The 2015 fixture thread

Featured Replies

Perfect draw.

Allows us to get a steady march towards finals in 2015.

See you all at the games this year.

Too bad there isnt more dome games on sunday arvo, but you cant ask for everything.

The best thing about this draw is that I actually get to see two games on the trot... down in Melbourne for the opening round against GC and then the following week we play GWS in Sydney.

still cant host a home game against essendon at the G and we are back down at geelong. dam.

But its good we are hosting the saints, dockers and dogs at the G and we get a friday night game even if its an away one. Cant believe we are playing the pies twice but thats ok. Woohoo we only play nth once and its at our ground.

r22 could be interesting. us v gws at etihad. If we are still having a shocker then it may be a first. No one will show up at the game.

We play GWS in Canberra.

Same thing as sydney.Full of spivvs.

i am more likely to get to darwin, alice springs and canberra than i am to go to etihad in round 23.

Stop thinking about the calculator and balance sheet for one second and realise from a footballing point of view it's actually not too bad.

Leave PJ to worry about the commercial side.

I am not paid to have ulcers over the clubs finances - but PJ is. When you suggest that we let PJ worry about the commercial side I will suggest that that is exactly what he is doing after seeing our draw - worrying.

Financially the draw kills us ... "it is reflective of where we are as a club".

Only the traditional QB home game agst a good crowd drawing club at the MCG.

No home games agst Cats, Blues, Bombers, Tigers, Hawks - all 40,000 likely crowd drawers.

Play 7 interstate teams as home games.

Play 3 low drawing Vic clubs Saints, Kangas and Bulldogs as home games.

We will be lucky to break even, despite NT game $$ and Queens Birthday.

Only 2 night games for crowd watching... excl the Darwin game. We are the family club.

Field of Women game in 2015 ??????????

i am more likely to get to darwin, alice springs and canberra than i am to go to etihad in round 23.

What if we were playing for a finals spot??????????????

  • One more game at the MCG
  • One less interstate trip
  • One less game at Etihad
  • A marquee Friday night game
  • Double up games against St. Kilda, Bulldogs and GWS
  • No travel between rounds 15 to 22.
And you guys still think it's the end of the world.

100%

It's a shocker. Only 4 homr games against Victorian clubs (like this year) - Coll, WB, NM and St K. That's Collingwood plus the three worst Victorian clubs. The remainder of our home games are against interstate sides, including GWS at Etihad.

We also go to Geelong and have 4 home games starting at 1.10 on a Sunday (the worst timeslot in terms of interest).

The Richmond Friday night and the Sydney Saturday night are nice, plus we play Collingwood twice this year. But otherwise it's a really awful draw financially. To be expected of course, but nonetheless it's bad.

Return games against GWS, Collingwood, WB, St Kilda and Fremantle. That's OK overall.

Agree with some of this Titan but 4 home games at 110 on a Sunday is brilliant for those of us with young kids. Home at a reasonable hour for tea and bed! Mine are mad keen demons so hopefully we can jag a few wins this year.

Can you jag a few for me too !

Canberra.

Oh [censored] ! Back to another barren period for we fully paid up interstate members.

I resemble that remark! Why you, I oughta!

Just remember where jazza hails from

everyone else looks a spivv to them

Well that sucs the big fat one.

Was looking forward to seeing them play in Qld this yr.

Our Home game opponents;

Gold Coast, Sydney, Fremantle, West Coast, Port, Brisbane and GWS.

St Kilda, North, Footscray.

Collingwood.

We are one change short of having the worst possible fixture for attendance and finances. Just switch in Adelaide for the 'pies.

I'm disappointed in the new AFL executive. They couldn't quite go that final decisive step.

We will be lucky to break 25,000 as a home game average. Under 20,000 is a possibility.

Personally, I've got no doubt this must be a set strategy. You don't do that to a club you want to see becoming financially independent.

Man so much whinging in this thread! You'd swear we supported the Dees on the stock exchange not on the footy field

I, for one want to see footy and want to see wins. The money side is taken care of by the club. 13 games at the G, less twilight rubbish and double shots at poor teams - good draw.

would people prefer playing hawks twice instead of St kilda if it meant more money? I prefer wins. the money will follow

I agree.

The strugglers are teams that we have a decent chance of winning against. I want to see us winning games and I want at least some of those games to be home games (they’re generally the ones I can get to after negotiations with the wife).

If we want home attendances to go up, winning games of football is the best elixir.

I want our fans to turn up because we’re winning.

I’m tired of us relying on opposition crowds to prop up our gate takings because our fans are sick of watching us lose.

I'm not sure anything hurts the bottom line more than being a consistently awful team on field.

ChaserJ other clubs have their attendances propped up by other clubs - how do you think Carlton would go if they had our fixture year in year out?

I don't discount the commercial aspect Doc, it's just that I look at the fixture and my first thought is 'beauty, a few more games we might be able to win'. Dee fans should be turning up to at least these games.

At some point we need a team that can get some results on the board. From an onfield results perspective, we've had what should have been favourable fixtures for at least 3 years running and haven't capitalised. Until we can do that, we aren't going to get a commercially favourable fixture. That's a reality.

If Carlton had our fixture year in year out, they'd still get an extra 10-15 000 to their games because they have more fans that turn up consistently. Plus they haven't stunk it up as often on field for about 7 years. We're into the eighth year of a 5 year rebuild. That said, I think Carlton's list is looking messy at the moment and they are due for a pretty significant drop off.

It may help our draw if we start to WIN some bloody games consistently.

Just a thought

I remember the days before 1987......We were crap

1987 finals I remember seeing a sea of red and blue colours at AFL park and the MCG

Win and as someone famous said, They will come.....

Field of Women game in 2015 ??????????

I believe I heard somewhere due to the high logistics of it and the desire not to dilute the significance they only want to do that once every 2 years or so. I think we'll still have a "pink" game, i think I heard possibly against Sydney. I reckon it should always be against the dogs and build it up with them.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
