Played 22 games in two seasons

I would've thought that's a pretty good report card for that this point of a career.

However, he's a bottom six best 22 player when he manages to get a game and that's where our depth lies within the list and turning blokes over like JKH every couple of years will not help develop the team.

and if compare his career to date with the bloke taken the pick ahead of him, then we're doing very well for ourselves. Fact is he'd probably walk into the 22 as a small forward with Richmond, Carlton, Essendon at the least.

Gotta lose players next year to make list space. Terlich Hunt Jones and who else?

I have JKH next on that list.

Other players out of contract next year include Spencer, Grimes, Dawes, Watts, Pedersen, King, White & Harmes to name a few.

There's a few other players on that list who probably have a right to be a bit more nervous then JKH.

But he also kicked 40 goals. Small forwards can survive on low possessions if they make the ones that they do get count.

That's his big problem. Small forward with little impact on scoreboard. All the best small forwards make the best of limited opportunities because that's the nature of their role. Ask Rioli, Ballantyne, Walters and Co. It's a tough position to play effectively.

Needs to put in a big pre season and find his spot and keep it, if he can.

With the 3 new blokes in, Garlett entrenched, Kent, AVB and hopefully Petracca and Trengove back, it is going to be hard for JKH.

Out of that list JT no games Kent gone after round 5 Petrecca no games JKH has value I like him I reckon he can make it.

The answer to the question of where to from here for JKH is simple. He stays on the list and works his butt of to improve and at best is in the best 22 and at worst is a good depth player.

It always puzzles me that people don't seem to value people who are not best 22, you need them to fill in for the best 22 when injured or suspended so the better the players are who are not best 22 are the better off your team will be. I can't remember who said it but the success of a team is more determined by the strength of the worst 6 playing that the strength of the best 6. We have been really bad in the worst 6 department for ages, that is changing and JKH is part of that picture.

Anyone remember when he disobeyed the team plan and ran down the other end of the field to try mark a kick in, dropped it caused a turnover which Collingwood goaled from effectively losing us the game?

What I find fascinating is JKH's ostensible drop in training standards.

Many here will recall his first pre-season after getting drafted, where he trained like a man possessed. Posters from this site (who's contributions cannot be understated) consistently described his overall effort, intensity and enthusiasm at every training. He was in everything and it was no surprised when that translated into exceptional form in the season proper.

What is interesting is that there was little-to-no mention of any of that type of intensity by JKH over the last pre-season. One has to wonder whether he was trying to build respect in his first year, and simply rested on his laurels over the last. In his defence, and as mentioned previously, second year blues of that nature are typical of young players.

All-in-all, it's clear that there is enough talent there that he could potentially be an above average AFL player. I'll be watching with interest to see the way he attacks the upcoming preseason.

No some of his last games showed by when we have our best 22 up and running Grimes is not in it. Will be lucky to play 6 games next year.

JKH is quick and unpredictable.

But I think he can play and I rate him with ANB,Stretch and VDB as available forwards .

Did I say delisted? Grimes will be 27 at the start of next season, maybe it's time to stop waiting for the improvement or the "breakout year"...

JKH will be 21 at the start of next season.

The kid's young, small and learning. How about we actually give him some time. Jayden Hunt has been on the list just as long and has never stepped foot on an AFL field but there's no thread about him...

Jay Kay is a victim of his own early success. Had he debuted this year I'm sure everyone would be rapt with him.

Not desperate enough, will struggle for a game unless intensity lifts! IMO

He's not quick. Every other poster and footy watcher knows this. Makes sense then that you wouldn't.

He's definitely not a pure forward but still 2 goals from 8 games this year is pretty poor. Has to find more of the ball to stay in the team, especially given his size (his legs are tiny). I wouldn't have him on the chopping block until maybe 2017 if he hasn't improved, but he will find it tough to crack the 22 with a fit list

JKH is not a small forward, it was the same a Jetta and Bennell they never looked comfortable in that small forward role. JKH has one thing that Jetta and Bennell didn't a reasonable tank, he can be a midfielder. Unfortunately, I think he is so far down the pecking order as a midfielder that he will struggle. He also lost his kicking, first year couldn't miss a goal, this year couldn't kick

I think Jkh possesses some nice skills, but like many have pointed out he does have his limitations.

When players like Harmes, Vanders start getting games ahead of you off the rookie list you have to wonder where you fit.

I don't see Jkh fitting in as a mid, and as a forward I think a few have lept ahead of him in the depth chart. Good small defenders don't grow on trees, so if he could be coached to play like jetta then he could revive his career as a backman like some have suggested.

If he doesn't crack the side for at least 5 games in 2016, I think club and player will part ways.

Every good team has good, or at least reasonable players, at places 22-30. Some stagnate there, and contribute when asked, and some move upwards to best 22. Players (maybe other than the occasional tall) filling these rankings need to have more than one string to their bow so can't expect to "own" a specific position. Without these versatile back ups teams struggle as the season wears on. Some posters here seem to expect that every player on the list of 40 should be best 22. Maybe maths isn't their strong point.

JKH is at least in that 22-30 range, better than several of last year's "depth players". Some seem to love to name anyone not best 22 (or even 18) as "spuds" or "duds"!

He was everywhere in his first preseason. He put the rest of our players to shame. But they start late, do much less and are probably on a wave after the draft.

I've seen JKH around town a couple of times. Not [censored], maybe not even drinking, but out and about. It might not be a coincidence that his good mate Luke McDonald had a down year as well. Rising stars one year, to the 2nd year blues, not a surprise.

Anyway, he was top 5 in an early time trial last year. That's promising. I wonder if Garlett coming in as the first choice small forward took away a bit of his confidence.

But forget all the negatives. He can find the ball, he can kick the ball, he has clean hands. There's plenty to work with and if it takes a year or two to come good that's ok. If JKH is our 30th best player then we are going ok.

I hope he proves me wrong but I don't rate him very highly so far. For someone his height he isn't quick, can't take a mark, kicking isn't great but his agility seems ok. Reminds me of Jetta a bit.

You're basing your opinion on training reports? And that he has dropped off his standards?? Holy cow. What kind of assessment is that?

Have you been to training and seen this with your own eyes? Have you heard anyone at the club say that?

Finally, "you'll be watching the way he attacks the upcoming pre-season". Is that reading training threads? If you don't see his name does that mean he isn't trying? Or will you be attending all the training sessions to make a considered opinion?

Cannot blame poor player development, we now have in Brendan McCartney who is known as best in business. Like Toumpas there are players who are just not up to it, give JKH another year though, he's still young!!
