Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

We had a lot of list turnover in recent years but all indications are it's likely to continue. 2016 is a big year for ..

Jack Watts: OOC Free Agent, likely to be UFA?

Chris Dawes: Last year of an expensive contract?

Heritier Lumumba: Didn't deliver value, contract may provide protection

Jack Trengove: It will be some sort of miracle if he gets back

Ben Newton: There's a lot of competition for spots now

Cam Pedersen: A one year contract

Viv Michie: See Ben Newton

Jay Kennedy-Harris: See Ben Newton

Jayden Hunt: This year it's time to show something

Jack Grimes: See Jack watts

Jake Spencer: Back up ruckman is a precarious role

James Harmes: See Cam Pedersen

Matt Jones: See Ben Newton

Dean Terlich: Only saved this year by his contract

Max King: Must continue to improve

That's 15 players realistically in the gun.

There's been a lot of talk on here recently about how close we're coming to having a great list, but based on those names you provided, there is still a fair bit of deadwood remaining.

While there is obviously still a lot of footy to be played, I think that M. Jones and Terlich are all but guaranteed to be gone.

Spencer/King's statuses will rely on both their own performances as well as the performances of the new big men that we've brought in.

Same goes for Dawes/Pedersen.

I'll avoid commenting on Watts at the risk of turning this into yet another thread about him.

Trengove's future is fully dependent on his foot. I really hope he can make it as he deserves a shot.

At this stage I think that Newton/Harmes have shown enough to make me confident in keeping them on as depth players for the foreseeable future.

Hunt is another who will need an injury-free run at things.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Grimes leave as an RFA for more opportunities if he struggles to establish himself as a member of our best 22.

JKH/Lumumba are safe due to their contracts. I also think that JKH is better than a lot of people give him credit for.

I won't comment on Watts in the hopes that this thread won't turn into another thread about him.

Jack Watts: OOC Free Agent, likely to be UFA? - I've always had the faith with Watts, here's hoping (again) that he can have that "break out" year. But overall wouldn't break my heart if he ventured elsewhere.

Chris Dawes: Last year of an expensive contract? - Thank goodness, free up the money for Hogan.

Heritier Lumumba: Didn't deliver value, contract may provide protection - Contracted to 2017.

Jack Trengove: It will be some sort of miracle if he gets back - Here's hoping he can come back and be the AFL player we once hoped.

Ben Newton: There's a lot of competition for spots now - He needs to step it up or his head will be on the chopping block.

Cam Pedersen: A one year contract - Pedersen vs. Dawes.

Viv Michie: See Ben Newton

Jay Kennedy-Harris: See Ben Newton - Was the flavour of the month at one point, I'm still and fan and would love to see more.

Jayden Hunt: This year it's time to show something - He can only play at the VFL level for so long, needs to show something or he'll be cut. Hopefully he can have an injury free run.

Jack Grimes: See Jack watts - I've been patient with Grimes so far, it will be his do or die year.

Jake Spencer: Back up ruckman is a precarious role - At this stage he's required on the basis if anything was to happen to Gawn. But he does need to improve his game considerably.

James Harmes: See Cam Pedersen - The glimpses shown by Harmes this year were impressive, I hope we see more.

Matt Jones: See Ben Newton - Youngsters looking to overtake, I doubt he'll make the cut.

Dean Terlich: Only saved this year by his contract - I doubt he'll make the cut.

Max King: Must continue to improve - He can only play at the VFL level for so long, needs to show something or he'll be cut.

Dawes.

I can't see him getting a decent new contract. Pedo offered more than him last year both in rucking and scoring before doing his wrist.

With Weideman now on the list, who I think will get half a season worth of games in preparation for 2017, Dawes might be offered a one year deal for a bit of depth.

Didn't Watts sign a 3 year deal at the start of 2015?

Josh Mahoney.

- Managed the trade period exceptionally well, but the final judgment of it will be made based on the success of our top 10 picks and our win loss record when it comes to next year's draft

- Has a few big contract issues to sort out. Watts, Dawes & Hogan lead that category

- Will be the consistent figure as the club handles the Roos/Goodwin transition

- Is the key figure in our attempts to finally lure a "big fish" next year (Prestia or O'Meara would be the most obvious targets)

- Will possibly be leading a review of Misson and his crew

Not sure why they don't use Grimes in a lock down role and free up Bernie. Grimes is super fit and can defend. Could be a Crowley...

Love his commitment, its just his disposal tthat has to be fixed..

Grimes won't be done as an AFL player post-2016. The question will be whether or not he plays for the MFC, should he find himself falling down the pecking order.

He's frustrated over the years but I hope he sticks around. There's something to be said for players who absolutely bleed red and blue, and he's a credit to himself and the club in everything he does.

He showed some positive signs last season. Just needs to build on that and take his opportunities.

You just answered your own question.

Freo worked out that there better off without a Crowley.

Good call on Grimes playing that role.

I feel he makes too many mistakes from a skill perspective that seem to always result in turnovers but he's such a great reader of the play from that half back line.

I don't reckon he has the agro to be a lock down player, and (as evidenced by Crowley) the era of the pure tagger is seemingly over.

2016 is a big year for me. I have to make one thoughtful, considered, relevant, meaningful contribution to one forum. One, at least one, then I will feel I'm pulling my weight.

I'm not Robinson Crusoe on that score though!!!!

Yes, Grimes has courage but little physical presence in the way that Salem, Jetta or Milkshake have. He needs to be able to rebound more effectively, particularly with decision making and delivery. His speed is not great either.

He doesn't read the play or move well enough in close to be a midfield tagger. His best attributes are his work rate and run and so it's either half back or wing for him.

Besides not being a great kick his biggest issue has been that he's just too slow of mind to work his way out of trouble and doesn't have physical gifts to break tackles or evade them.

He looks stronger and fitter this year, but if he can't get back to the tempo of AFL footy then I think his career will be over. Not many clubs will want him if we discard him.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
