I don't think so mate. I think it is time these players challenged themselves fully. For too long it has been "This is a development year" which takes of the heat.

I want Roosy to coach the MFC to at least one final with Goodwin his right hand man

I don't think that will happen, we don't have enough good seasoned players and the Kids are just that Kids and also assumes all of them will develop into players capable of getting us the finals this year. Sadly it will not happen in 2016.

The transition to Goodwin is not being treated as just a 'handball'. That implies avoidance of responsibility, a quick changeover and letting Goodwin sink or swim.

It should be gradual ... more like a series of transition moves linking from a defensive kick-out for a brilliant goal. ^_^

Probably taking the title a bit too seriously mate...

Which is exactly the same line that has been dragged out since 2008. And at the end of this season more players will leave with FA to grab that cheap flag.....

No more excuses.

All clubs are running kids. Just depends how hungry they are and the attitude in the head.

Think it's more about average age and experience and the quality of the peak age players. Bit shallow to just say "all clubs are running kids".

Not once the ball is bounced, it is all about attitude. Something this has not had for many years.

We have enough experience and raw talent to have a successful year, if the playing group push themselves harder than they have before.

The Colin Sylvia's and Brent Moloney's are gone...

It's not just about attitude, otherwise Jordie McKenzie would have been a superstar.

Ok Stuie. Just disagree will you

i don't have all afternoon. If we go through this year with the attitude of "We are not quite ready yet" as has been wheeled out for a decade then Roosy's time will be a failure. Yes he has turned over 30 odd players (thank God) but that is only half the job...

You have over simplified SWYL's comment Stu. He points out that we have the talent etc but it needs to be combined with the right attitude.

Imagine Col Sylvia with Jordie 's attitude.

Mate, I don't disagree with you about what our attitude needs to be, I just disagree that that is all it takes.

We also need talent, experience, good structures and game plans, fitness, a little luck with injuries...

Talent + Attitude = Experience

Jordie did the best he could

Brayshaw and Pretracca with the same attitude can taste September this year...

Maybe he will be for Essendon. Him and Bail are both amongst the players the AFL are pushing.

I can understand where you are coming from mauriesy, but I see two types of handball:

  • the first is the is 'old' Melbourne 'get out of trouble' handball ............ otherwise known as the 'absolve yourself of responsibility and put a team-mate under the pump'  handball;
  • the second is the 'new' Melbourne 'put the team to advantage' creative handball.  I know these have been a rare events at Melbourne in the past decade, but I'm banking on them being a feature of our game style from 2016 and beyond.

Surely the thread title is referring to the second type of handball, and should be left as it is  (lol).

It can be a no-look behind-the-back flick pass for all I care, so long as Roosy is holding the premiership cup at the time ...

For me,  I'd rather the club shut up about the Goodwin transition. He can do all the work behind the scenes but leave Roos as the public face.

That week reduce the pressure on him next year as rather than "you've had 12 months to prepare" it'll be his first year.

I expect it will be a successful transition but i know how far back this club was and have relatively low expectations for how quickly we will propel upwards.

Goodwin will be under the hammer from Round 1 2017. By then he will have had 2 years under Roos. Far more than most Rookie coaches get.

He will hopefully thrive with the pressure.

I'd love to hand off most of my job responsibilities and still be paid many times more than the bloke doing all the work.

I can't believe the unconditional love for Roos around here. He only took the job because we gave him a pile of money too big to jump over, and has hardly embraced the club with open arms like he did at Sydney. Will he finally start using "we" this year, or do we have to endure another 12 months of "they".

I would argue that the quality of recruits has been really poor given the status of the coach. Vince and Cross were good, but there was hardly great demand for their services. Lumumba is a bust and was overpriced. Ditto Melksham. There is certainly nobody approaching an A grader on that list, and we are clearly no closer to being a destination club.

Good luck to Roos - he has been paid a fortune over the journey and can spend this year doing media and whatever else takes his fancy, without forgoing his wage or his title. But I sure as hell hope that his self-appointed replacement knows what he is doing or we will be back here again in 5 years.

I really fear for people like yourself and munga and old dee. When we starting winning more than we lose, what will you do? The negativity from you guys is unrelenting. Maybe our ascent will coincide with North Melbourne's decline and you can follow them in an attempt to get your fill of doom and gloom. It's almost as if you're not happy unless you're unhappy. Roos was hired to do more than simply coach a team. He along with Jackson, Bartlett, Taylor and Mahoney have significantly altered the culture of the MFC. We are a professionally run club with a healthy focus placed on training habits, leadership, competitiveness and a team-first culture. Roos has made these areas his focus. If you can't see where we're going from here, I feel sorry for you. Our CEO is one of the best in the business. Financially we're far more sound with increased footy dept spending. Our coach is a proven architect and shaper of footy club culture. The positivity coming from the player group about Goodwin is incredible. Taylor keeps picking aggressive, skilled, athletic footballers at both ends of the draft. We have elite talent that is on brink of being realized. Now is the time, to buckle up and enjoy the ride. The love for Roos isn't unconditional, but the criticisms are focused on his pay packet, match day performance and contributions to our training sessions. I don't care how much he gets paid if the aforementioned culture is on the improve and we continue to post profits. I could easily find fault with his game day decision making but in the long term I'm more interested in the development of culture and the unearthing of quality footballers. And finally, the direction of most sports with increasing staff sizes is for the head honcho to oversee more and more and provide less hands on attention. Roos is clearly in big picture mode and Goodwin is running the gameplan side of things. And gameplans are honed during training. It makes sense that he is running the show on the training paddock. It seems to me at least that the transition with McCartney overseeing everything is working beautifully. As supporters we're not used to transitions. As Melbourne supporters we're not accustomed to being a part of cutting edge footy dept thinking. This is what it looks like.

I'm not sure about having a crack at fellow posters for expressing their views Goodvibes, but I reckon the bolded part of your post is 'spot on'.  Hopefully all Demonlanders will be 100% aligned to that view by the end of 2016.

Dear Mr Sir Why You Little… Yo mentioned" the playing group push themselves harder than they have before" The leadership group must install a system involving consequences for p.ss weak performances. The supporters deseve it and demand it. If players are not consistent they need to be punished by being drop to the reseves for several weeks. We have to cut  out the crap that spews out of some players mouth. Only the Captain should be allowed to comment on the teams performance after a match.

I don't want to speak on behalf of Goodvibes, and he is welcome to correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think he is having a crack at expressing their views - more that he feels sorry for them that their views are constantly negative, which they are.

They are always negative though.  It's rare to see them enjoying anything about the club which is a shame.

Good post as well Goodvibes, agree with all of it.

You're right. There's no need to highlight specific posters and I'm not usually in the habit of having a crack at fellow posters but I'm in a pretty positive place about my football team and whilst I agree that questioning aspects of our operation is healthy, I can't understand how so many can spend the majority of their posts finding negatives at a time when they're is so much to be positive about. My other team (Sheffield Wednesday) are also in a really positive place and it's amazing how many Wednesday supporters on their Demonland equivalent are so incessantly negative. I'm not sure if that can simply be put down to human nature or whether it goes with the territory for any team (and their supporters) that have gone through a sustained period of disappointment.

Anybody who has Sheffield Wednesday as a second team would have to read Lion and Tiger Comics

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started.
