Selection of Paul Roos successor

What i would love to see-

1) Roos to coach for the agreed 3 year time frame

2) Senior Assistant starting next year and to take over after 3rd year- Kirk, Ling, Ratton- they will choose the right person

3) PJ works his genius and Melbourne has full control over their 'seconds'- either as Casey Demons or standalone

4) Roos is head coach of this made team, Development Coach for Dees

He has said many times this year how important it is to set the standard in the twos so when they get their chance at the firsts they are ready. Sounds strange at first, senior AFL coach to VFL coach, but if they are the same club, all with the same purpose and direction, and Roos history with working at the Sydney Academy, he obviously likes this part of coaching and understands how important this element is to get right in todays footy!

I would love to see

Roos - Kirk, I just think he has a couple of years coaching in good systems under his belt that Ling doesn't.

Stone - Voss, get one of the greatest midfielders of the modern era working with our boys as midfield coach when Georgie decided enough is enough

and see if we can bring in Ling as a development coach.

I think Rawlings will put his hand up and it appears that the players like and respect him.

Thompson would be ideal if he has the desire, he has all the experience and may want to distance himself from Essendon.

Ling and Kirk I'm not so sure about I just feel we need someone with more experience,

Ratten has been too involved with the Carlton tanking and the media would have a field day if he came to Melbourne, the other club accused of tanking, I don't think we need that.

Worsefold knows how to win a flag and he's beaten Roos in one so he has the credentials, but we don't have the natural advantage they had over there . Still worth thinking about.

Crazy Vossy was doing ok when he got the flick, but I don't know if he would be prepared to adopt someone else's game plan.

I'm sure whatever happens Roosy will get the right man, he wouldn't want to have the good work he's done, undone.

Is Ling still running all those bars and bistro businesses in Geelong that Frank Costa set him up in, outside the salary cap of course? We would need a full time apprentice for Roos, one who is fully committed to coaching. Not sure that will be Ling.

That didnt have anything to do with Costa.

Long got involved with a group of local businessmen to be part owner of a handful of venues, and to my knowledge still is.

It worked for them to have Ling involved because his name alone brought additional exposure and people through the doors.

Not to mention the drive he had to make them succeed.

The Egde, Lamby's, Gold Diggers Arms, maybe another, can't remember...

Also had a carpentry business that I think he has since sold.

I would have thought Thompson and Roos subscribe to totally different gameplans. One is stoppage heavy while the other is a fast-flowing fluid style. For this reason only, I can't see how Thompson would be seen by Roos as his natural successor.

Brett Kirk is in his 2nd year of assistant coaching. So he already has the nod over Ling there. Give him two more years under Paul Roos and that would mean 4 years of solid learning from two of the coaching greats in the game.

The other thing that I think is getting overlooked here is that quite often captains and senior players fill an unofficial coaching role while they are playing anyway, understanding and explaining the game plan, providing the young players with tips and that sort of thing.

Brett Kirk to me is an ideal option, Ross Lyon and Paul Roos are not blokes to pick duds and they both clearly rate Kirk, and he would walk in knowing the game plan inside out and be able to bring some tricks he has learned from Freo also, plus the other thing which is less relevant is I would say Kirk probably demands less than half the salary Bomber would, freeing up money to maybe bring in Ling or Voss as an assistant as well.

Mick Malthouse is pretty good at making the obtuse remark. Admittedly, that might just be for the benefit of the media. The statements he makes directly to his players might be crystal clear.

Does anyone know when Brett Kirk's contract is up at freo, as we learned from Stuart Dew, a Successor position is not considered a direct promotion and as such Fremantle could block him leaving while under contract.

In Roosy's presser today he said that the club would not appoint a successor with a different direction to him.

Although I have previously stated that I thought Rawlings was the obvious choice, this comment would point toward Kirk being a front runner.

I'd say that's a bigger scale than just the game plan, more the defence/team first attitude and culture.

Watching this i felt Kirk really holds alot of the same values as Roos.
