The main reason the final recruitment strategy hasn't been a main feature across Roos' tenure is because the MFC itself hasn't represented any value to the outside footballing community. Instead, we've decided to identify which players were worth keeping and building a side around. All the while, this enabled us to finish lower on the ladder and stockpile draft picks. Our defensive mindset was never going to win us a lot of games, but the scoreline was usually respectable.

Roos and co have basically performed a stealth rebuild and 'list management' strategy across three years, but done it very cleverly. Freo are doing vaguely similar things, playing an outdated brand of football that will see they don't get blown off the park every week, but also won't win most games.

But returning to my original point, we are now in a position to attract quality players and Dion is one of them.

I've had the same thoughts, AF. Carefully planned, beautifully executed and well masked (in a playing on your merits type sense).

Thanks for articulating it in a concise manner.

We will not be trading much if any for Prestia. If anyone has to be traded it'll be a player from previous era. We are legitimate club now and hold the power.

Roos has rewarded almost everyone who has bought in and wont trade out any young players.

It's not up to Roos.

I wouldn't be so sure, i think it would take a pretty special offer but i doubt they'd be totally untouchable, for example would you trade Christian Salem for Dion Prestia if there was no other option to land Dion?

Yep and I'm a Salem fan.

Players like ANB, Salem, Kent, Brayshaw ect will need to come into consideration to land Prestia.

Unfortunately Terlich and JKH won't land you much

Both Hurley or Prestia require a first rounder. We don't have one and nor do we necessarily want to trade one of our promising youngsters. Other than two second rounders which might not get it done, I'm interested to know how we think this can work.

Well, as i have suggested before... we get Hurley with one of the first rounders we get for Hogan, and Prestia with the other.

Why on earth would we waste our time going for Hurley this year when he's a free agent next year? Common sense people.

In the event that another club trades for Hurley this year, a new contract would be put in place and this would end the possibility of him becoming a free agent under the current rules for seven years.

Lets be clear.

If Dion chooses us as his preferred destination, he will end up a Dee.

You can never have too many A Graders.  Those who say we have too many players of his ilk are being naive.  How many midfield A Graders has Hawthorn had in the last 5 years? Many of them have had to play in alternative positions, but the key to their success is firstly recruiting them and secondly having them play their role which may only be periodically and briefly through the midfield.

I have no idea what we will have to give up for Dion, but once a player declares a destination, the destination club is in a position of power. The departing club has rarely received market value, particularly since free agency. The acquiring club has almost never failed to sign their man once preferred destination is declared.

My understanding is Dion will choose us. Hogan will re-sign along with McDonald.  We are unlikely to lose regular 22 by choice.

As I have previously said, I will retire GNF if I am wrong.  This is the firm belief of our club.

I. Love. This. Post.

Unfortunately i think you might be right, however i think it will be 2017 first rounder and a fringe player, i can't see the club being willing to move on Salem, Kent or Brayshaw

This will sound like the 'Judd's Grandmother' days, but he's 100% moving back to Melbourne to be closer to family and has informed GC. Unfortunately he's tossing up between Tigers and Kangas. Guessing money is a key factor, but not sure. Perhaps inside mid isn't one of our key priorities and with his injury history we're focusing our attention elsewhere?

Source - his sister

Live everyone else I appreciate access to the inside information shared on this site and I would never question the source and ask someone to break confidentiality.

So I am interested, other than DP being happy to have his current thinking out in the public domain, why would you reveal the source of extremely confidential information.

Yes they will, we're on Demonland after all.  Straight swap - Terlich for Prestia and JKH for Hurley.  If anything that's paying overs.

And this is why people are kidding themselves in thinking we don't need Prestia in our midfield.

He adds class, grunt and extra midfield quality

I don't think anyone would disagree that Prestia would be in our best team and a good contributor.

The argument that people keep ignoring is the cost. Both in terms of getting a trade done and salary cap space.

What are you prepared to give up for him?

I, like many others, think there are many more pressing needs and unless we were getting an amazing deal, I cant see why he would be a priority.

You can, just need to use 2 first rounders every 4 years (90% confident on the 2nd part).

Better than the 50% certainty of AFL rules and decision making

Without a decent midfield the rest of the team doesn't matter...

Without Oliver, Viney was hard-tagged leaving Jones (at best) a B+ grader as our best mid. We're going nowhere with that.

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session.
