Tired?

Yesterday, we had more possessions, more hit outs, won at the stoppages and had either the equal of or better than WCE except from the umpiring decisions. We even had them on effiency (79% to 78%) rate except inside our forward 50.

Where we were beaten was in our running, particularly both ways. The question is whether we were trained to be able to run like the other clubs do this year or is it a programme by which Roos intends to develop the team in stages with defensive play coming first and the other things to follow. Either way, there are a number of personnel at the club who need to be replaced for various reasons.

From memory you may have a contact within the club. Recent posts of yours suggest that you're less than impressed with Roos and now you have suggested that a few personnel need to be replaced. Is this based on actual knowledge you have or just your observations from the outside? Which MFC staff members are you referring to? I find it staggering that a handpicked team by Roos may be falling apart at the seams already. In contrast to some of our playing list, off field stability is absolutely crucial for us. Hopefully I'm just reading too much into this...

Roos needs to replace the whole team over the next 3 years with actual AFL players.

What I don't get is , from the start of year the boys looked like they knew what they were doing when they had the ball in their possession

You could see a clear game plan, hang on to the ball switch play and attack from there.

The way we took the game on against Adelaide, Port, Richmond, Carlton, Essendon, Bulldogs, and even Sydney was great.

Dawes and Pederson were on fire and our forward line was functioning.

Then we lost it and went back to our usual selves, playing hesitant footy, and looking like they don't know what to do with the ball when they get it.

Right back to the turnover kings we were in the past.

I just don't understand how they can just lose it like that.

All our wins, and a couple of brave losses( eg Port in NT) all had the following key ingredients -

Ferocity at the ball

Great tackling and pressure

Intensity

We still butchered the pill and leaked goals from poor turnovers in each winning game, but those 3 things won us every game.

All 3 have gone missing in the past 5 or 6 weeks, maybe more! These are non negotiables for the great teams, not something you can switch on or off when you feel like it! Until we learn to bring this to every match we will never be a good team!

And the fact that the other teams missed a lot of goals.

Calm down. Tyson, Jones, Vince, Dunn, Cross, Pederson, Gawn, Jetta, Howe and even Bail have had reasonable years.

Overall it has been disappointing but best seen as a transition year under the new regime. Morale is important so how's not the time to throw out the baby with the bath water.

HB I think you have hit the nail on the head! Ferocity and intensity equals the old adage "Don't think, Just do!" If we could bring that to every game we would be so much more competitive. No we would not win a premiership, given our low level of talent but gee I reckon we would knock a lot of middling teams over. And there is no reason why we can't bring that ferocity to every game. Every time I have to watch the Hawks, that is all I see and somehow those guys don't get injured much, certainly less than our list.

So how do you bring intensity to every game? I have no idea with our list. We need another clean out on top of the seven years of previous clean outs.

Seriously I was reflecting with a mate yesterday about what we expected at the start of the season.

When we cast our minds back our expectations were fairly low. We thought five wins would be the maximium ( I could not see past four ) we actually had different games marked as winners. We hope for a reduction in thrashings and that was about it.

We both said our list was in a sad state and a large number would need to be replaced over 2014- 16.

We both had a list of VFL players listed but they varied a bit but there were really no surprises the crap always sinks to the bottom.

So we got pretty much what we expected with four wins a few close ones and not to many thrashings, also along the way we had the NGE's confirmed.

My view on why we fell away in the second half of the season is simply lack of numbers.

Once we started to lose players from our best 22 from injuries or loss of form there was no one to replace them.

AS has been stated by many the list is poor and as a result our complete lack of any depth shone through in the second half with form dropping and confidence went out the window.

I have said many times that the hole we found ourselves in at the end of 2013 was going to take years to get out of, now some see that as negative I always thought it was the reality of the situation.

Time I think has justified my position.

I am depressed like most on here but if we are honest with ourselves did we really think we were going to do a Port?

I agree with this but I am not sure we expected such incompetence. You can try hard and lose which I think we would all accept. But when it seems the players aren't trying (read running two ways) or you have Watts and Chipper who are both eternally frustrating with a frankly pathetic attack on the footy, same old mistakes from Captain Can't kick then I for one get extremely delusioned with a wretched club.

Tiring from a demanding game-plan that requires 2 way running

Something foreign to the MFC

Bingo.

Beat them in certain stats but every game we seem to get absolutely smashed in the spread, and eventually this catches up and the other team gets on top in the stoppages, and then it's all down hill.

No Jack they are just lazy and give up too easily. Its shows again and again in the games so far. No hard yards for a lot of the players They stop and jog when they feel they have done enough particularly when we have the ball!!

My view is that we had a couple of forwards produce in form games, and every other week of the year the forward line hasn't done enough.

It could also be that we caught a couple of teams off guard and managed to drag them down to our level.

Season to date we have kicked 176.187 (48.5%).

In our 4 wins we kicked 49.26 (65.33%). During those games our opponents kicked 35.66 (34.65%).

In our losses this season we have kicked 127.161 (44.10%).

The league average for the season is 52.12%.

There are a lot of factors that go in to those stats (rushed behings, position the shot was being taken from etc) but on face value they indicate that we managed to be pretty damn accurate while our opponents missed a lot of shots. I would also like to highlight that in each game we won, our opponent had more shots.

I think that losing the last game against Port Adelaide must have been a huge hit to the team's confidence.

You don't even have to go back to 1981 when we won only one game. Just compare this year with 2012 and 2013. By any measure, we are better this year than either of the last two...or 1981.

I would agree with have shown some improvement LDC but not sure about " by any measure".

The difference between now and 1981 is that in 1981 you could still bring in large list changes in one year.

That is way more difficult in 2014.

Now you can only make incremental changes each year unless a miracle happens and we know how often they happen.

Can believe the frustration, its warrented and im sick of losing.

This is Paul Roos first year as coach of LIST that is not at AFL standard. Have to clear more dead wood out.

Melbourne have lost 3 games under 12 points this year. lets just say they won those, and we are right now 7 wins, what would the feeling be? i imagine it would be something along the lines of: really improved this year, managed 7 wins, and restricted oppo scores and blow outs. Finally on the right track.

We have stopped and that sux, but the year has been better than last, and next year, it will be better than this year. Thats what is in front of us. Gradual improvement while overhauling the worse list in footy.

I agree Demon3 but I like most others we hoping for a bit better last month.

Seems I've unwittingly engaged in unsubstantiated hyperbole myself. While I'm guilty as charged, when I wrote "by any measure" I was referring (in my mind) to 2012 and 2013. Adding the 1981 reference was an afterthought clearly better left unthought in this instance.
