No. It's an absolute guarantee and has been highly publicised that we will take Brayshaw or possibly Petracca if he's still available with either pick 2 or 3.

We may take one mid and one KPF or possibly two mids but definitely not two KPF's

Think buddy and Roughead

It's outside the square.

But they are stocking up on midfielders.

forwards are hard to come by just ask

The Bulldogs and us.

Wright (second ruck), McCartin (FF), Hogan (CHF) could all play together in a 3 prong modern attack. Wright obviously goes to the ruck and Hogan and McCartin would play as modern forwards do with McCartin still playing more close to goal on average.

But Dawes would likely hold his spot for a while given how long big guys take. And in the mean time we get little improvement and in the end we likely dump Dawes who's a pretty honest footballer.

We'd then get 3 gun forwards if we developed them correctly but what good is that? There's only so many inside 50's a team has with a gun midfield. With a poor midfield these guys would end up fighting for marking contests.

If I really was convinced they were the best 2 in the draft I'd take them, but barring that you're almost asking for one to fail through lack of development opportunity.

We go into the draft with two live picks and I'm backing Brayshaw and Lever to be the one's we take. Brayshaw has been a lock for quite a long time and Lever looks like he could be a great player with his impressive work ethic and athletic attributes (plus Roos likes the kid).

I am thinking now that in light of Roos' comments about developing our draft picks and not expecting them to be our saviours, that he will take 2 mids and let them develop. I think he might now target a KPF as a FA or trade next year.

Then again I could be wrong.

Think... 5 or 6 years for Wright to develop. After the AFLPA has successfully negotiated the reduction of the requisite years for FA eligibility, and Wright leaves us because we've sucked the whole time he has been at the club, because we don't have enough blue-chip midfielders...

Paul Roos may like the kid but I think that I will go with the popular view that we will draft Brayshaw and McCartin/Petracca as the two best available. Either way, our list will be considerably improved.

I agree its highly unlikely we will take two KPP however your statement is incorrect. The club has said all along they will take best players available.

Mahoney is even on record as saying that could be 2 mids, 1 mid and 1 KPP or even 2 talls.

Despite them saying that there is no way they will pass on Brayshaw.

Not after the 2012 draft.

We can take 2 mids with later picks, plus Brayshaw and Billy Stretch. It will come down to best available. If there was a second very good mid to take we'd take them. But just because Roos is suspect on drafting young forwards doesn't mean he won't let the recruiting staff do their job. I don't see Roos complaining about us getting Hogan. If McCartin is rated high enough we have to pick him.

Exactly, Roos was on the radio yesterday saying that the recruiting staff have the final say regarding who we draft, he just acts as a 'consultant'.

If a rebuilding club that has won 40 games in 8 years doesn't use pick 40 in the national draft that'll just about be it for me.

We have the best development coach in the AFL now in Brendan McCartney, and we're talking about possibly bowing out at a pick where even we have managed to find a Tom McDonald, Dean Kent and JKH over the past few years.

McKenzie and Evans must have some bloody incriminating photos of someone....

Melb select a 21yo left footed midfielder from the SANFL with pick 40. Has a solid body, good at clearance and won the port magpies B&F.

Sounds like a great get at pick 40 to me!!!

Well if the club has said that they will not be passing on Brayshaw then they might as well have said that they aren't going to be taking 2 talls.

We could have easily signed him and gone to the draft with pick 40 (and even pick 52 as well) with better list management.

SEN have published Brett Andersons mock draft from the Inside Footy draft special (which hit the newsstands today):

Mock Draft.

1. ST KILDA Christian Petracca | Eastern Ranges

Its a line-ball call but the Saints opt for the powerful midfielder in the hope that he can form a dynamic unit with Dunstan, Steven and Billings.

In the mix: Patrick McCartin

2. MELBOURNE Angus Brayshaw | Sandringham Dragons

Melbourne coach Paul Roos is an unabashed fan of the Dragons ball magnet and he fits the bill perfectly as a big-bodied inside midfielder.

In the mix: N/A

3. MELBOURNE Patrick McCartin | Geelong Falcons

Still in the mix for No.1, but shouldnt fall any further than here. Teamed with Jesse Hogan, theyd form a formidable forward pairing for a decade.

In the mix: Jake Lever

...

40. MELBOURNE Ed Langdon Sandringham Dragons

...

53. MELBOURNE (P/R) Neville Jetta

What am I missing?

Roos says we have picks 2, 3 and 40.

The Age says we have three picks (this mornings paper).

Brett Anderson has us with three picks.

With Newton we only have 2 ATM don't we?

Yep with Newton we currently only have 2 list sports available on our primary list.

If we pay someone out (e.g. evans/mckenzie debate) we would have an additional spot to use pick 40. If we then wanted to use pick 53 as well (and upgrade Jetta with a later pick) we would need to pay out 2 contracted players.

I believe that is where our list currently stands.

That's just about where we stand at the moment but I wonder if the situation can be resolved by not promoting Nev Jetta officially off the rookie list but promoting him before the season starts (when JT goes onto the LTI)? I understand that we've offered him a new contract and said we'll upgrade him but can this be done?

No.

We have said he is to be promoted and he will be promoted on ND day with our last pick.

Delist Evans and McKenzie but we pick them up in the rookie draft on their current payments and with JT on the long term injury list one gets elevated back to where they were. That gives us 2,3, 40 and 53?

Opens up two extra picks where there might be some talent, who knows and we pick up Jetta with a very late pick.

Yep seems the only way to go if we want 3 "Live" picks excluding Jetta

Time to cast Evans Or Mc Kenzie Adrift!

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
