AFL injury update

We have 9 players who in my opinion would be in our best 18 on the injury list.

I have included Petracca as a best 18 - lets face it if fit he would be in!

Most clubs have 5 or 6 with some having only 2 or 3. A quick glance shows the struggling teams seem to have the most. The Swans look blessed. Freo ok. Even the Hawks can't squawk to much. Two number 2 draft picks out for the year for us!

All considering we have probably the worst run of the lot!

Not looking for excuses just pointing out the facts.

The lack of depth beyond our best 22 is on full display... once we get some of those guys back though we should win some more games.

Might be an unpopular opinion, but to me he's the most significant loss of those currently out for an extended period. The whole dynamic of our forward line has changed since his injury, and we've suffered as a consequence.

For a team with as little inside-50's as us, forward-line retention is pivotal, and without his pressure, our scoring and general play has dropped right off.

No, I'm not suggesting he's the entire reason for this, but as HH mentions, his impact is underrated by many.

Been saying this since last year, with many posters shutting me down saying that "he can't run defensively etc. blah blah blah", well his hardcore tackling, rough stuff and attack both on the ball and the man this year showed that his defence is another form of attack!

Kent and Viney were set for big break out seasons. Extended time out robs them of development/continuity etc.

The reality is that injuries do matter when they reach a certain tipping point of 1st 18's. It helps when you have a relatively stable and relatively healthy 1st 18. Its an advantage if you are playing a team that has more 1st 18s' injured than you have. But things can change quickly and it also depends on the severity of injuries. A say 6 - 10 week injury robs a players of fitness, form etc whereas short term injuries generally have less self and team impact.

They've misinterpreted what Dave Misson has said about Kent. He has already had 3 weeks since his injury. The INITIAL assessment was 8-10 weeks and they are sticking with that even though he is progressing really well so we could hope to have him back in 5 weeks at best (not 8-10 weeks as the AFL site are quoting). I suspect he will be back after the bye.

Perhaps MFCSS speaking, but it seemed the only players on our list outside of Tmac to have shown some positive signs of individual improvement so far this year were Viney (426), Salem (426) and Kent (?).

He's no world beater but we're desperately lacking someone that can play on the enormous forwards (Tippett, Hale) and pinch hit in the ruck.

Sounds like excuses to me. We really only have three or four important players out that are in our top 12 players. There are several clubs worse off that are missing key players. North, WC, GC etc

what if T Mac, Jones etc were injured?

Jt dropped last year, Tracca could be anything but hasnt played a game so you cannot say he is best 22

Our list is a work in progress and unfortunately is one of the worst in the league. We need every player to be available. I would argue taking Kent, Viney, Salem ( after his hammy) and Hogan out of our team is more significant than a team like Hawthorn who can lose champions like Hodge and Lewis, and then Lake and number one ruck in McEvoy and not even miss a beat. It's not an excuse - it's a sad reality.

A fit Trenners would walk into our best 22. Before his chronic injuries took hold he was one of our most consistent players. Good tackler and a good decision maker by foot.

Kent was starting to look like a beast. His power and speed is what we are seriously missing. Put that with Vineys toughness and smarts and it does leave a big hole in our lineup.

Frost fractured his big toe. This type of injury has a major risk of recurrence if not treated correctly. Should there be a recurrence, the risk of the injury becoming chronic is extreme.

The club is doing the correct thing in treating this injury very cautiously.

They can chase and tackle, but can they chase down someone faster or tackle someone stronger? I think that's the issue. The idea that they can't be bothered doesn't hold water for me.

Almost got a handy spine there, as well as a bit of run out of the backline, a good goal sneak, and a bit of grunt around the ball.

I reckon the injury list could well challenge the "fit" list at present!

Toes are kind of important. Try running or jumping with a broken toe. It is impossible.

Its a delicate injury that needs time to heal correctly,
