Exactly, this sudden "we'll just take those picks to the draft" reeks of "oops, everything fell apart." In which case you have to ask, what the hell were we thinking put all our eggs in one basket? You can't honestly tell me there weren't genuinely good fringe players at Sydney or Hawthorn looking for more opportunities, or players at Adelaide/Freo/West Coast/Brisbane/GWS desperate to come back to Victoria, that we could easily have swayed over with the lure of Roos/$$$?

Have never wanted to be proven wrong so badly in my life, but...

Agree, if after having picks 2 and 3 in the draft plus loads of cap room we can't prize someone of value out of 17 other clubs, 2 of which are expansion clubs with many kids fitting the right profile including some who are surely looking to return to their native state and/or net a big paycheck then I don't have much faith in the future. We also have a highly respected coach and a stable succession plan which seems to have not helped either.

Even the Dogs, despite the fact that the deal probably won't get done have managed to have last years number one pick declaring he wants to go there.

Taking 2 and 3 to the draft plus the fact that pick 12 if we had got it was also intended to be used at the draft (according to Josh Mahoney) also goes against previous comments from those clubs that the fans won't endure another rebuild and we need to get better quick.I was certain we were going to trade at least one of the picks, we need to get competitive as fast as possible, keeping one pick and getting an established player with another seems a balanced approach, seems they have failed in getting it done.

We can't expect pick 2 and 3 or Stretch and pick 23 for that matter to dramatically improve us immediately so our improvement is based on the addition of Garlett, Lumumba and Sam Frost? Remove Frawley from the side and we are marginally ahead on last year but nothing to get excited about.

If nothing eventuates in the next day and a half then this is a mightily disappointing trade period from my point of view. Add to that we have had to rely on the medical of another club to diagnose a career threatening injury to one of our players - what an embarrassment.

I hope I am proven wrong by 2pm Thursday but as it stands there isn't much to get excited about for 2015. I am done with getting excited by 18 year olds who anyway based on Roos philosophy might spend a decent chunk of the season playing for Casey to work on the deficiencies that the under 18 system creates.

Fact is we need to build a side that is competitive in the short to medium term or we will have Free Agents walk out the door year after year.

Very disappointing MFC.

In the past three Octobers, there have been 27, 28 and 31 total trades made. Thus far, we have had four, one of which the MFC has been involved in. You could reasonably expect that there might be another 20-30 trades made in the next 31 hours. It's not a guarantee that Roos will pull a rabbit out of his hat, but I'd hold any disappointment about this trade period until 2pm tomorrow.

You know what would have been worse, DemonAbroad?

Selling those picks just to sell them.

We can't make mistakes, not with high investments like these picks, and getting back players that are not quite stars if the competition, or future stars like Tyson, is not the way to use those picks.

If we get two of the best talents out there, then great, let's get them.

At some point we are going to stop screwing up our early picks...

Yeah agree entirely that selling for the sake of selling would be bad

I just find it more concerning that it looks like we haven't been able to 'sell' the club effectively enough to convince anyone of note to get on board especially when $$ on offer should not be an issue nor is our ability to do the deal with other clubs plus we have an excellent coach and stable succession plan

Good summary mate, I agree completely. This trade period is looking like an absolute debacle, now we are left with one and a half days to go just hoping that we can secure Lumumba and Frost, two guys that were done and dusted coming to our club over a week ago!

Unless we can take Josh Mahoney at face value when he says happy to take the picks to the draft as of yesterday, hard to see a big deal coming through in this time-frame. Hope he is playing poker and I am wrong but I am not confident

Yeah but it happened with a week still to go, the clocks ticking here and things aren't looking up. Let's see what happens at 2pm tomorrow but I'm not confident.

Debacle?

A debacle would be what we have done AT THE DRAFT with high picks, not the inability to trade them.

Pretty confident the club had always intended to trade one of the picks, quite disappointing they have not been able to get the job done despite us being in a very strong trading position (the strongest in the comp in fact)

Have we improved our midfield? That's the debacle. I dont care about trading 2 & 3 or whatever, we still have other currency that could be used. We got Vince for 23 last year, we have underperforming guys with currency on our list yet the only turnover we've seen is our best defender and best forward leave and a small forward with off-field issues come in. I'm happy to get Garlett but they haven't even finalised the Frost and Lumumba deals which should've been done last week!

Correct

Nor have we brought in any leadership which I thought was unanimously agreed we need more of

Garlett is a follower if there ever was one, Lumumba, maybe some on-field leadership but mainly leadership in social/moral issues and Frost if we even land him is another kid

Its widely known to be a weak draft, even at the top end

Its not like theres a Chris Judd or Luke Hodge waiting to be picked

Petracca is widely reported to be going at pick 1, he doesnt exactly scream superstar

And based on Roos' approach towards draftees we can expect them to play nearly as many games for Casey as the Dees next year ar lar Salem

I thought Roos was on record saying we need to get better quickly and that we can go through another full rebuild or did I dream that? Looks rebuild-ish to me

You have hit the nail on the head - "sell the club effectively".

Pretend I am buyer - sell the club to me ! Interested to see how you can spin a tale that doesn't make us look like one of the worst clubs in the league . We are a particularly unattractive proposition. We are marginally better than Essendon which is in meltdown yet made the finals.

We have Roos and apparent stability and money to offer. Some supporters ( me included) saw an improvement last year and believe we are heading in the right direction. Outsiders see us as a club that finished second bottom, loses players to free agency and are still a fair way off playing finals.

Yeah, I really can't understand why players from other clubs aren't just falling over themselves to get to the MFC.

I don't think so Redleg. Currently we've only got one vacancy on our list, with Clark still to exit and Lumumba and Frost still to come in - that'll leave zero. After Tapscott, Strauss and Blease go we'll have three live picks. Pending other trades or delisting of contracted players, our draft position will be 2, 3, 23, Stretch, Jetta upgrade, pass.

Not a debacle at all if we end up with Lumumba, Garlett,Frost, Stretch,Petracca, and Brayshaw.

Im just not sure where the "debacle" idea comes from.

Forget Lumumba, Garlett and Frost (even Stretch as he is father/son and dare I say it - a project) - they are icing. The cake is pick 2 and 3.

We either trade out of 2/3 for a good player or we keep the really good draft picks and use them ( and hopefully develop the players better than we have in the past).

    GOLDIE'S METTLE by Meggs

On a perfect night for football at the home of the Redlegs, Norwood Oval, it was the visiting underdogs Melbourne who led all night and hung on to prevail in a 2-point nail-biter. In the previous round St Kilda had made it a tough physical game to help restrict Adelaide from scoring and so Mick Stinear set a similar strategy for his team. To win it would require every player to do their bit on the field plus a little bit of luck.  Fifty game milestoner Sinead Goldrick epitomised

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves.
