Melbourne Cricket Club elects new president

Mar 04, 2015

Steven_Smith_200.jpgMelbourne Cricket Club (MCC) is delighted to announce that former Melbourne footballer and experienced lawyer Steven Smith has been elected as the 27th MCC president, succeeding Paul Sheahan when his term expires in April.

An MCC member since 1981, Steven has been a member of the MCC Committee since 1998 and a vice-president for the past four years.

He is presently chairman of the Club Sub-committee and is also a director of the MCC Foundation and National Sports Museum Ltd.

Steven was a key defender with Melbourne Football Club, playing 203 games for the Demons between 1974 and 1985. He was the club’s best and fairest winner in 1981. He was also a director of the club from 1990 to 1992.

He is a partner at law firm HWL Ebsworth, with more than 30 years’ experience acting for a wide range of property and commercial clients. Steven is also a board member of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art.

During his time on the MCC Committee, the club has rebuilt the Members Reserve, significantly grown its membership base, built and operated the National Sports Museum, taken on management of Yarra Park and, in 2015, will complete a major technology upgrade of the MCG to enhance the visitor experience.

Steven also played an important role in the establishment of the Australia Post Avenue of Legends in Yarra Park, which presently displays statues in honour of Shane Warne, Norm Smith, John Coleman, Neil Harvey and Jim Stynes and he is heading up the sub-committee which is looking at how best to deal with the ever-growing waiting list for membership of the club.

“I'm extremely proud and excited to be the next president of our great club,” said Steven.

“On behalf of our members and the committee, I pay tribute to Paul Sheahan, not only for the outstanding contribution he has made as president over the past four years, but also during his 22 years of service as a committeeman of the club.”

Good or bad news?

Hopefully means more benefits for us.

Smithy is a demon true blue. I see him at all the MFC games and he wrote a beautiful eulogy for Robbie Flower. He has been the MFC delegate to the MCC in the past so this can only be good for the club. It is customary for the MCC president to attend the Ashes so I suspect he will miss a few games mid July. I ran into Smithy in 2013 at Lords as a guest of the other MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) and saw the out going president Paul Sheahan also there.

Every time I have been to the footy (the Melb matches at the G) he has been there. That has to be a good thing.

Used to work with Stepehen at HWLE a couple of years ago. Super smart guy and an excellent lawyer. Will be good for the club as he is still passionate about the Dees.

I note the release says Steven was a key defender with the Melbourne Football Club. I though he played CHF. Can anyone confirm?

And my apologies for mis-spelling his name (Steven v Stephen) in the Topic title. I'd fix it if I knew how.

Great news. Smithy is a top bloke and a good melbourne man.

Can only be of benefit for the Dees although he would be limited in what he can do for us I am guessing.....

what's his Demonland name?

And, he's fronting up with the bat for Australia in Perth today! Very versatile chap!

Oh! Wrong Steve Smith? Sorry!

Never forget that mark of the century.

Jees ,he has filled out.

Great News. A passionate Demon at the head of the MCC

As it should be.

Smithy call a boycott on Essendon playing at the MCG on ANZAC Day.

The mere thought of it makes me very angry....

Very handy player and red and blue to his core. Can't hurt.

Has he got any sons that can play?

Smithy came to Melbourne from Ormond amateurs as a CHF and played his early days there. He had a lot of hamstring problems and I believe that led to his move down back where there was less twisting and turning. Turned into a great full back

That is unequivocally good news.

A true Demon who stood by us in tough times.

Had his jaw broken behind play by the thug Mathews.

A loyal servant of the club as they say and to this day I see him at every MCG game.

This can only be good for us.

I like that we are getting old ties back at the club. In recent times, Viney, Stretch, Lovett.

That is what football clubs are all about, family, friends and loyalty.

To go with the blazers.

Shaun not Steve.

But I know your joking.

Also played for the Dees in the little league.

When he walked around the CHF before the bounce he thrust out his chest and looked a lot like superman.

But played more like Lois Lane.

Best and Fairest in 1981.

The first year under Barassi

I reckon that was the worst credentialed Melbourne Side I have witnessed

Congrats Steve, from your old mate and the guy who moved your admission to the Legal profession.

Steve was a superb full back and is a very Passionate Demon who attends most games, this will only be good for our club.

On a side note Steve used to go out with Judy Green who was a penthouse pet and side kick of Alby Mangels.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
