Players to target at the end of the year

Recommended Posts

The only one of these worth a first round pick is Jack Steven.

in my own defence,

Lonegan ( former top 10 mid from a couple of years ago, hard bodied, ready to go) and a first round pick, effectively two top 10 picks for one )

O'rourke, probably not a top 2 pick, but certainly in the top 7 or 8, combined with a pick around 10 i think that deal is no worse than the tyson one, noone predicted tyson would come good this quick

some of the others were abit ambitious, but if we traded picks 2 and 3 and got Lonegan, zac clarke and a couple of first round picks i personally would be fairly happy with that, a good ruckman getting close to his prime, a ready to go top 10 mid, and a couple of early picks, another couple of Salems would be handy

I did.

The big thing this year is what pick we get. What's available at that pick if it is in the top few is a KPF, last year there was one, Boyd. There are clubs absolutely desperate for a KPF it makes the currency of that pick extremely high for the right club. Think Freo, Collingwood, Carlton for a few, Freo and Collingwood have top quality mids who they would have to trade is they were serious.

If we lose Frawley we will definitely need one ourselves from this crop.

I would like to get Clarke but I don't see him as a top 5 pick at the moment and we could also make a play for one of WC's talls.

No, very different. His exposed form was excellent and you may note that I've always been pro Tyson and have seen him as being a future A grader within the next couple of seasons. A few had a go at me for that.

The players listed above (except Steven) are at best 2nd rounders. If we have a top 3 pick it will want to be for an A grader given that it will be for a KPP this year. Last year the trades were for mids, some teams are desperate for a KPF. To give them that they will need to pay overs.

I guess my point is that by virtue of an unnatural and artificial depth of talent, there are high picks there without much exposed form, and if at another club we may rate them much much higher, but at this stage it's hard to judge.

Tyson was in a similar boat. Injury and more-physically-developed mids ahead of him, meant that he hadn't had a chance to show much, although obviously astute eyes saw something.

I'm mainly looking at O'Rourke and Longergan when I say this.

Wallis & Edwards proposals are a joke. Not a great fan of Clarke either.

Callum SInclair would be a good get that wouldn't break the bank, i reckon you are right and our early pick might entice a side like freo to offer up a decent deal, i believe we would be in Tex walkers ear also so that's a possibility

BIlly stretch would also be on the radar i'd say

Tim Membrey from Sydney would be worth a look. 188cm 90kg plays as a medium/key forward and is kicking goals in the swans 2s. Not likely to get a run in swans forward line in the next few years due to their over priced forward line that they have to play to justify what they spent.

A Gippsland boy that the could easily be enticed to come home for more opportunity recent form doesn't deserve to be playing 2's footy.

I think he went pick 47 a couple of years ago. Could trade for a similar pick and get a player with 2 years development at the swans.

If he could build the tank to show something as a mid then he would be worth it.

if i remember correctly he was touted as a late first round pick and got overlooked by most clubs, i just can't see why that would be any different now when he hasn't been able to crack a senior game

Membrey was a sub-190cm manchild forward as a junior.

With such a height disadvantage and not possessing blistering speed, I can't see him making it.

Couldn't see it then, can't see it now.

He wasn't like Rockliff, who was a FF but had an innate ability to win the contested footy and make good decisions, and he has not built the tank Rockliff has.

He was a lead and mark, or contested mark player. Not amazing when the ball hit he deck.

When everyone is skilled and 195-200cm that becomes a lot harder.

Hasn't been able to get a game because where would he fit in amongst Franklin, Tippet, Goodes and Reid, that and tall forwards take longer to develop. I think if he had an opportunity at a club screaming for forwards he might do well. Definitely wouldn't pay more then what he is was drafted at but would have to worth having a look at. I think there will be more then a few clubs interested in him come trade week

As a priority I would try to look at another tall, be it a key forward/defender/ruck.

I know that these are always the hardest thing to get, but with Clark gone and Frawley possibly gone, we need to bolster up our KP stocks.

Patton would be amazing, although I think he and Hogan are a bit too similar.

that is DEFINITELY a good thing

As for ROK, if he was desperate to keep on playing, we should be able to get him on a 1 year deal like Cross, with a view to him progressing into an assistant coaching role, essentially starting as an onfield assistant.

With the lack of a second runner, and young teams struggling to organise themselves onfield, I think it significantly increases the onfield value of wily veterans with good communication skills.

If he plays out his days at Casey, I'd still be happy to have someone like him drilling good habits into the kids.

At the expense of a Nicholson, Blease or Tapscott, I'd be fairly happy to have ROK.

exactly, & RO'K can play forward, small or 3rd tall, run thru the Midfield, add run from defence; or help out at Casey. Ideal onfield situation in our current position for One year.

He gets some nice $$$$$ for a season, & a few more games; But more importantly, He can really help to make a difference to one of the AFL's original teams at a time when it really matters.

we need as much toplevel culture help as we can get.

I like reading the Tex Walker whispers, very enjoyable..

My wish list is for 1 or 2 of Dom's mates to come home and want to come to us..

Shiel and/or Treloar please.. Haven't seen any of O'Rourke or Longergan.

Something about Patton rubs me the wrong way, not sure what it is, but if he kicks goals he can play for us I don't give a rats..

i was only responding to another post{maybe read the whole page}but to clarify, the poster remarked "we need a ruckman what would you swap for zac clarke".

i said id swap an unplayed unknown 19yo.

wasnt saying lets do it,was just saying that would get the deal done.

bear in mind PR is the better of coaches thats willing to trade a goodie for a gooder one.

I read the whole page when i commented, cheers.

I see what your saying. We have a number of players that would get that deal done, if its individual or combo.

However that particular deal is not attractive for us at all.

Hoges isn't really in that category of unknown/untried. He dominated the VFL goal kicking as an 18 year old and is rated among the top 4 full fwd prospect players. He played pretty well in his nab cup as well.

your right, hes untried on the big stage of an afl game, but I'm willing to suggest that he will be more than competitive when he does play.

It would be nicer if we could pick zac up through free agency if he was in that situation - Im not sure if he's under contract.

jazza, that would definitely get the deal done. I agree 100% on that. But please tell me you would also be fuming if that deal actually went down? Our days of being ripped off are supposed to be over!

Treloar of GWS is said to be unhappy over in the west sydney badlands and will be on his bike home at end of year.

IMO, he's better value than Scully and definitely worth looking at.

Ball magnet. Totally worth a fish.

Reckon Sheedy must be held accountable for the train wreck called GWS - would be sweet to pick up some of the spoils.

I reckon Saus has to take a lot of the 'credit'.

GWS have 27 players coming out of contract between now and the end of next year, we need to snag as many of the more talented ones as we can.

Jaskch, Buntine, O'Rourke and Tomlinson are all mentioned.

I would be interested in all of these

Ryan O'Keefe takes on mantle of Swans mentor

"But we've got some players there who have had some reasonably strong seasons to date and you've got to keep evolving as a football team, adding games, and hopefully the supporters can see some of those younger kids coming through and playing good football as well."

Some of that might be due to O'Keefe's contributions. His presence in the reserves, Longmire said, had been valuable for the club's second tier. Apart from "training as hard as he ever has", the coach said O'Keefe had been spreading his knowledge among the reserves on and off the field.

"His preparation and leadership has been absolutely second to none. He's been sensational and really important for what we're about, helping with the development of some of the players coming through. Whether it's on-field where he can address them or at the breaks or after the games or pre-games, his contribution has been enormous for our younger kids.

"That's ultimately what we want, the older players helping the younger kids - he's even Jake Lloyd's mentor - and to have him doing such a good job at that is a credit to him."

i wouldnt feel ripped off.

unknown 19 yo.

Pr the master of trade week.

looking at our past,id imagine more people would watch the player shipped out, rather than the player shipped in.

and of course we would have the stats gurus comparing on a weekly basis.

but as PR keeps saying, you have to give something to get something YOU want.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
