POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 16

Recommended Posts

The worst game of footy I've witnessed in a long time. The stoppage game is okay when we are trying to match it with stronger sides but we caused stoppages when we didn't need to!!

We almost let them back in to the game! All we needed to do was kick a couple more goals and bury them but instead we had stoppage after stoppage. Eventually they started to play with a bit more flair and all of a sudden they were within striking distance. The only thing that saved us is that we were more effective at constipating the game.

Daniel Cross is a great judge of the ball in the air, a great pair of hands, courageous and determined. But i don't want him kicking the ball in the back 50!

Dom Tyson is a lazy kick. On numerous occasions his casual up and unders caused turnovers. He needs to address this if he is to reach his potential. Today i wanted to drag him!

Jack Watts was the only one I trusted with the ball in the back 50.

Cross has really upped his kicking rate this year. (162 kicks, 166 handballs compared to 123, 244 last season)

The defensive shape of the team was just amazing. The Lions were not allowed to go through the middle and had to adopt these huge switches to Lewis Taylor who is willing but not the most creative with the footy.

Players went back in their shell after HT but, again, so disciplined.

Oh, and this needs to be legislatively addressed, the game needs a push in the right direction. The defensive structures and stoppage explosion is a blight at the minute.

did you actually read what i said? Clearly not. So here it is again for you:

ANB to me is someone i'm just not sold on. Reminds me a lot of Grimes in the way he goes about it. Will need to watch him more before i make any sort of decision on him.

Now to break it down even more for you, I mean in comparison to other youngsters that just look the part already. Never said he wouldn't make it, just said i am not sold on him yet like other youngsters. Which i then followed by saying i will have to watch more of him before making a decision on him, like some other posters do by either calling him a "future star" etc.

So really to say i have him in "my sights" is just absolutely incorrect, because if anything i am allowing him to play more games before i make my mind up about him.

Totally agree that aside from game against Geelong, he is yet to really have much of an impact and compared to other first year players Vanders and Brayshaw, he is a long way back.

But in his defence, is that he has primarily been asked to earn his stripes as a small forward - which ain't an easy gig when you have played midfield most of your life ad don't have explosive speed like Jeffy. But V and B have also had to earn their stripes the same way and look far more accomplished and strong with their body positioning and aerial skills.

Ultimately we won't know how good (or bad) he is until he gets a go in the centre - but that's a hard possy to get game time nowadays with Viney, Vince and Jones first picks and Prestia on his way.

I'll take this win anyday. But I'm more worried about the next day when we play with the same mindset but suddenly leak 5-6 goals against a better side. I hope today's win has shown that we've turned the corner. But it must just show that Brisbane really suck.

Last year's game they kicked 6 in a row to end the game

This year they missed several gettable goals. It could so easily have turned pear shaped if not for their inaccuracy. We were very lucky to win despite playing very badly in the second half.

Jeez some people are never pleased.

Take the win and look forward to next week. This was Brisbane's strongest side they put out all year and I expect them to get a couple of wins this latter part of the year.

Im expecting them to beat North next week.

I have grave concerns over the future of JKH. I'm just not sure he has the tools.

He doesn't. He hasn't taken a step forward since being drafted.

Having played a whopping 21 games in his career. Yes he made mistakes but he takes the game on which is what we need. Needs better awareness and to work on his disposal.

Considering how many games we've gifted Grimes 91, Jordie 79, M Jones 48, I would like to see him persisted with. Even if he's the sub.

What it shows is that when we're not ascendant in the game we can still dig in, lock it down and force a nil-all draw. Admittedly, we showed it against a team with no credible tall forwards, but tall forwards aren't how Brisbane beat us last time are they? They did it with manic running and goalscoring smalls. We prevented them from hurting us with that today, so I'm happy.

I thought last year they beat us with dominant no-name forwards Close anf McStay?

I bet Roos is absolutely spewing we aren't sitting 12th on 7 wins, especially as we tire coming into the end of the season.

I reckon the young kids are knackered and if we don't get over the Saints, we'll struggle to get another win locked away this year.

I disagree with this nonsense about young players being tired. The younger you are the more energy you have. As you get older you get more tired.

In sport a weaker team can drag you down to their level. It's a fact.

Yes BM Lions fans must have hated how a good showing the week before and then that yesterday!

This was a typical Roos coached side.

Lions kicked four goals

Think about that before we start hand wringing.

The boys are learning all the time.

Jr I think a little further examination will show they kicked worse than us.

You give our defence way too much credit.

Upon further examination I can reveal we both kicked 12 points.

So we are as bad as them! it does not alter the fact that a little more accuracy by the lions and it may have been a different ball game.

We are far from a good side yet ET. Improved on last year but far from good.

Couldn't agree more.

Lucky we dominated for half a quarter. A decent/good team would have continued that dominance and buried the opposition.

Loved Harmes after the hit from lions player in the 3rd it was hard he was hurt but straight up and in . They were gathering momentum and he stood up like many did .

ANB looked like he couldn't find top gear and was a step off his usual pace .

What are you saying? He didn't play for the free like Robinson.

IIRC you didn't buy that argument when we lost to Essendon.

You don't get it both ways. If we were lucky to beat Brisbane because of inaccuracy then we were unlucky to lose to Essendon, and we're still 1-1 over the two games.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
