Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Take Georgiou and Clisby for example only 1 & 2 years on the list, under the previous leadership i suspect these two would still be on the list but under the current leadership these two are done.

We still have many players who were drafted from 2007-2011 who could be turned over Spencer, Mckenzie, Fitzpatrick these guys haven't had much success in their careers and wouldn't get games with other clubs.

If Max King, James Harmes, Jayden Hunt don't show that they are going to make it this year I wouldn't be suprised to see them gone also.

The current leadership is making harsh but better decisions than previous leadership which is causing stability not instability.

At the end of the year turned over players might be

Cross retired

Spencer

Fitzpatrick

Mckenzie

Terlich

Harmes

Hunt

King

I don't think any of these guys are really going to be good AFL players and the current leadership is making the right decisions.

I wouldn't write off Hunt just yet 'H', he was taken as a project player and has a lot to offer. I reckon he will get 3 years to show something.

edit: right it's write stupid. To early for me....

Agree, they will know if they've seen enough to persist with. It seems we have held on to some in the past for too long.

Hunt has something we seriously lack and that's electrifying speed, King has something all our ruckman lack and that's quality kicking skills and Harmes is another inside midfielder that has shown at VFL level he can win big numbers of the ball.

Surely if the club can put over 7 years into Spencer for not much return surely it wouldn't hurt to give guys like King and Hunt who both have good AFL attributes a couple of years more development..

If Hunt and Harmes can get a game ahead of Newton and Michie, Brayshaw etc then they deserve a spot on the list, if they have solid years at Casey then they deserve a spot on the list, we will know at the end of the year.

While im not that out I would be very very shocked and surprise if Harmes and Hunt were getting games ahead of these two.

I wouldn't write off Cross. If he has another year like last year there is no reason for him not to go on, he's a proven player and should be backed in.

The rest have to do something or they will more than likely be out the door.

Pedersen, Bail and M.Jones are all out of contract aren't they? They should be playing for their careers every year and if they are spending more time at Casey they could be given the flick\traded.

How long can Grimes, Watts and Garland continue to tread water before they are traded? In Garland's case he could just walk out.

I think it could be another big clean out at the end of the year.

I think another big clean out is a good thing for the club, someone suggested it might not be done under the current leadership, but I think the current leadership are prepared to make big changes. Pederson, Bail, M Jones, Grimes, Watts and Garland seem to be players that half of us think deserve their spot on the list and there other half of us don't. I wouldn't be suprised to see Garland move on, but his experience is what splits him from our other defenders, having lost Frawley and Rivers. Big year ahead for all of them.

M. Jones is contracted until the end of 2016, and if you have been following the training reports, Pedersen and Garland seem set for a good year. When we haven't even played a NAB Challenge game yet, it is far too early to be predicting the list management scenario at year's end. The only certainty is that we will have to turn over at least three players before the draft.

Nah it's not to early to predict the list management, heaps of people say if Watts doesn't step up this year we should cut him loose, there are heaps of others in the same boat as Watts.

That is the trouble when you are the number one draft pick you have to step up more than others. Many bemoan us taking Watts over Nic Nat however both performed similarly in last year's B&F for their respective Clubs. Natanui was ninth on WC's B&F whilst Jack was tenth on ours. I am confident however that he gets less bagging from WC supporters than Jack cops from Demonlanders

Michie would be my choice to take Bernies place.

Newton has put in a great pre season but is just that inch or so smaller.

Size does matter.

I take your point but if you look at the thread where posters choose their best 22 plenty have Grimes missing a spot. He was captain last year. That's no Blease, Straus or Tappy.

Is this the same Grimes butchering the ball in the intra club? I would offer him up as a trade at years end. Being captain means nothing, he never should been appointed to start with. I honestly hope he was pushed out of the role because this means Roos has the balls to made the hard calls that many before him have failed to make. 25 years old and close to 90 games yet can't kick a football. If we are to be successful there is no more room for good blokes or clubman who can't play the game. Edited by Al's Demons

Grimes is a leader at the club for a reason.

He is actually a leader.

I am always absolutely impressed whenever he speaks, especially for someone so young.

A quality individual. And, prior to the Neeld period, a really good player too - something here several people seem to forget/overlook.

He's in our best 22.

Grimes is employed as a footballer, something he struggles at. All we have heard lately is his game has been affected due to the pressures of being made captain. Throughout the preseason training report all we heard was how his kicking has improved significantly yet come the intra club practice match he has resorted back to shanking the ball. He might be a leader but if you can't do what you're asking other people to do your message will soon wear thin. He might be a great bloke and a great speaker if that's the case maybe the public speaking circuit might be better suited for him. If he is in our best 22 we are in trouble.

There's a back six that works for me. He can't play midfield and for the people naming him on the bench........what a copout.

We finished 17th and will continue to lie at the bottom of the ladder if we continue to carry people who don't have the skill level required to play at the top level. I'm a good bloke and can speak well, doesn't mean that I can play footy. Roos was employed to make the tough decisions and that's what I believe is doing, hence the relinquishing of the captaincy, that was just the beginning.

Well last year I saw JONES,VINCE,TYSON,DUNN all stuff up kicks yet no one says much about it

I get that you don't like GRIMES but I saw that a lot of his kicks are pretty good and only the clangers get mentioned.

Add to that, if you watch a lot of footy you will see that most players stuff up kicks and cause turnovers, even the so called great players

So how about we watch the season unfold before saying he should be dropped/delisted.

Watched the reply and thought id comment on these two.

Newton: Very impressive! His kicking and inside work is something im looking forward to this year and he is already in our best 22. He would have easily had 20 plus possession against freo if he played a full game. Said before i wouldn't be surprised if he had a Dom Tyson/Anthony Miles like year where he takes the competition by storm. Adding him to an already growing midfield of Jones Tyson Viney Vince Brayshaw Toumpas Salem will only make us better.

Michie: Was our leading tackler for our team with 7 so just shows he does alot of grunt work that some didn't notice including me so its good to see he is improving his defensive efforts as that was one weakness in his game. I would much rather him playing in the side then a Grimes Jones or Mckenzie.. still think he has alot to offer and i will continue to watch with great interest over the NAB challangen to see how he goes.

Don't think so Ron

Good on Grimes for being a good speaker. thats lovely. Too bad it means nothing on the footy field and doesn't help his terrible disposal and decision making.

I just wonder if Jack Grimes reads all our posts and its affecting his confidence.

I have always liked him since his early days when he kept having back-related problems.

He was just so reliable and his game against Adelaide last season was a case in point.

But he seems to now be worrying about his disposal - whether he's taking the comments and game pressure too seriously and not just having fun like Kokky I don't know.

But his game against Freo (albeit first up and of a high standard) has me worried.

I also don't feel that he's muscled up like other footballers - perhaps he can't, but it certainly affects his ability to break tackles.

Anyway this post is not about Jack Grimes.

The Michie v Newton decision will probably get down to whether we aim to pick seven forwards (with one the sub) and seven defenders (one always rotating), as this impacts number of midfield options.

I suspect we will have a rotation of 8 mids (includes Jamar/Gawn as one) and if fit, the lucky 7 in my view shape as - N.Jones, Tyson, Viney, Bail, Cross, M.Jones (I'd rather Stretch but it's M.Jones spot to lose) and Newton (a little more mongrel than Viv). Obviously a forward (Garlett) and defender (HarryO or Salem) can be thrown into midfield every now and then to help with rotations.

But injuries may yet be a factor and don't get too settled on a line-up yet.

The Newton/Michie thing is good either way. Puts pressure on all the midfield to win their positions each week. Throw in Brayshaw and the Van and we have better options now.

Michie is an interesting one. Hardly rated a mention in the post match, but ended up with the most tackles and 4th most possessions. Seems a meat and potatoes type. Lacks penetration with his kicking but Sam Mitchell has the same issue and has carved out a decent career.

Newts looks very capable of being our Anthony Miles this season. Really exciting signs against Freo.

At this stage there surely wouldn't be too many complaints seeing both named for Round 1.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
