Its Christmas season!
So what are choices over the holidays and why?
Sparkling's are very popular because of large dinners. Beer is great for the weather.

Give me your favorites, worst and any stories relating to a brand of alcohol.
Even go as far as what you ate with them!

Not sure they sell it in the Gat so Biffen may not of tasted the brew as yet.

My current favorite is Redback wheat beer (Matilda bay range) although many i have spoke to don't enjoy it. I find it has a lot of flavor and its very smooth.
To be honest, absinthe (Commerical green fairy) doesn't taste nearly as bad straight as vodka or tequila...

does honey whisky go well with cola? or is it usually a more with just ice drink?

You can drink it straight or with Cola.

A very good straight drink.

If I remeber correctly Redback was made in Fremantle when it first started out but not sure who ownes the label now or where its made. It was one of the first popular boutique type beers.

There was a time when I imbibed Absinthe,during my expressionist period.

Some of the Czech stuff has the real wormwood in it-cannot remember what brand.

Needless to say I felt compelled to cut off my ear and send it to a prostitute.

Postage was fairly expensive as it was "ear mail".

I'm pretty sure Redback was from Anchor brewery...it's ok, but there are plenty of better beers around these days... as a brewery I would think that James Squire probably turn out the most consistently good varieties. Having said that, I''m partial to the Japanese beer Yebisu...very smooth.

Tried a couple of nice ciders at a Wooloomooloo pub (The Old Fitzroy) on Friday... not sure who produces them (they were on tap) but one was simply called Cloudy Cider and the other Pink Lady Cider... both very tasty.

As for Absinthe...all I remember is something about Absinthe making the phart go Honda.

My weakness is The grape on all its forms unfortunately, red, white, rose! Not fortified though. Are there other types? if it is in a bottle I am tempted. Although on a hot night you might find me having a beer at The Rose in Fitzroy. Is that place the last of the Aussie pubs still going around as in untrendified and unhipstered so far?

I think you can only have a drink at the Rose and then go home. The Gatwick is more your lodging after you have had a skin full and a place for near do wells I believe and a good place to get taken out shall we say. Never a dull moment at the Gatwick in Fitzroy Street.

An old friend of mine John Mills (played keyboards with Spectrum and then Ariel) used to live in the Gatwick in the late 70's... he was a bit of a nerd... to the point of building a smallish (by the standards of the day) mainframe in his room. That was (and probably still is) one very strange private hotel.

I could start a thread on old drinking holes in thev80's; the Burvale, the Whitehorse in Blackburn seeing Whacko Jacko after training on a Thursday night in his white kaftan top at the bar. The Golden Gate on a Saturday arvo then down to the Star to finish off the night. All this was a shock to me when I retired from footy. Never knew people had such fun on Saturday afternoons.

The Rose is a great place for a beer, watched a Brisbane game there last year, was great seeing all the old Fitzroy faithful there still barracking for the lions.

Drink wise I'm a beer man, tend to get takeaway refills from the Thunder Road brewery. Got a good spread of beers there, tasty stuff

Beer. If Duvel is on tap I'm having that. Pilsner Urquell not far behind. Basically anything that has a taste.

I came across a shop in Paris that specialised in just absinthe. Shelves of the stuff. Definitely one of the better grocery shops I've done. :)

So lets say next year, im being forced to move out with my gf.

Shes chosen to locate to South Yarra and ill be going to RMIT (cbd).

Im going to need a new pub so i can come home at later hours.

I don't really imbibe much any more but my poison of choice has long been cannabis sativa. I'm also partial to some LSD though it's not something you can really take all that often, I wouldn't do it more than once a year and haven't touched it for close to 5 years. Cocaine can go alright on occasions as well but I've never really been a fan of MDMA.

If I'm drinking it's generally Johnnie Walker with a dash of coke or Mojito's/Singapore Slings during the summer. I don't mind the Moscow Mule either. Never been much of a wine drinker, the sweet ones are too sweet and the dry ones are too dry. Beer is great in hot weather but I can only have two or three before I start to feel bloated. Recently I've been drinking the Fat Yak's but I also don't mind James Squire's Hundred and Fifty Lashes. The Hoegarden (sp?) they have on tap at the Belgium Beer Garden in St.Kilda Rd goes down pretty well on a hot day as well.

Dont drink as much as in past life but still enjoy most beer and wines. Never a big spirit drinker.

Over Xmas had a very xpensive Riddoch's NZ Gammay probably one of the nicest wines of my life. Friend brought it and believe about$80 but worth it.

On the other hand I have found Bulls Paddock Sangiovese/ shiraz amongst one of the most interesting local products at a very good price $20 for me.

Of course we have the Beechworth Brewery range of Beers I have found the Celtic Ale good for my knees, dont know how that works but if drunk pre tennis knees dont hurt the next day???go figure.

Also we have some local Ciders and a very nice Beechworth honey and ginger light weight sparkling and great for an unsettled stomach.

we also have the luxury of the Milawa squash club membership which contains a number of wine makers on the list so we have plenty of sampling and

finally with my mate Michel Renoux we are often challenged to sample an array of local and international wines just to keep the palate tuned.

Its a hard life up here and we dont get out much any more.

So, the Gonzo part derives from a love of all things Hunter S Thompson and the requisite excesses? I was never a fan of smoking dope as I found it too antisocial for my tastes and so took the what was then referred to as, the juice freak route. LSD, mescaline (synthetic), psilocybin etc were all dabbled in, but still nothing could quite equal the alcohol in appealing to my extrovert nature. These days I indulge very little in anything, but still do enjoy the very occasional drinks session.
