Just in case you missed it.... clubs now free to trade future draft picks.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-commission-trading-future-draft-picks-20150728-gimgzk.html

Interesting to see how clubs may assess what that future pick may actually be worth. Might also help if the club doesn't want to offer up two early picks in the same draft.

Adds another element to future season support as Should the MFC trade its first 2016 pick to GWS for a player, GWS will have a view on where the MFC will finish (i.e. the value of this first pick), and will be hoping we finish as low as possible, and suffering if we were to bounce up the ladder (reducing the value of their pick).

Whole new dimension of strategy required by all clubs in order to manage and profit from this new element.

Fascinating. I wonder if Roos had an inkling this rule would be passed for this year? Is this how he intends to get this A+er into the club? I'd use our 2016 first rounder for Prestia if we really like someone in the draft this year.

Not with protected picks.

Picks will likely be top 5 or top 10 protected, more often than not.

Bringing Prestia and Weideman onto the list, for instance, would be a great boon for the club.

It will be interesting to see the rules of future pick trades.

Can you simply trade for picks?

Eg. Hawks think they are travelling very well, they trade their first and second round pick this year to Port for their first two picks next year.

That would give Port a good influx of talent now when they need it and then Hawks would have 4 early picks next year.

I know that next years talent is suppose to be better. I'm just using this as a potential scenario.

Yes the article wasn't exactly clear about a few details. It appears there are certain safeguards for clubs trading away all their next years early picks - but isn't clear on whether a club can trade both its first round picks in the same trade period. It certainly introduces a further dimension of risk into the trade - but chance favours the prepared and I feel my confidence in our recruiting team now is a lot more justified than it has been in the past.

I just had a look, you're right.

Out of interest, what did you think of Garland's performance today?

I'd absolutely re-sign Garland. He's an important for us.

Howe? There seems to be a gap between his view of his worth to the team, and his actual worth to the team. Suspect he has a greedy manager who's giving him bad advice.

Would trade him for a first round pick or a really decent midfielder, but nothing less.

I'd absolutely re-sign Garland. He's an important for us.

Yes but why do you see him as important?

I asked how you think he played on the weekend?

Why do you think he's more important to hold onto when compared to someone like Frawley? Regardless of the different levels of compo.

What is he actually contributing as far as positive change goes for the club?

Umm I think you need to re read the thread.

It was my comment and I just added "and a war dance".

Did it not take place?

I just add it to the stat's listed.

Butter wouldn't melt in your mouth, old dee.

Interesting article or eos player moves: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-07-30/staying-or-going-this-years-afl-exchange-period-previewed?utm_medium=RSS

Regarding Howe:
"The high-flying utility has put off contract talks with the Demons...and his future remains clouded...a number of other clubs are believed to be monitoring him carefully. Industry sources suggest Howe could attract rival offers of up to $600,000 a season, which Melbourne is unlikely to match."

Another indication that he is Gone!

As an aside, notice the ridiculously low figures for Motlop $500+k and Suckling $400k.

Would take either in a heartbeat.

If other clubs were actually monitoring him they'd realise he isn't worth $600k.

If other clubs were actually monitoring him they'd realise he isn't worth $600k.

Reason he is worth more then suckling and motlop is because he is a good utility. Supply and demand comes into play and their are always alot more midfielders on the market then their are decent utilities who can play both forward and back.

I find it amazing that someone can get $600k per year over several years for arguably being an average sportsperson in the level they play. I understand it's the nature of the competition, supply and demand, they train hard, put their bodies on the line and yadda, yadda, yadda.... But seriously, $600k p/a, that's a shiteload of dosh! Has the competition grown too big too fast, is there too much money involved, are we expecting too much from young men? I shake my head every time I read of the money involved and wonder if we've created a monster (queue Frankenstein gif from Song).

Sorry, rant over.

I wouldn't get too excited about players wages......The money that players get is unknown except for the player, the club, the player manager

All monies quoted in the media are complete guesswork unless you have a peek at their group certificate.

Just all media hype

Wouldn't pay anywhere near 600k for Howe. 500k for Motlop however..

So again, why is Jeremy Howe worth more?

Id be offering a truckload of cash to treloar

You're correct of course Boss, $600k might or might not be what the offer is, and we'll never know exactly. However due to the ever increasing SC, there must be a number of average AFL footballers earning around that mark, which was part of the point I was making

I think that is absolutely crazy. This guy was AA a few weeks ago, so we know he can play.

And Oscar says hello .

While I don't think we would trade Tommy, WTF has Oscar got to do with any of this, Redleg?

Far from some of your best work.

Any word on whether we have?

It's a bit ominous at the moment. Apparently Collingwood and North are frontrunners. Haven't heard anything about the Dees yet.

Don't mind that though, you never know what we're planning. The Tyson trade came out of nowhere, so something like that could happen again this season. Fingers crossed.

  • GAMEDAY: Richmond

It's Game Day and the Demons return to the MCG to face the Tigers in their annual Blockbuster on ANZAC Eve for the 10th time. The Dees will be desperate to reignite their stuttering 2025 campaign and claim just their second win of the season. Can the Demons dig deep and find that ANZAC Spirit to snatch back to back wins?

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
