4 competitive types in that whole list, and none of them a maniac like Viney.

Oliver (by reputation) certainly signals a continuation of a very un-Melbourne direction. I hope he is as crazy at the ball as we have heard. Madmen with skill, win finals.

Wouldnt we all love to see a winning final again?

Good article on Oliver in the local Echuca paper.

There really hasn't been much talk about any of the kids we drafted this year, even Clayton. He seems like he's the most likely to break into the team, however does not seem like he's starring at training at all?

(Re-post, as I responded to the incorrect poster)

The following is from an article linked at the bottom:

“The thing that stands out for me is his competitiveness. The club wants guys who have a crack and compete for 100 percent of the game. He’s certainly one of those blokes,” Brayshaw told aflplayers.com.au at last week’s AFLPA Induction Camp.

“The guys have already given feedback that he’s a super competitor and we want to play with him because of the way he goes about it on the training track.”

I'm not sure what you expect from an 18 year after 10 weeks on the training track, or why you think he'd be "starring", but it appears the players and club are happy with his progress.

I think this is really good news, we are not putting kids under pressure anymore and expecting them to come straight in as the saviours.

We now have some real star power at the club, let the kids develop. By the way, from what I've seen of him at training he is a big chance to play game 1...he's just not expected to win it for us.

Yeah, it's simply that I've seen nothing of Oliver and am far more excited to see the development of the players we already have. We're not hoping for hints of potential anymore, we want to see if any of talented youngsters are ready to make the step and become genuine stars of the comp. Salem, Tyson, Viney, Gawn, Brayshaw, Kent, Hogan are all exciting prospects, with Hogan probably already there.

What an excellent article. So much to read between the lines to see how far we've come from the nightmare years a few years ago.

We now have a coaching staff gun young players want to play under, genuine role models at the club for the new recruits to model their game off, low expectations on young players, and fucken etc.

I like Oliver so far. He's exactly who he is no matter who he's talking to. Nice to get a break from all the footy cliches that everyone else busts out about 'the boys' and what not. He also looks pretty good at football which should also help.

Etc.

New article today on the Dees website:

http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2016-02-17/oliver-tempers-expectations-in-first-year

“I’m not really expecting too much. I probably won’t be ready for AFL just quite yet, so I’d be happy with a couple of games. I’ll stick to VFL and develop my football and I hope to be at the club for a few years,” he said.

I really don't like this...

The last player I heard this talk from was Lucas Cook.

I liked the comment from Weideman recently saying he was pushing for a game first round, he probably won't get there but why put limitations on yourself.

Oliver doesn't seem to be an overly confident kid and maybe this is his way of dealing with things, set expectations low and overachieve on them.

I sure hope so.

Nice article. Like the Clarry nickname and looking at the vision he is quite a solid lad.

Best part though, as others have mentioned, is there isn't the expectation from Club or supporters that he and the Weed are going to drag us up the ladder over the next couple of years. They will be left to develop whilst the pressure to improve the team will rightly fall on our older young guns like T Mc, Tyson, Hogan, Viney, vnB, Kent etc.

Almost like a proper football team

He's a country boy so maybe unlikely to have big tickets on himself. Maybe he is repeating what he has been told.

Yes, much better to undersell and over perform

Who was the coach a few years ago who came out before the season and said they they would play finals and got sacked half way through the season after barely a win?

I like the speak softly but carry a big stick approach

I really think he is just not super confident with the media yet so probably sticking very close to what the coaches are telling him, no pressure, just develop your footy.

i personally reckon he'll play about 10 games this year, i reckon the weid might be looked after a bit, so he can develop his body

Are you being serious?

He said he didn't expect to be drafted and went at pick 4. Now he's saying he' s not AFL ready and would be happy with a couple of games.

I wouldn't read any more into it than he appears to have a lower opinion of his potential than many others. He looks to me to be a kid who will let his footy do the speaking. He'll probably still be speaking like this when he's accepting his first Brownlow.

Jack Viney is in the top 3 most important players on our list, and the quotes in that article illustrate part of the reason why.

‘‘Jack Viney has probably been the one I’ve admired the most,’’ Oliver said.

‘‘Just how hard he is at training, and how competitive he is in everything he does.

‘‘He just hates losing so that’s someone who’s been a bit of a role model for me.’’

I was guessing this to be the consensus from demonland, nothing wrong with him making fair assessments of where he is sitting in the midfield and at the end of the day, he should want to get his body ready for an AFL standard.

Regardless of this, Brendan McCartney has a very high opinion of Clayton Oliver and said that he is a "really special talent" and "has somethign that most draftees dont have"

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
