What's 1 draft pick we have nailed in the past 10 years?

The terrible legacy of club destroyer Prendergast lives on. Overlooking Daniel Talia at pick 13 for Gysberts, despite most on Demonland hoping Talia would be there at 13, now winning Crows B & F on top of AA selection and AA squad selection this year.

This guy nearly destroyed the club on his own.

Contenders -

2010 - Howe at 33 McDonald at 53

2009 - Max Gawn at 34

2007 - Stefan Martin, PSD pick 3

2006 - Frawley pick 12 Garland, pick 46

2005 - Jones pick 12 Bartram, pick 60

2004 - Dunn pick 15

2003 - Davey, Rookie pick 3

You have to go right back to Davey to find a real 'nailed it' kind of pick. There are a few 'good value for where they went'.

But Jones is the only really outstanding player we've drafted in ten years, followed by Frawley.

We can hope that some from the recent drafts, including Howe and McDonald, might take another step and make us look back and say, yeah, we got that right.

While Prendergast was a disaster (no argument), his predecessor Craig Cameron was not much better.

I dont think we have nailed it since Scott Thompson in 2000 and we could not keep him.

An assessment of drafting can be done on the basis of expectations you have each pick you have. If you get it right a first round pick should get you a player who will be at least a backbone of your side with a successful long term career. 3rd round and later picks become a mixture of good fortune and a keen eye to find talent late in the draft. Your expectations are not as great and you may actual get access to a reasonable player and that pick can be seen as a success.

An Indicative Minimum Criteria (Assuming player is not hampered by injury or illness)

1st Round Pick (Pick 1-18) – min 8 to 10 year player with 150 to 200 games who is a cornerstone of the side.

2nd round pick (Pick 19-36) – 5 -8 year player with at least 100 games who is at the very least a serviceable player over a sustained period

3rd round pick (Pick 37-54) – 2 -5 year player that you get at least serviceable 30 plus games out of a player who fills a short to medium term gap in your side.

4th round pick ( Pick 55+)/Rookie/PSD– A smokie that plays at least serviceable 10 games.

Minimum Criteria may be achieved where a player has underperformed the prima facie criteria but the Club has successfully traded that player for draft picks/compensation that results in a net gain. (Notwithstanding the Club might have not used the draft pick well). Two examples would be Brock McLean and Tom Scully

Here it goes but I might have missed someone.

Craig Cameron was Head of Recruiting 2000 - 2007, Barry Prendergast 2008- 2011

2000 – Nothing (Unfortunately we lost Scott Thompson)

2001 – Nothing

2002 - Pick 26 Jared Rivers, Pick 55 –Brad Miller

2003 – Rookie – Aaron Davey

2004 – Rookie - Mark Jamar

2005 – Pick 12 – Nathan Jones, Pick 60 – Clint Bartram

2006 – Pick 12 - Frawley , Pick 46 - Garland

2007 – PSD - Stef Martin

2008 – Pick 51 Neville Jetta Pick 64 Rohan Bail

2009 – Nothing

2010 – Pic 33 - Howe, Pick 53 - McDonald

2011 - Nothing. Possible rookies in McKenzie and Spencer

2012 -2013 – Too early to judge but some promising players are there

Did not have Dunn who as a 1st round pick has been good in his last year or so but has under delivered over his career. A so so pick over the course thus far. I hope he adds value in his remaining years.

But from 2000 to 2011 its been an absolute train wreck when you consider some of the poor trades as well.

He did a horrible job, Redleg. I would actually ask above all else who actually hired him. He had never worked in recruiting before and had been a coach up to that point if I am correct. We up until this year seemed to have a knack of putting under-qualified and inexperienced people in positions they had no hope of ever succeeding in.

Couldn't help notice the size, strength, toughness and resolve of the Swans and Freo players and the Essendon /North players also for that matter. Total commitment and bodies on the line for 100 minutes. I hope we recruit more of these types.

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had
