    Just in regards to those saying McCartin is only an old-school key forward, I highly recommend reading the following from the AFL website's going places.

    With teammate Dylan Hodge's ankle injury restricting him to deep in attack, McCartin played a new role, roaming further up the ground and took 11 marks.

    He's heard people question whether he is one-dimensional, and whether he would stand up to the aerobic rigours of back-and-forth modern football at the top level. He thinks he answered those queries.

    "I feel people might pigeonhole me as an old-school key forward who doesn't move outside the 50," McCartin says.

    "But when I get a chance to play up the ground I usually do it pretty well. It's more been about opportunities. That's been my role to play as a deeper forward and make a contest a bit deeper.

    "I'm not too bad about going up the ground," he says.

    "That game gave people a look to see that I can do it, it's just that the opportunity hasn't been there.

    "It can be a bit annoying that I feel confident in my own ability, but I'm not really worried about what anyone thinks, apart from the team I'm playing for."

    SORRY to push the point Demonlanders and I know many on this site don't rate my opinions at all but I gotta say McCartin is not just an old time stay at home forward as this article, already posted suggests. Of all the other TALLS mentioned, none really come close to McCartin in terms of Mongrel, Pack Marking and potentiality to become another Tom Hawkins (who he bases his game around). Consider this, If Hogan has further injury issues do we really want to go with another forward line containing Jack Fitz and Pedo?

    Nar lets go with some forward firepower which has the potentiality of Dawes, Hogan, McCartin! Throw in Howe as another option and Garlett and it suddenly becomes highly potent! The mids are sorting out nicely lets get a bit of old fashion brute strength and mongrel in, eh.

    I have said on other threads before that if you watch the current videos, they are just highlights and almost all the players look like magic.

    So three key factors you have to take into account are:

    1) What the kids personality like - only the club can really comment on whether players have already ruled out on the "no [censored]" policy.

    2) Where the draft gurus have rated them - this includes club recruiting officers and the Knightmare's and Paige's of the world who watch games far more regularly than any of us - although they can all get it wrong, quite obviously.

    3) If players are rated relatively equally, what positional needs do we have.

    This last one we all can comment on given we watch the Demon games and know our weaknesses.

    For mine, assuming we take Brayshaw as I'm sure we will, we are assembling a pretty strong inside-mid presence for future with Nat Jones, Viney, Tyson - so why would we take Weller as well?

    We have four listed ruckmen for 2015 - Jamar, Gawn, Spencer and King - so why would we take Wright for example to make it five?

    We have just picked up Frost to cover Frawley which gives us four pretty good tall defensive options - Tom Mc, Dunn, Garland, Frost - so why would we go for Lever?

    We have just recruited outside speed - Garlett, Harry O and Stretch - so why would we go for another classy outside type like Pickett or Laverde?

    We lack a classy left-foot defender - but Liam Duggan, Harrison Wigg and Corey Eills are all rated between 10-30 in draft so its a big stretch to claim one of them with pick 3.

    We have just lost Clark and while Pedo made a big improvement we only have two tall genuine forwards - Dawes, Hogan (sorry I don't rate Fitzy) - so why wouldn't we choose McCartin?

    Also Pedo and Dawes could be gone in a couple of years and maybe even Fitzy. What would our forward line look like then? Actually what does it look like with them?

    We would take Wright because he is also a forward ;) - but i'd prefer McCartin for his aggression

    Not only is he a forward but he also is a better kick than most of our current list including our four existing [notional] rcukmen!

    There is an article suggesting we will sign Newton from Port.

    If we do, I wonder if that leads to more chance that we will take McCartin if Saints take Petracca.

    Pick 2 is probably Brayshaw, a mid, Newton another, Stretch another, Garlett has been rumoured to spend some time in the middle as well and hopefully we would be looking at improvement from Tyson, Riley, Salem, Michie, Toumpas, Kent and JKH etc.

    Remember Lucas Cook ... You do NOT pick by position. I want the best players.

    Tex Walker 194cm, Jarryd Roughead 193cm...don't think this is an issue.

    Was stronger than full backs in the championships as an under ager.

    A lot have injury problems, didn't count out Judd or Selwood being good players.

    Most under 18's are one dimensional, one way runners no defensive game, inside or out etc.

    These things really are not at issue, the big issue though...is he good enough for pick 3?

    I don't understand this type of thinking. What would be the acceptable height??? 195cm? 196cm?

    Get a ruler and have a look at how big 3cm really is. If you really think that's going to make any difference, then you are so far beyond help it's not funny.

    Agree. In Taylor and Team and Roosy I trust. If it's McCartin I have no doubt it's because they thought he was the best.

    I thought Mahoney has already made it clear what they are going to do when he said they would be happy with a mid and a tall or 2 mids. Sounds like McCartin if Petracca is gone or Petracca if McCartin is gone. Either way is good as I chose to trust them and if McCartin works out we have a spine for the next 10 yrs with Frost and him replacing Frawley and Clark so we have a spine to build around.

    It all depends on their ability to jump 193 and has a good leap or 198 and can't get off the ground.

    193cm is bare minimum for a key forward.

    194cm is great.

    Reality is that its only 1cm.

    If he was 192cm I'm sure a lot of us would say he is too short.

    Chris Dawes is 193cm and seems on the smaller scale, while N.Riewoldt is listed as 193cm and seems a lot taller than Dawes. Or is that just me?

      A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

      What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around.It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
