The player rankings are total rubbish. No account for current form.

Looking at competitions statistics and averages provide a better base, but at the end of the day they're still statistics and statistics can only say so much.

Rankings are carried over. So if your #1 player but in your first year playing then you won't be ranked #1. 

longer your career the more it helps your rank 

The rankings are based off an accumulative points total that takes into account the player's last 40 games. Hence why players like Hogan who have played less than 40 games are rated so low.

Still, a rubbish system that should have no bearing on these sorts of arguments.

I think it's because it's based on the past 2 years worth of performances. Gawn has only really played the last 3/4 of a season (since mid last year) and Hogan only started last year too.

Yeah i think all things considered its actually not that bad for long term performance. Its better than flat out stats. However i would like an option to limit it to just this year and see how it looks because i think we would have a few more than in the top 100

If you want reasonably credible rankings for player from just this year, there's a few options to consider.

Inside Football's http://www.aflplayerratings.com.au/

The coaches association votes appear on the AFL website after every round.

You can also just run with champion data, and sort by supercoach points by position (probably easiest using footywire)

None are ideal, but all are better than the 'Official AFL Player ratings brought to you by schmuck'

 

On the Couch boys saying that Hogan could be worth $15m over 10 years to another club. Sounds like a lot to me.

They did also say Melbourne wouldn't have to pay that as "why would you leave the Demons, they are on their way up"

Well, as fndee said, we wouldn't have to offer him that. $1-1.5mill a year over ten years sounds right to me. With the rising cap I'd happily pay that for Jesse.

Brown threw out the figure of $1m a season for Melbourne to keep him.

Healy hosed it all down saying he won't leave and Brown basically agreed.

Hogan is going to get and deserve big coin, i believe he's struggled in 5 of 7 games this year and still already has nearly 20 goals. another 2-3 years and he'll be tearing this comp a new one. 

if it takes 15 mil over 10 years to keep him where do i sign?

 

I hope it is not going to be another Scully situation and Hogan next year says he will make a decision at the end of 2017. That signifies he is going. I have every faith in Glen Bartlett, Peter Jackson and Simon Goodwin convincing him to stay and Paul Roos will have a big input too. Why would you leave when we are on the up and Freo are on the downhill slope except, and I understand that,  if Freo offers $1.5 mill a year for 10 years and his family is in Perth. I think Hogan would want to have success with his mates and if he were to sign on for 5 years only, that would still be a great result. Scully leaving was at a time when were no hopers and that is far from the case now. A serious chance at a premiership beckons in 3 to 4 years if we develop the way we should. Anyway the focus is on 2016 and while i am posting here in response to what Brown said tonight, perhaps we just forget talking about it till it becomes more relevant next year.

That is 15% of the cap in 2016.

In 2018, the first year of that hypothetical deal, that number might be down to near 10%, and the value will only improve over the life of that deal.

I don't know what deal is being presented but if Hogan is asking for THAT much, we should be asking for THAT long to do that deal.

Exactly, even when down he still impacts the game and provides a target for us upfield.  The only "poor" game he's had was against the Bombers, every other game he's played his role while threatening to explode at any moment. The less focus on him the better as far as team balance goes but even when not spearheading the side he remains the linchpin of the team. Will be a dominant CHF for the next decade, hopefully the Weed comes on as a full forward with Watts as the roaming 3rd tall and Garlett/Kent/Petracca crumbing to really cause headaches for opposition defences for years to come.

Pretty much, he's having what i'd consider second year blues and still matching or beating nearly every young key forward in the comp besides Tom Lynch, and he is good enough to be as good or better than him before this year is out if he gets his best footy going

Even if money is a driving factor he could sign on next year for 3 years and hopefully (hopefully ) have a crack at a flag with us ...and then in his mid to late 20s sign a big money deal like buddy going back to WA. Whilst retaining hoges is a priority we will have to face into eventually satisfying the likes of clarry,  ANB and trac in the coming years among others like Viney and Co as well ...think we need a geelong style brotherhood pact and keep this group together 

Other than that we can say look hoges you're free to leave anytime you like ...you just have to get past young jack Viney at the door ...hotel California,  check out any time you like but you can never leave

Obviously overwhelming preference is to keep Jesse, but if he does go imo the opening of negotiations for a trade would be 2 top 10 draft picks and god knows where it would end up, so we'd be well compensated

Plus we have Weiderman coming through who is a very good talent.

I just don't understand this attitude.  Hogan is incredibly important if you want to develop a premiership team.  The last thing we can afford is to lose Hogan.  Nothing would come close to compensating us.

The ambivalence of some to Hogan and his importance astonishes me.  With the midfield we're developing I've never been more confident of seeing my first flag in the next decade.  Hogan is a pivotal cog in that ambition.

Couldn't agree more.  We've been waiting for a guy like Hogan since the day Neitz retired, and when we have him, some will barely kick up a fuss if he leaves.  Madness.

lol I am picturing Viney with Hogan in some sort of pressure-point sleephold, in a windowless room in the bowels of the MCG, and Goodwin with a pen and a contract

agree 100% also. It's scary how a couple of wins turns to immediate arrogance for some. Hogan is the most valuable player in the comp bar none. FFS he just kicked 7 like it was nothing in his 26th game of footy, and I wouldn't even say he is in great form at the moment. He will be absolutely pivotal in a flag tilt for the team that has him and it bloody well better be us

I i will put my fist through a glass window if he leaves this year or next. He has potentially to be the first ever melbourne player to kick 100 goals a year and i want to witness that when he is wearing red and blue.

Do everything in its power to keep him. Offer him whatever it takes.
