Our last quality win ...

Under Bailey we knocked off a couple - the usual FIFO outfits. Saw big wins against Freo and Adelaide then we'd get walloped by the same margin against a Hawthorn or Geelong. Swans' coach Roos suffered biggest loss ever against Melbourne.

Dim dark days of Neeld, can only recall the night Essendon win in the wet - not the televised pre-match address game.

Ninthmond and Carlton don't count - or expansion sides.

Flash in pan results.

So I'm thinking - when was the last time we beat a real top 8 side?

Reckon it was QB 2007. And that was after losing the first seven straight.

Typically, Daniher finished two weeks later.

Currently working ouuta Vung Tau - but I'm in town Round 5.

Have Freo, Swans and Hawks next three.

I'll see the first two.

Awesome if we could grab just one.

I think the last 'quality' win. Adelaide in Adelaide last year.

The umps were ALL over us, it was a joke. Given our psychological problems (in regards to dropping our heads, culture related issues, etc), I thought that was a good win.

Last nights win is up with that. Last night we have structure, and it looks like we have a lot to work with.

Richmond have issues, they don't have much of a game plan, they don't play to structures, nor do they have the right personal to take them into the 4.

My suggestion to Richmond would be Bomber Thompson - or Shaun Hart.

Yeah Adelaide oval win one for the ages. Were they top 4 previous year? And it was first win there since Schwarz/Leoncelli combo.

Other than Crows match reckon we'd have to go back to Danihera to recall last win against top 1 to 6 side. Technically I'm guessing it was the St Kilda final.

Nine years.

Well, what is a "quality" win? A four-quarter effort against a quality side?

Adelaide last year is probably a quality win. They were terribly coached and didn't make the 8 but you can't deny their talent. It was a great, consistent opponent.

We haven't beaten Hawthorn, Geelong or North since 2005/2006. We haven't won in Perth for 10+ years. Can't win in Geelong, can't win at Etihad.

Since 2007, are only other "quality" win was probably Collingwood on QB 2007. We haven't beaten them since.

We will push Geelong, Hawthorn, North, Collingwood this year. We will win at Etihad.

The quality wins are coming.

Essendon victories are the sweetest - ask anyone who ever stood at Windy Hill. Found Vic Park a picnic after that.

In Matthews last year at Brisbane we effectively put them out of the 8 - late in the season. Coupla late goals to Cam Bruce and Brad Miller from memory.

Context of my query is when did we beat top four side - really rated? We could have had a win against a Richmond or Footscray at some early season stage where they have been flukely sitting fourth.

Next three weeks gives us chance to reclaim some real ground.

Last years win against Adelaide was probably the last one that had me really excited. Our other wins were against teams I expected us to beat or teams that we'd beaten in recent years, but the Adelaide one just came out of nowhere.

I think we will win one of the next three, as hard as it is to imagine happening.

Just having a quick look at our recent wins (it doesn't take long), it appears our last win over a side who finished the year in the top 4 was when we beat Fremantle in Round 7, 2006.

We did beat Collingwood on QB in 2007, who went on to make the Preliminary final and lost by just 5 points to Geelong.

I have the whole game. I must upload it to youtube

Younger supporters have no idea what a feral suburban AFL ground was like

Windy Hill was the worst i always thought

A most beautiful day.

Beating Hawthorn twice in 2 weeks cost us a flag. But i am always very proud of that 1990 side.

They were tough.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
