Penrith the most valuable sporting brand in Australia. You've got to be kidding me. I don't know how they work these things out but if you asked me whether I'd rather own Coll, West Coast, Hawthorn or any of the other top AFL clubs or Penrith it wouldn't be a hard call.

Given 14 of the 18 AFL clubs made it, this should pose no great surprise. Only WB, North and the two freshies didn't make it. Belong St Kilda especially makes me feel disappointed.

That said, in the last 8 years Saints have played 3 grand finals, been quite successful. Given how poor we have been, I think we have scope to move up that leader board, the value of the MFC SHOULD be far greater than Port, Adelaide, Brisbane etc.

Jackson's starting to turn the ship and I'd love to have a look at this result in 10 years.

I've heard that Penrith Leagues Club is a massive venue and a social hub for Sydney's outer west. That's the only way I could see it coming ahead of the large AFL clubs.

It's because Panthers are all over Sydney. You guys wouldn't know living in Melbourne, but the main club is huge, they then have about another 10-15 small clubs all around NSW.

Net value is higher than any AFL club, but as it says, its only due to all the pokies and social attendees. Hence why Collingwood get the Tripe A rating as AFL clubs are more based on real members who attend games and support the team.

More than 50% of Panthers members are there to play pokies and don't give a rats backside about the Penrith Panthers rugby team.

I laugh at the NRL code here all the time. Last thing I would ever want to see is the AFL be anything like the NRL. Yuk!

Are you sure its the Melbourne Demons in the list??

Well, where the article discusses the AFL clubs, it does say "Richmond, Adelaide, the Brisbane Lions, Port Adelaide, St Kilda and Melbourne were also listed in the top 20", so you would have to assume that the answer to your question is "Yes".

Penrith's No.1 spot is the story of why GWS was founded.

Sure, most of the rest of Australia likes to imagine Western Sydney as irrelevant except for felafel-eater and cashed-up-bogan jokes, but there's a couple of million people out that way and they decide elections and pump the economy along in a big way.

I've seen similar studies of this kind of thing in the past which gave a little more information about what that 'brand valuing' estimate is based on. I can recall;

* attendances at games and supporter events

* purchasing and wearing of merchandising (with sponsor branding on)

* responses to survey questions on knowledge of sponsor companies and things like 'are you more likely to use a sponsor's product?'

* media mentions, especially TV appearances with sponsor branding

* overall expression of positive/negative feelings about the club (being everyone's 'second favourite club' is a help)

From what I can remember, it was the third and fourth items on that list that helped us a lot - during this crisis period a lot of our supporters felt personally grateful to the sponsors like Kaspersky and Hankook and had a notion that those relationships were 'meaningful in intent' rather than just a basic corporate deal. The club was also constantly in the media, mostly controversially but, always there and always giving the impression that the Melbourne Football Club mattered to people.

But, there's a huge room for improvement. On the touch-wood assumption that we are finally about to become a respectable club on-field and in terms of management competence, this is a very important few years for riding general goodwill at the same time as reclaiming a competitive status. 'Friendly Rivals' is the goal, we want people to be interested in how their team performs against Melbourne, enough to want to join us at our home games! :)

Most ARL clubs are now gaming /social businesses that happen to have a rugby team to justify their existence so that they can continue to make millions without any hinderance. AFL clubs are real football clubs that solely exist to play football and happen to have a limited gaming/social aspect to help pay the bills. More like a modest cash earner rather than as a core business.

As far as sporting brands in this country, why do the non club brands get a look in?

Surely there are people that support the Australian cricket team, Socceroos and NSW and Qld State of Origin sides that dont follow any of the Clubs mentioned. Are they valuable money spinning brands upon which advertisers circle and supporters buy brand merchandise

    Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft.
