The continuing saga of Melbourne's injury list - 2014

Featured Replies

FWIW heard Viney talking to someone outside the ground yesterday before the game and he said he'd be back in a couple of weeks.

He is listed as concussion Must have been severe. Also Dawes is again listed at 4 weeks Whats going On?

As a physiotherapist, a lot of the assumptions and assumed knowledge on here are frankly garbage. The reality is that soft tissue injuries do not present as a perfect formula. At best we give a framework management and likely return date at the point of diagnosis. This crystallises as the injury heals. Then we start to push toward 'game standard' training, having done everything as needed. Most of the time the plan stays on track, but sometimes that push to the next level results in symptoms. So we reassess and re calibrate the management. And so it goes again.

It ISN'T a perfect system, and no matter how many forwards we have injured at once, and how many games we lose and by how much, it never will be.

I know a lot of you want someone to blame, someone to be accountable for the rubbish like Saturday. The extension being that if we sack them and get the 'proper' person in, they'll solve it.

The fitness and medical staff ARE NOT TO BLAME, so you're not going to ease your frustration and anger by wishing it were so.

Today Roos has said Dawes is a couple of weeks off, Jamar is going to play VFL, and Hogan says he is finally feeling ready to take on a heavy load again. But the aim for him is now... you guessed it... 4 to 6 weeks. So round 10 at the earliest for Hogan

I don't blame the medical staff at all. Injuries are what injuries are. I blame the information coming from the club.

IIRC last week Misson said Garland would have played for Casey on Saturday if they had had a game. Roos in the recent article said "Garland may play" (one week later).

Hogan's back injury is not soft tissue I know but Misson didn't rule him out for R1 when if first happened. Roos is now saying 4 to 6 weeks. How could Misson have been so wrong?

Dawes is either 2 or 4 weeks away depending on who you believe.

I think the club should just give conservative consistency. Anyway it looks like our major strength, a tall and aggressive forward line will perhaps have someone in it by the second half of the season barring further injury.

Problem with calves, having pinged them a few times, is that they appear to have come good quickyly and are ready to go, but often invariably when they are put to the test at 100% intensity, rip again. Assuming Dawes' injury is a calf and it is not spin for a knee or other problem, i suspect he has had recurrent tears or strains, maybe two, and now they are just giving him a month to make 100% sure he is ready. FWIW when i saw Dawes train at Goschs in February i thought he was moving terrifically well, so its very disappointing.

The case of gun cricketer Pat Cummins should give us pause re hogan. Obviously no idea te similRity in their injuries but Cummins has barely played and his lower back stress injury continues to reflare. The club really needs to take all precaution to get hogan completely healed. Cummins has played one test and 6 shield games in 3 years and other tall quicks have missed a shedload of cricket.

It's not hard. Garland could have played half a game in the VFL, then been pulled out, before being up to running out a full AFL match.

Now he might be closer to AFL match fitness.

No mystery there.

Because its a wait-and-see back injury?

Because Roos has pulled rank and made the decision to not rush Hogan as he's a long term investment, not to mention the scrutiny he'd face from media and supporters if he were rushed in now as the saviour.

He'll take it slow, get his body cherry ripe and probably make him come back through the VFL.

Yes, calf injuries commonly come with unwanted setbacks.

Is this a new thing?

Yeah, just not enough things to complain about these days as a MFC supporter...

The injury list decoded (thanks to the good people at Bletchley Park)

Available = 1 week

Test = 1-2 weeks

1-2 weeks = 2-4 weeks

2-4 weeks = 4-6 weeks (the TJ special)

4-6 weeks = 8-12 weeks

TBC = season

TBA = expect a retirement announcement

Indefinite = we're clueless.

As I predicted hogans back is 4-6 weeks away from healing let alone the training time missed and back through the VFL. We won't see him until second half of the season. By that time the 100 plus point losses will have destroyed any spirit remaining in the other players.

of course we all know we'll get the talls back for the 2nd half of the season

.....only to find most of the midfield are injured on 426's

Given our draw 6 weeks would mean back for the bulldog and richmond games. The bulldogs are probably one of the few chances we would have had for a win. hopefully in that 5-6 week the rest of the team can relearn how to take a chest mark, how to man up and how to kick the ball to each other going forward. if so we have a chance of beating the doggies.

Without wanting to labor the point one of the big problems with the club not not giving accurate information about injuries is the amount of confusion it can cause.

Case in point is this article about Hogan.

It says 'Hogan first experienced soreness in his back following Melbournes NAB Challenge clash with Geelong in Alice Springs in late February'.

It also describes his injury as chronic back soreness - which is strange, I would have thought if in fact he was hurt in the Geelong game. How has it become chronic in a month?

In fact we know there was problems before the Geelong game as a DL poster noted he was treatment on his lower back at the training session before it (should he have played?). And Jesse apparently mentioned he had some issues before the Cats game whilst on the footy show.

It all sounds fishy. And makes me suspicious of the club at a time when they need all the support and faith they can get. Perhaps he has not been managed as well as he should have been.

How could a player spend 18 months at the club only to not be fit for his first senior game after such time. How could a 20 yr old contract a chronic back problem? What is this club doing to these kids? He has not even played a game yet and he has a chronic back problem is asstounding.

It isn't great, that is for sure.. We should clean out more than our playing list.

Or, perhaps he has.

How could a 20 yr old contract a chronic back problem?

Well I don't know, what could a strapping young 20 year old male be doing that might give him back pain?

More pathetic presumption from posters on here. 'Chronic' means non acute. Thus, the injury occurs not from an incident but arises insidiously. It doesn't mean he's been labouring uncared for with a crippling pain. A 20 year old is susceptible to all sorts of injuries, of which stress reactions in the back are one. He's a huge unit on a still developing skeleton. Any amount of the normal load in training that all the others are doing by the way could present as an issue, based on an inherent vulnerability. This can happen because ' everybody's different'. Shocking I know. Still, those of you who want to push the mismanagement argument, keep going, cos ignorance is bliss I guess.

Dawes will play next week vfl or afl, gawn will play somewhere this week, jamar will play this week.

7 years on the bottom and majority of our talls are injured without even playing a game this year....I would disagree with you re mismanagement.

You do realise the medical profession has no idea what causes chronic back pain, don't you? That includes our doctors and fitness staff... it's not always black and white, open and shut case as to how this pain occurs and how to resolve it.

Increasingly, it's being accepted that in many cases, it is caused by psychological factors, rather than actual structural or muscular issues, even if a physical injury is the catalyst.

For example, the pressure and stress of being relied on to be the saviour of a football club...

Sauce?

Every media outlet is saying Dawes is 4 weeks away.

Hooray cant wait for Jamar to return

Personally, I would rather the club, whenever someone gets injured just say they are out for the season. That way, we don't expect to see them again and when they do return in only 16 weeks after their broken nail we will think the club is doing a good job in managing the injuries!

What's going on ?

We need to take a leaf out of John Longmire's book - re Kurt Tippett and his knee tendonitis and when he will return.

"I am reluctant to put a time frame on it".

Much better - tell the members absolutely nothing.

    Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

    Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

    The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

    Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

    The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

    It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
