A question for anyone that attended this year and last year. The commentary coming from WW seems to suggest the session is mainly skills and match simulation, whereas last year (memory ain't what it used to be) was all about fitness. Does there seem to be a greater emphasis being placed on skills now that the fitness levels are up to par?

WW great report, re the question, Misson has had his 3 years and now has a regimen in place, if you have a niggle you rehab until you can join in everything, where the emphasis is now on skills, hence Bernie Vince doing lap after lap and Brayshaw's 4 weeks in rehab

Thanks Saty. To me this is the most telling factor in how far we've come as a football team, and a real indicator of positive things ahead.

I've been cautiously optimistic at the start of recent seasons, but this year I'm all in. It's going to be a fun year for MFC supporters.

It's a long day for the players ... The club has just tweeted that the players have split up into groups this afternoon and are getting started for their massages.

I'm not certain about this but I have a feeling that we have a bigger rehab group at this point in time than we did this time last year. I seem to recall that Jack Trengove was out but not many others had anything more than a niggle.

Anyone know?

Maxy no hope. Only mids are a chance which gives Bernie a decent shot if we can win 10 or more games. I might have a nibble. Betfair will give much better odds than 80s i'm guessing

Last year: Vince (hammy), Howe (hammy), Trengove (foot), Petracca (ACL), Dawes (something!), Spencer and Terlich were recovering from surgeries.

This year: Trengove, Petracca, Vince, Dawes, Frost, Newton, Lumumba, Jetta

Pretty similar from what I can recall. Vince is just a finger so he should be ahead of where he was last year. Hopefully Jetta, and Dawes aren't far off full health and Petracca is back on his feet quickly after the 4 weeks. That would drop the numbers down.

FireInTheBelly... You're spot-on, big emphasis on fitness last year... Major focus on match-play this year

learning to compete & defend last year.... fit to chase & tackle... & not elevate too high as we still rebuild.

I guess now the time is prime to start to attack, & to win,,,  as long as the defensive side of habits are retained as well.

 

all systems 'a go go' .... retro thrusters all firing,  & its back to the future to remedy those things they went wrong back den.  And put things right.  This feels akin the the Apollo Missions from 1961... some wins,  & many flops,  till finally we get things right... but which mission are we currently up to at this time?

There's a picture on the MFC website (Day 2 training photos) of Mr. Hulett (I think). I call him Mister, because I would genuinely run the other way if I met him in a darkened alley....

 

And I can't believe he's only 18 years old and put on 4KG's since being drafted....

More in sole rehab last year I'd say. Especially noticed that a lot of the guys in the rehab group integrated into the matchplay a lot more than last year.


As I said earlier, Tyson was free of all tape (apart from regulation ankle strapping). He took part in all the drills and is looking fit and ready to fire!

Because of his ongoing knee issues last year, his fitness base dropped, so he has had to rehab and rehab as above

Clearly, training for AFL footballers has become a science. Oh I suppose I shouldn't mention that word. 

Iin the old days players, would train for 2 afternoons a week, for about 2 months, interspersed with beer and smokes.

Now every activity is programmed and every measurement detailed and recorded.

Even diet is now a major part of training.

Game plans involve countless meetings and hours of practice.

Training is over many sessions at all times of the week.

No wonder players,have no time for a job outside of football.

    The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match.The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

    The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
