Only vague memories, Tim. Please remind me who hit him that time.

(was it that rough StKilda ruckman who later played for us? I can't think of his name)

One of our more memorable games these last 50 odd years: Elimination Final 1987. North Melbourne's 18 yo Shaun Smith whacked by Mr Dean Chiron, former St Kilda player. Our boy got a week, and was back for the Prelim.

I'm sure it was Shaun Smith sitting in a hole in front of the fat thug and getting smashed. Knocked out.

Love this comment from him: “For me to run out on the G and play for Melbourne would mean the world to me and I’d make the most of the opportunity,” he said. Hope he gets a run in the seniors this year (2016) and have that dream come true! Line him up next to Jesse!

Sounds very similar to comments made by Viney in his draft year.

Smoky!! Expect him to come on rapidly! Like the look of him already!

How can you like the look of him? You haven't even seen him!

That said, actually having seen him play could well be an impediment to your judgement.

It was with Juice Newton...

The photo of him standing next to his dad makes him look good. Has a nice build and good height. He played u16's so should have the basic skills he needs.

I played under 16's too, but I don't think my skills would be up to scratch...

I'm excited about his physical attributes, especially the leap and basketball ability. However transitioning to playing AFL with little recent football experience will take an immense amount of work, particularly on his skills. I really hope he makes it though and will make the effort to go and see him at Casey early next year (and hopefully at the G later in the year!).

This too is a fair point. I sometimes forget how big a step up there is between the age groups for teen sports. It's one I failed to make, so you'd think I could relate.

I am a jaded MFC supporter - I don't expect much at all...

I applaud the decision - Category B rookies have been an underutilised resource at this club - but it is tough enough to make it coming from elite footy programs, he is coming from another sport.

What's the latest on Son of Smith? How's he tracking, training and Caseying? What position is he likely to be developing into?

Showed a bit with Casey early but has been out injured lately - due to return in a week or two.

I was very impressed with"SOS"s form yesterday.

I'd be very surprised if he's not upgraded next year.

He looks to me as if he could be a very useful contributor to our backline next season.

Could he play midfield?

His attack on the ball, his decision making, and his disposal  all impressed me.

I was a great admirer of his dad Shaun's guts, standing his ground in "the hole" to be crashed by the likes of Lockett.

Shaun Smith, like another brave Demon hero of mine, Steven Icke, was a fantastic transfer from North.

I'm so glad we have Joel as a Demon.

Spelling of Shaun

Agreed he looked great yesterday, especially after Salem went down. His attack on the ball and man was a feature... composed with ball in hand and a similar size to Garland. I like the kid

The next Jayden Hunt.

Has speed to burn and his leap is very impressive.

Agree. having not really seen much of him this year i was surprised how effictive he was, particulalry in the first.

Great pick up i reckon, particualry given it is essentially a free throw at ths tsumps. Played a lot of junior football so not a footy novice like the import B rookies, comes accross from basketball -  and increasingly those skills are highly transferabl - and not only that has been playing in elite basketball systems since late teens so was pretty fit and fully up to speed on the dedication and discilpine required to be a professional athlete.

As an aside, the current Hawthorn coach is another that could be added to that list.  Was not an out and out superstar, but a very serviceable player for us none the less.

So Casey watchers.....where do you see him fitting in?

HBF / mid?

Listed at 190cm, 85kgm - is this how he looks and plays?

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
