Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Paul Roos signs for third year

Dom Tyson, notwithstanding his recent public declarations about GWS players, has already been a great boon in this area.

His performance under Roos will be a shining beacon of hope for players looking to go to greener pastures.

Yes, and Vince for older players looking for a contract and higher responsibilities.

I reckon a lot of them feel they are constantly competing with each other for limited spots, where as someone who comes into the mfc is afforded time to develop and some more senior role models to learn off, a super experienced and respected coach and a solid board and decent prospects for the future, the ability to play a lot of games on the MCG, it's got to be getting a few players interest

If we have Roos, Thompson, and Senior Assistant in waiting next season - we are going to need a bigger boat...

And by 'boat' I mean 'money', and by 'bigger' I mean 'lotsa'...

the extra memberships and sponsoprships would easily cover the cost of Thompson you'd think

Although his role would be interesting, does he come straight in as senior coach while Roosy steps aside and moves into Director of footy or coaching for his final 2 years?

anyway its all speculation at the moment

Thanks GNF. The 3 years thing is obvious i reckon. I mean this stuff about if the club want to know he'll give an answer is just a nice way to annoy pesky journo and answer without answering. Control the message and when you want a nice little boost of positive news and some media coverage announce it then. Make the media dance to our tune not the other way around. A sign of the new MFC in my book (note: i'm not having a go at you at all - just in case you though i was being a smart arze).

Can't see Bomber being an assistant coach personally but there is no doubt they seem to get on really well if 360 is any guide. Stranger things have happened i guess.

Any more info on who the target players might be?

Bomba was quite happy being an assistant to Hird, and was hesitant to take the senior job.

I think Bomba just wants to help kids to get better, like Roos did with the Swans academy.

Quite similar blokes, in fact, and I think a good fit.

if Bomber Thompson was coming on board it would presumable make us an even more attractive destination for Cameron Ling

This is what I am hearing:

* Paul Roos will sign for a 3rd year............ its as good as locked in.

* There has been informal discussions with Bomber, as senior assistant next year. There is a good chance Bomber will end up at Dees but unsure of what his position will be in a succession plan.

* Paul Roos has been working very hard at encouraging target players he wished to bring to the club. This is all unofficial and via managers as season still on. I am told these talks are going VERY well.

* Confidence of Frawley staying is low. Club has been preparing for his departure. However, still not 100% that he is leaving.

Great news.

We will never find out who we are targeting until we sign them ala Tyson, Riley etc..

One thing I learnt about Roosy and PJ is they never give anything to the media.

I've consistently dismissed Thompson as the successor because it just doesn't feel right. I felt it may be too many chiefs and not enough Indians. Too many strong personalities.

But I do acknowledge the amazing chemistry between he and Roos on AFL360.

They are very much on the same page.

Bomba can't stay on at Essendon under Hird.

I just don't think it will be tenable and I don't think he'd want to.

He also didnt want the senior coaching role to begin with and took it over exceptionally reluctantly.

Out of sheer necessity really.

So what are Bomba's options?

Presumably he'd be looking at a position at another club.

Before the drug saga at Essendon he did express a joy at being just an assistant, shielded from the spotlight and the politics.

He has experience guiding a relatively inexperienced senior coach from the position of assistant.

Some would say with relative success.

Could he come to Melbourne?

He was quite comfortable taking a back seat previously.

Could he handle being an assistant to Roos? I definitely think so.

Could he be at MFC as an additional senior advisor to an inexperienced Ling or Hayes as senior coach?

I'd be surprised if he didnt relish such a role.

Guidance in addition to Roos, that would make Roos' imminent departure less significant?

I'm beginning to see it more and more as a possibility.

Maybe a pipedream, but I think it would work well for us.

I like Bomber Thompson and his record speaks for itself, but I really struggle to see how he fits in going forward. I thought the whole point of Roos signing with us was to teach the players the "Roos-mantra" over his tenure, and groom a successor to carry on the "Roos-mantra" after he left. Similar to his final years in Sydney. Bomber Thompson would have his own coaching mantra, a successful one YES, but clearly it will be different to Roos'. I'm not saying it's a bad thing if he signs on, just intrigued as to how it would work.

Maybe like our current captains, will have dual coaches, with Roos and Bomber both steering the ship..?

Who'd be a better development coach? Match day coach? etc...

maybe the beginning of a beautiful thing.. :)

Thanks GNF - I've doubted your stuff in the past but you can't deny you've been pretty close to spot on a a fair few occasions. thanks for passing on your info

There is a lot of water to go under the bridge with the Bummers saga - But I am warming to Bomber as the next coach with another succssion plan (ie ling as an assistant for a few years then take the reins)

Clearly Bomber would want to coach and it depends if Roos stays the 3rd year but I wouldn't mind it. I can't see Roos just packing up and leaving without finding a suitable successor... and I think Bomber fits Roos criteria (he has experience, can develop and has the same belives on how footy should be played which Roos is trying to instill in the Dees and on fox you can see the chemistry and Bomber and Roos have - there oculd be something there)

Anyway I am not too fussed about Frawley - if he stays all good but I kind of like the idea of getting a pick and trading it for another quality GWS mid (i don't believe well go after Patton, Boyd or Cameron as GWS won't let them leave)

Dees playing ok footy, exciting off field decisions to come I am starting to feel good again about being a Demon

Crazy to see how often they seem to be thinking along similar lines on 360.

I believe their respective coaching mantras would be a lot closer than some may think.

They seem to share many ideas about how to go about building a side, a game plan and a culture.

Love your source. A lot better than mine.

Bomber was asked about the Succession plan on AFL 360 earlier in the year and said he wouldn't work under Roosy under the succession plan.

Bomber made a fortune in a land deal outside Geelong and is set financially for the rest of his life. He doesn't have to do this gig no matter what he's paid. So it would only be for the love of coaching. Not sure that would be enough motivation for him. Also he's the same age as Roosy, 50 so does he want to commit to this coaching gig long term. We don't need another coach who's only going to do the job for 2-3 years. Does someone at his age and in his financial situation want or need to commit to a long term coaching gig. Especially as he was so burnt out at Geelong.

I can't see it working for Bomber. Maybe in some other capacity.

Very few people have commented on the fact that on Footy Classified Roosy made it clear his ongoing role at the Club would only be part time, he doesn't want a full time position and plans to spend time o/s each year. So doesn't sound like a Head of Footy Dept role. Sounds more like some kind of part time mentoring role. This could open up that position for Bomber.

I would have thought improving the list is the most important thing he can do for the Club long term beyond what he'll bring in his short term coaching stint.

Hope not, unless they are doing grass skiing. More likely Commonwealth Games. But hey, based on Jon Ralph's journalism he could have gone to Socchi now.

I like that there are machinations currently in progress . I like that the club it on top of this and is working forward to a new regime( coaching wise ) i.e the fd will grow along its present path.

Do i want Bomber ? probably not. He seems to be doing remarkably well with the cheaters but he isnt what id call 'desirable" ( Ive heard a bit from various sources and Ill leave it at that )

If he doesnt need the gig for money thats fine by me

Im sure there are other more fitting candidates.

Im not sure how Thompson could work in with the timeline forecast . I see Roos committing to a 3rd year and Bomber joining us as being at odds with each other. Doesnt ( for mine ) make a lot of sense

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
