There's not many players retiring or due to retire which I consider will without doubt be a senior coach one day.

The two that are, and have been standouts over their career in my opinion would be Luke Hodge and Steve Johnson.

Hodge's form clearly warrants another one or two years given where the Hawks are, challenging for another flag.

Johnson however has called time at Geelong and possibly, within the next week or two call time on his professional career altogether.

But let's say he doesn't. Is he the type of player to help fast-track our younger brigade by playing with them for a year or two and then assuming a coaching role?

We're years off challenging for a flag and with dead wood such as M Jones, Bail, Jordie Mc, et al about to be moved on, the question is whether we approach Johnson to bring a more daring and attacking player to our list.

I'm keen.

Im not sure he would want to play for us because he wont win a flag with us in a year or so, but maybe an assistant coach could be good. Apparently he has a great footy brain and tactically very smart. I do wonder if we need to get some fresh voices in.

FFS No

Why?

No, too old unfortunately. He would play 4 games and be suspended every other game because he would be so frustrated at how chit we are.

Why?

Selfish. Old. Slow - we need pace.

Has been great but can't see the point at this stage of his career. Sick of our club being used to top up has been players superannuation.

Yeah, but he's clearly a step above the depth we currently have on the list and a step above most of the type of player you allude to.

Has lost his pace and is starting to succumb to injury.

But most of all, absolute culture killer. Massive no from me.

A culture killer who has 3 flags against his career.

Please elaborate.

Absolute [censored] head of the highest order, I'd find it hard to support the Dees if he played here.

True he is better than our depth, but Stevie has a long history of getting frustrated and lashing out, getting himself suspended. As someone has already mentioned, if he was to play for us, he would get frustrated a lot and suspended just as much

Gary Moorcroft once played for the Dees and most fans still supported the Dees.

It can be done.

Right up until he won us games.

Sure.

See also Jason Akermanis. Brownlow medallist, critical part of triple-premiership era. Champion of the game. Would love a player of his type on our list.

But he's an absolute [censored].

Nah, I see Stevie J. running a pub in retirement. Can't see anything about him that screams of coaching material, in fact he'd be the last person I'd imagine as a senior coach.

Old, slow, selfish, struggling with form and his career ending.... perfect fit. Get him.

A real footy head with a great understanding of the game apparently, doesn't mean he can coach.

Mick McGuane anyone?

A HUGE NOOOOO FROM ME!

Sheeit we just axed Crossy!

This Bloke plays for himself only, has Brian fades and is too old!

Got to watch out for those Brian Fades...

Watched him closely this year and he's had it. I know his stats are OK, but he should retire.

Agree, he's been trying to get by almost on skill alone, and when the teammates aren't good enough to "clean up" his more ambitious attempts, it goes pear shaped very quickly.

Sorry stevie, but it's the end.

Well let's see, there's the public drunkenness and resulting club suspension, the time he lost his license for speeding, the pinching, head butting, and charging....

Not everyone who has won a premiership is a good example of culture.

Another question, has he ever been in Geelong's leadership group?

It's a moot point anyway. If he plays anywhere next year it will be for a side that's in with a shot at a flag. That won't be us in 2016.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons have the Bye next week but then are on the road once again when they come up against the Gold Coast Suns on the Gold Coast in what could be a last ditch effort to salvage their season. Who comes in and who comes out?

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
