MFC kicking more goals, off field!

Greenwood Capital is listed under "Major Partners" on the melbournefc.com.au website (2nd highest overall level), our "Principal Partner" of course being AHG. It is listed on the same level as China Southern, Northern Territory and New Age Caravans.

Make of that what you will.

Ka Ching....thankya very much !!

The Dees going once again for the cream of sum yung guy....

Aaaaaand I'll see myself out...

On a serious note though this is only good news for the club.  Another major partner means more $$$$ in the coffers and we can strengthen the links we already have with our Asian neighbours.  Good stuff.

I like the foresight the club is showing with its relationship with the Chinese population.  It is an untapped resource.

Go Dees

Go Dees

In fairness, the club has been trying to do this for almost a decade now so it's hardly new.

Slowly slowly quick quick slow... All good things in time :)

I'm going to be a bit wet-blanketish here and ask if anyone knows anything about the credentials of 'Greenwood Capital'. I'll be happy to hear good news. It's just that I think we've experienced the odd 'short term' (shall we say) sponsor before (Kaspersky anyone?) Mr Google tells me about a 'Greenwood Capital' from (I think) the US and a 'Greenwoods Capital' based in China, and 'Greenwood Capital Burwood' only brings up the MFC web page article. I also wonder to what extent "an investment company ... featuring a diverse portfolio including property, health centres, Australian food exports, and cultural exchange" will engage us with the 'Chinese community? I hope they can, and I'm not complaining about the income either (though: How much? What form?) Nor am I complaining about the strides that Peter J and his team continue to make. And I like the Chinese New Year association and activities (will definitely try to be there - I'm a child of the fireworks-for-all age!) I just don't want any egg on anyone's faces with this.

OK I'm prepared to admit that when Cameron Schwab took the team to China to do an exhibition match I didn't think it was going to do anything but cost money. But now we have a second significant Chinese sponsorship partner. Was it because the door was opened by that trip? Who knows? Perhaps credit where credit is due.

I have read that that trip introduced Liam Jurrah to alcohol with the disastrous consequences to that young man's life we have seen.

Also read that Scully packed up and went home because of the unacceptable behaviour in the group on that trip. Is that true? Who knows?

It's a funny world grass hopper. We know how the worm turned on Mr Scully's exit and delivered us the prodigal son. For that perhaps we can also thank the China trip.

The trip that just keeps giving.....or not.

And you can rest assured when things finally start looking very rosy in the Chinese relationship, the AFL will decide to start international zoning for clubs - and give China to Hawthorn and Essendon.

"introduced"?

liam came from a community literally wallowing in alcohol, not to mention other undesirable substances. he didn't see anything on that trip he hadn't seen a hundredfold in the NT or in any other social gathering in melbourne. it might well have been a starting point for his drinking, i don't know, but to suggest it was somehow an introduction to alcohol is drawing a very long bow

Hawthorn will pick the eyes out of that zone. Essendon will draft their female swimmers.

I suppose after years of Murphy's Law applying at the MFC, it's not surprising, but gee what a pessimistic lot we can be sometimes.

My name is going to give me a way to some on this one, but I know a fair bit of the background on Kaspersky and the sponsorship. A bit harsh to call it out as a "odd" short term sponsor. There was no major sponsor heading into the AFL season and a MFC member stood up and did something about it. It wasn't looked at as a 10 year opportunity, more how can a member and company support the club in a time of need. Energy Watch on the other hand..........

Sincere apologies: It was Energy Watch I was trying to think of. When I couldn't, Kaspersky came to mind, because I remember my "who are THEY?" reaction, me being on the computer-illiteracy spectrum (it was a great story how it came about though, I remember).

My question still stands, though: does anyone know anything more about Greenwood?

They've got oodles of money and want to give us some.

That'll do me ;)

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.
