I don't know this has been answered in any of the 300 odd pages of this Essendon drug crap, and I'm not about to go looking through it but does anyone know the actual date that Melksham will be allowed back to the club?

Cheers.

I was worried it was 12months to this time next year which would put him even further back with no pre season for the 2017 season

lets hope he walks in like a new recruit fresh and ready to go

as opposed to a "damaged" individual

I find this odd tbh. WADA bans prohibit contact/training with clubs during the ban.

Something screwy about this.

Out of all the clubs with banned players we definitely got off the lightest and the timing works out well enough as the list is into the early stages of having legitimate depth.

I look at it like it's a player that's going to be out for a full season, which obviously isn't good, but with there not being an injury I don't think there could possibly be a better scenario for a player to miss a season of football. Without losing fitness or doing any rehab he's going to be hungry as all hell to get back and make up for lost time, along with repaying the faith shown in him by the club. Melksham in 2017 is a seriously exciting prospect.

And on top of that, I rate Melksham. He was drafted in a year I paid a lot of attention to (we had picks 1,2,11,18)- he stood out as an under 18 and has been one I've kept an eye on since the draft.

For the simple minded maybe. You can keep shaking your fist all you like, I'd rather use this event to have a constructive discussion about footy club culture, the blind trust of leadership that's expected and what this means to those things.

Can this thread please return to talking about Melksham rather than about each other? If not, dazzle's prediction will come to pass pretty soon.

"For a full year this bloke is not allowed near the premises. How else can it be looked at"

Hogan - missed his first year

Petracca - missed his first year

Trengove - hasn't played since 2014

Frost - missed nearly all of his first year with us

Gawn - barely on the park his first few years

It's your own "logic" mate, if you think it's "censored" then you're giving a clear indication of how much sense you're actually making.

stuie - very different.   All the others were allowed and in fact used full club facilities, support teams etc

Can someone please make clear what the penalty against Melksham means with respect to the following:

  • is he allowed at the club's rooms (eg, gym) when the rest of the team or club officials are not there?
  • is he allowed to see any of the club's officials (eg, physio, dietitian, etc) away from the club rooms?
  • can he maintain fitness by playing in any other football competition other than the AFL or VFL?
  • can he maintain fitness by playing any other non-football competition (eg, basketball) if he's good enough to do so?

PS: And can Stuie, SWYL, C&B etc, take it outside and stop hijacking this thread.

I suspect the answers to all are no, and the last at least with any teams that are affiliated with any ASADA / WADA affiliated competitions.

Hopefully not even backyard basketball with Christian Petracca  :-)

He must not have any association with the football club facilities or their employees / players.

I don't know if he can play amateur sport, but professional sport is a no no.

I don't think we will allow him to train with us in September.

We will be in the middle of our finals campaign.

Yeah I get that. The context in which I was using those examples was the posters saying we might as well delist Melksham seeing he's going to miss a year. At 24, he still has plenty to offer us when he comes back and should be able to give us years of service, so seems silly to me to "cut our losses" as some put it.

The Hun reports that fitness staff cannot prepare programs or run training sessions for the players.

But Matt Finnis says Carlisle will have a program prepared for him so that he will be spot on for 2017 season.

The penalties for not adhering to the WADA code is enormous.

If found not to be adhering. They can then have the 2 year ban added on to their existing ban. (ie) Nov. 13 2016 will then become Nov. 2018.

who will be the first to slip up?

Don't think "completely cold" is accurate WYL. Maybe if they were 18 year olds brand new into the system, but Carlisle (and Melksham) have been around long enough to know what their fitness, dietary and training requirements are and should be able to keep it up off their own bat. Notwithstanding the fact that you would expect them to, at the very least, hire a personal trainer for the duration.

Not so sure on Carlisle, but Melksham strikes me as the sort of person that would feel like he'd have something to prove in 2017 and that he owes us.

With no contact and no salary there is very little incentive. He might be all good now but time can change a lot.

What happens to all of these 34 players we cannot predict  i always believed CAS was going to come down hard once the evidence was shredded and lost.

I still do not think the AFL Community fully understands the consequences of this ban.

The 34 are damaged goods. How damaged we are yet to know

If by completely cold you mean doing all the usual pre-season training, then yes.  And do you really think that any serious player will not spend between now and Sept 2016 doing private training. I'm sure that could be programmed without breaking any WADA rules if sensibly and carefully organised. Well I would be sure except  the brain-dead responses from the AFLPA people makes me wonder if there is anyone with the necessary intelligence to organise it.

Of course it is a long time and some of the 34 still currently intending to play will fall through the cracks for various reasons.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
