Training - Friday 24th July, 2015

Went down to training for an hour this morning. Cold. Good to see Petracca kicking and running, albeit away from the main group. Seems very 'up' and must be keen to get on the park.

Kent was also away from the main group and didn't stay long.

Pedersen was helping the ruck group by tossing the ball up and in with his left hand. Seems to be a good feeling out there.

Brendan Mc is very vocal during training and is constantly urging greater effort from the young ones.

Training drills ... pretty much what they normally do but they were going pretty hard at each other when I left.

Nearly forgot, Frost was there as well but mainly as a spectator.

How good is it to have so few 'outs'?

I looked for Trengove but couldn't see him. He was the only one that I looked for but couldn't find. I meant to say that Fitzie looks as though he's now out of the rucking group and trains as a defender.

Drove past before training was on and Kent was running laps at 3/4 pace. Looked ok to me but clearly no need to be rushing him back. But geez id love him to run around for Casey again this week n come back for the Pies!

Fitzgerald is training as a defender, doing well apparently at VFl level, played as a defender t AfL level and did well when he got the chance.

I would've thought Fitzgerald may have come back this week as StKilda have a very tall forward line.

I had a look for a while on Wednesday but never got round to starting a thread so I'd post some observations in here. Hope it doesn't confuse things too much.

Didn't see Jamar on track. But everyone else was out there. Frost and Trengove not doing much. Kent running laps at a solid pace. Petracca on the far wing surrounded by 3 support staff working between some cones.

Pedersen using his left arm to knock balls to the ground in a drill, running some laps then later doing a lap of the tan whilst I was over there. For what it's worth I think this injury could be the making of him for a couple of good years. If he puts in a super long preseason he could get to the consistent fitness level that allows him to play his best footy.

Dawes did some training then was just kicking footies as part of a drill. Vanders and Hogan took an early finish.

The team mainly worked divided in 3 or 4 groups for smaller activities focussed on ball movement. 4 on 3 handballing within a 30 by 30 square for mids. 5 on 4 kicking around the defensive 50 for the backs and so on.

The backs did another interesting drill where 1 would have to run back with the flight of the ball, 1 circle around for the handball who then hit up the 45 degree kick, followed by the far wing defender linking up and kicking forward.

Our games might be slow and stodgy but training was certainly on quick ball movement. There was a drill focussing on clearing a pack out the back but then quickly getting in through the corridor and hitting up targets inside 50 both to the skinny and fat side.

I didn't focus too much on the individuals but Jayden Hunt still has a very thin body, his torso is tiny and he doesn't have much size in the hips. I don't think we'll see him this year in any hurry. Billy Stretch on the other hand seems to have added some size in the legs.

Probably the thing that made me smile the most out of the session was seeing Salem's quick release and effortless flight on his kicks. He's on another level to the rest of our players by foot.

While we're on the topic of Jack Watts - In that horrible game last week against Brisbane, where we did our bet to let them back in by causing unnecessary stoppages and kicking down the line (I almost thought Mark Neeld was back!), it was Jack Watts who was able to open up the play with great vision and beautiful kicking to position. Every time he got it (admittedly not enough), I breathed a sigh of relief because I knew the ball would end up somewhere to the team's advantage. I think his role as a sweeper is probably his best and he is very valuable to the team.

By the way, heard yesterday that Darling has a 15-year-old cousin in outer Melbourne who is tearing it up as a junior.

Apparently Richmond have been out to see him a few times and are in his ear already about taking him in 2018.
