To be honest, if Tyler was keen to play footy, it wouldn't feel right having him as a Demon.
I would have thought the Swans should pick him up.
However, if they aren't interested (nor the Lions though they aren't really Fitzroy, Roosy's old team) then it's open slather.

    Pick 50/PSD/Rookie pick I'd say but I wouldn't at all be unhappy if we did pick him up. He's got the bloodlines. If he wants it bad enough he'll be a player and Roos will have pretty little to do with actually coaching him.

    The swans had plenty of academy picks to take care of, the lions had 2 plus Scott Clayton's son as a father son and needed the picks for trades. So either side might still be very keen on him for the rookie draft. But they weren't keen enough to put him ahead of the guys they took.

    If he's a raw prospect then our new beefed up development team plus Goodwin will be the ones training him up.

    Brayshaw plays in the same TAC Cup side as Paul Roos son Tyler, who is eligible for the draft this year.

    The Sandringham Dragons flanker is an elite runner and seems unlikely to get to the Demons given they may have only three or four national draft picks.

    But Mahoney said the club was well equipped to deal with the conflict should Tyler become available at a pick that appealed.

    We have been through it before with (recruiting boss) Todd Viney and Jack Viney and it is also the same way we go about picking father-son selections, he said.

    We treat them like any other player in the draft pool. If they are highly rated and the player is available at a certain pick, they are the decision you make.

    Most likely a direct question from a reporter as he put 2 and 2 together and thought he had an angle to write an article.

    I'd do it just to ensure Roos hung around for the next 5 years.

    Not only that, but we have Viney, Stretch, Lovett on the way.

    Roos was arguably a better player than those guys, so for those big on bloodlines - it is appealing.

    And of course, Tyler could keep an eye on the young potential recruits coming up in the competition for us - the perfect recruiting scout.

    Don't pay national draft prices next year for a guy you could rookie this year! We've got the former Sandy Coach! Plus several others. The VFL (especially if Casey is half decent this year) isn't too onerus for most 18 year olds. And there's always the VFL reserves (shudder). If he's borderline I think someone takes a chance on him just like Adelaide did with Craig Kelly's son last year.

    This. Brisbane could have nominated him for father son, if he was nominated and no one bid on him he would have been taken with their last pick. He either told Brisbane that he doesn't want to play for them or he was judged not up to the required level. If he had told them he didn't want to play for them it would have been in the news. That would indicate that he's a rookie pick at best.

    Nothing against Tyler Roos, but I would have real issues with the club taking the coach's son as a speculative draft selection. Sure thing if he's a genuine top 20-30 pick, but anything outside that is asking for trouble. Particularly given our recent draft history.

    We are thinking of recruiting Paul Roos' son? Haven't seen anything written about him before this thread. Why are we considering him? Because he is the son of Paul Roos? Or can he play footy?

    I am quite disturbed by this. We need the best available footballer. If that's him great. But he is not a Jack Viney that has been in people's calculations for a number of years. (And yes I know TR is not a father/son pick).

    I don't think it hurts to have family connections at a footy club, as long as decisions are made wisely and nepotism isn't in play.

    If Tyler Roos is believed to have a lot of upside and is worth a rookie spot, then I hope we get him.

    I have coached my sons and while sometimes it has it challenges I can impart information to them with intimate knowledge of all of their strengths and weaknesses. I am sure this has made them much better footballers and has ultimately helped the teams.

    Roos is a shrewd character when it comes to this sort of stuff, if he is selected as a rookie there will be no nepotism. If he gets a game it will be because he has earnt it.

    That was a very impressive leap of logic by Dazzle to draw the conclusion we might be taking Tyler Roos based on some generic run of the mill comments made by Josh Mahoney

    Most late picks in draft/rookie draft never play anyway. Pick him up with one of the late picks we got in the jeffy garlett deal and give a kid a go who wants to be at the club.

    No great loss if he doesn't come on and bonus if he does.

    We can't afford to throw away picks on players on a whim. Every year these threads are loaded with 'Why didn't we take xyz, he would walk into our best 22' ....

    'Doesn't matter cos they wont play anyway' is a flippant thing to say in our position. I want 38 guys that are going to bleed for us, push like hell to get selected, keep pressure on everyone above them and train like their life depended on it.

    I am wondering if Roos has been hiding him in the hope of us getting him.

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.       The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
