FAREWELL JEREMY HOWE

What

Surely we should, now that C'Wood are getting him, be looking to prise their pick 7 from them. If we hold 6+7 that can make something big happen. Now, clearly 7 for Howe is fanciful - so in order to make it happen we need to either a) sweeten it for C'Wood with the use of another pick/player (unfortunately we only have pick43 to play with due to the Melksham trade) OR b) it needs to be a trade that involves a 3rd party. That HAS to be our goal at this point. THEN the question is, what do we do with 6+7? Just because it's not on the radar at the moment, doesn't mean it can't just spring out of nowhere like the trades that got us Vince, Tyson and Clark. I refuse to give up just yet that they aren't brewing something special in the caulron.

I agree in principle, but their first rounder for both years is basically on it's way to GWS for Treloar. So that doesn't leave us much wiggle room in getting something good in return for Howe unless we can pry one of their players loose.

Love how Collingwood go after the big guns then they're like oh no, we have no good pics to trade anymore, our only currency is our rejects, you'll have to do a deal for them.. I see right through them!

Wise I've told you the answer, if we can get it done.

Howe to Pies.

Seedsman and Freeman and Toumpas picks to Dees. ( 3 second rounders.) If Anderson is worth 15, then Howe is worth 2 middle second rounders at least.

Kennedy thrown in to us, or for late pick.

Our 3 picks from above deals to GWS for 8, plus because we have well over 200 point difference, which the AFL won't allow, they throw in Bugg and maybe Tomlinson. Maybe we add a late pick.

We offer 6 and 8 to GC for 3 and Prestia. If needed, we add something like a player or pick that might come from another trade, like say Grimes somewhere.

The above would be easier to do as they can be isolated deals. Toumpas single deal. Howe for 2 picks single deal. GWS picks for pick single deal. GC single deal.

If we end up with 8 and can't do the Prestia deal, we go to draft with 6 and 8.

Anyone got anything better and easier to achieve.

I like your optimism however this is J Mahoney we talking about. He takes 4 days to do a straight pick of Melksham for pick 25.

The above scenario would mean he needs to increase his output by at least 5-6 fold to achieve with everything working in our favour.

Love the scenario and optimism but J Mahoney is not capable of delivering.

I'd like something a little closer to 20. Then offload Toumpas to Port for a second rounder. Then package those picks up and make an approach to GWS for pick 8.

Pick 20 and 29 for pick 8 will get trumped by Essendon.

Just thinking out loud here. So Seedsman is a pick 32 from Crows? What will St.Kilda give to get Freeman? They will have to shake loose a 2nd rounder out of Essendon in the Carlisle trade or give up their current second rounder to Collingwood for Freeman so that Collingwood will to be able to give us two 2nd round picks.

MFC would recieve pick 29 from Port for Toumpas & pick 26 from Collingwood for Howe. Collingwood then on trade the Seedsman pick 32 to us. I don't see how we are going to pay for Kennedy if Collingwood want a second rounder for him other than letting them keep pick 32. If they keep 32 we won't have the currency to beat other teams in a trade with GWS.

You believe Collingwood will give up two second rounders for Howe & give us Kennedy? It could work but a lot of Clubs are going to have to work together to make it work. Once one club digs their heels in the deal would be dead. I don't see how any of these hypotheticals are going to help us as Collingwood are trading for Treloar & Aish & they will have no picks left to give us anything of note for Howe if those deals go through. We are better off telling Collingwood at the moment you have nothing to give us that helps out position, we are only open to a trade for Howe when you can give us X that you can trade to us to help us get pick 8 out of GWS. Until then we are doing the deal with GC.

I think the original plan was to try get involved with the Dixon trade by involving Toumpas, Howe & pick 6 to help satisfy Port & GC. If we deal with Collingwood as it stands it is going to be hard to get all the picks to trade for pick 8 out of GWS. If Collingwood short change us we wont have any currency to do a deal with GC for the original plan. If that happens then there is no point doing any deal with Collingwood as we would be coming out behind from when we entered the trade period.

It will be Howe and pick 43 for Kennedy and pick 27.

Collingwood will dictate the terms on this one.

Was mentioned in The Age this morning it could be two 2nd rounders.

Now even if those 2nd round picks for Howe were 29 (Port) & 32 (Crows), it's still more points combined then Sydney's Pick 14. They will also want to get points for Mills & Dunkley.

6 & 14 could still get us 3 & 35 from Gold Coast which is what we were trying to get with the Howe trade anyway.

They will have 7 and 8 after the Treloar deal and have two academy kids lined up that have 1st round potential

I understand this but after Carlisle trade, Essendon will have picks 15 18/23 and 25 to trump us for pick 8. We won't have 2 picks better then 15 and 18.

That is why is would more likely be us giving pick 6, stk 2nd (freeman), pie's 2nd and for bugg, 7 and 8. Essendon won't give up their first rounder in the trade.

The beauty is that the gws pick will be used on an academy player which we wouldn't be able to select anyway...so in essence pick 7 in this scenario has the same 'value to the dees pick 6.

I think 15/18 is way overs for either of 7 or 8. Don't think they would do that to be honest, they will most likely end up with one of those top 10 picks but not both in my opinion.

Your not wrong, but there's every chance that trade wont happen at all and if it does it could be well into the last hour making it a race against time.

If our Howe trade is done by Monday/Tuesday, then we can give them some certantity with any trade.

That is but they have far greater flexibility to get the trade down. Pick 15 and 25 maybe? Or 18/23? They can mix and match to what works to beat us for the pick

This is the AFL site's latest prediction for us. If true, the above is on target.

WHAT'S DONE

In: Jake Melksham

Out: Pick No.25

STILL TO COME

Big-ticket item: The Demons would prefer to deal with Gold Coast on Jeremy Howe, with the Suns prepared to swap pick No.3 for the Dees' No.6 as part of the deal. However, they will almost certainly end up trading with Howe's preferred club, Collingwood, who could offer Ben Kennedy and a second-round pick, or two second-round picks.

What else is on the shopping list: The Demons are likely to pick up Giants midfielder Tom Bugg, but could lose 2012's No.4 draft pick Jimmy Toumpas to Port Adelaide in exchange for a second-round selection.

Kennedy & two second rounders for Toumpas & Howe is a good outcome. It gives us room to move on Bugg and create another deal for Gold Coast's pick 3.

If we could trade our second rounders for GWS pick 8 (big if, as every other club will be doing the same) we could then trade 6 + 8 for 3 + 19 + 43. That leaves us 3 & 19 for the draft (Parish + best available), 43 for Bugg and 46 for Rosa. Upgrade VDB + Harmes with 100 + 118 and rookie Lovett.

I get the feeling Howe would have been the sticking point of any deal involving pick 3. Can't see any combinations of picks satisfying their needs.

Basing this on Mahoney's reaction to Howe choosing Collingwood and also looking at the deal from GC's perspective. Howe would have been a great fit for them.

Now the Freeman deal with St Kilda & Collingwodd is probably holding up any Howe deal, and that is being held up by St Kilda & Essendon's Carlisle deal.

We'll be waiting a few days on this one.

Wont have to wait too long, trade period ends Thursday.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started.
