2014 Contracts Thread

How come? He wouldn't be the first person delisted after two seasons. Think you need to have shown enough to prove that you're worth persevering with and I'm unconvinced, and you need to keep turning the list over.

I'm not wedded to the idea and I'm going purely of second hand information, but on gut feel it sounds right to me.

Fair call. I think I was hoping that he may form an up front combo with JKH.

Yep. Tapscott, Blease, Strauss, Nicholson and Barry all cactus at this stage, if I had to delist people right now. (Three top 20 picks turfed in one go. Ugh.) Spencer, Byrnes, Jetta® in doubt - these are the sort of ones that would be left until the last minute and will depend on salary cap (presumably not an issue) and how many spots we think we need to free up for trades, free agency signings and the draft. The rest should be working towards being signed.

Of course, this is a round 8 assessment - plenty of opportunities for the strugglers to change my mind yet.

Pretty much agree with you Nasher

I reckon Jetta might survive he is playing a lot better so far and is in the seniors keep doing that and some of the others don't get to push their case.

But as you say it is only the 14th May

anyone got an updated list? the one below had some things RPFC wasn't sure about.

I thought I would make a new one as the old one was getting a little long.

2016
Dawes, Grimes (RFA), Watts (RFA), Michie*, Vince, Tyson*, Kent, M Jones

2015
Clark, Trengove, Jamar (UFA), Garland (RFA), McKenzie, Howe, N Jones (RFA), Evans, Gawn, Fitzpatrick, Viney, Toumpas, Pedersen, Hogan, Salem, Kennedy-Harris, Hunt

2014
Frawley (RFA), Tapscott, McDonald, Blease, Strauss, Spencer, Bail, Dunn, Byrnes, Barry, Terlich, Cross, Clisby*, Riley*, Nicholson, Harmes ®, King ®, Georgiou ®, Jetta ®

* = Best guess of contract length. Would love confirmation...

This would be a good thread as a reference for contracts and also future list management if one is so inclined.

So far the games I have seen him play at Casey don't fill me with excitement.

IMO at present he is just VFL standard

Clark is gone of course, Byrnes, Strauss, Tapscott, Nicholson, Blease, and Barry will find it hard to get another contract.

Spencer, Bail, and Terlich should survive as 7 changes is quite a few.

I'd like to see Roosies list.

The one with everyone's name on it and how many have crosses in the columns beside them.

You know just like the one we had for girl friends.

Tapscott, Blease, Strauss, Byrnes, Nicholson - players who are right now as certain as you can be at round 8 to go. They need huge changes in their fortunes IMO, and I don't see it happening for any of them.

Spencer, Barry, Terlich - aren't as certain right now, but I'm not convinced yet. Barry is the kind of player who could be re-rookied, given he seems to have been something of a project player.

Of course, we can't delist everyone, so not all these players are going to go. Hopefully some of them surprise us all in the months to come, too.

Byrnes... right now as certain as you can be at round 8 to go.

How is a player who has played 6 of the 8 games in the season as certain as you can be?

Splitting hairs, I guess, but I don't think Byrnes belongs with the names you've listed. Someone needs to take his place in the bloody 22 before anything is certain.

Terlich is going no where, his manager is holding out for a better deal there is an offer on the table. He is a starting 18 player and highly regarded at the club. Tapscott is not done yet, can still make it at AFL level. Edited by Grimes is Great

I may have gone early on Byrnes, probably should be in the latter category, but I feel confident in Kent taking his spot and I also feel confident in not needing him to play that role next year. But you're right, probably ahead of the others.

Terlich is going no where, his manager is holding out for a better deal there is an offer on the table. He is a starting 18 player and highly regarded at the club. Tapscott is not done yet, can still make it at AFL level.

Starting 18? Based on what?

Right now, putting his injury to one side, he's not best 18, or best 22. And I'm not sure he's shown enough to warrant the faith you're putting in him.

How often do the best 22 run out together? To say someone's not in the best 22 says nothing, really - it certainly doesn't imply that they're expendable. If you must have a number, it would have to be at least 26. Beyond that you'd be looking for players to cut, subject to contract, potential for development, and possession of goat photos.

I agree, you can't just cut everyone. The list is 44, not 22.

That in mind, I still don't think Tapscott has done enough to warrant being anywhere other than in the firing line when it comes to delistings this year.

Based on what? On the fact that he starts every game as one of the 18 players on the ground. Last I checked, that makes him "Starting 18".

When was the last time he was omitted from the side due to form? (Has he ever been omitted due to form?)

Harsh, but I think fair.

Although, I think we'll give him more time.

Tapscott, Strauss and Bleasee especially need to show something.

I think Nicholson and Byrnes are long gone.

Byrnes is not just fighting players on our list for another contract - he is also fighting players Roos and co. are targeting.

At his age, he would have to have a dramatic increase in form to warrant another contract.

He is doing enough, with little competition, to keep his spot in the team. He will find it harder, with more competition, to keep his spot on the list.

Agree with Bail and Terlich surviving.

Spencer I'm not so sure. I know we have limited ruck stocks and Gawn finds it near impossible to string more than a handful of games together, but I'm hoping we can nab a ruckman at the end of the year.

The others you mention are certainly not doing themselves any favours. I'm still hopeful for Tapscott. Another one who's never been given a clean run at it.

Barry would surely be held on to for one or two more years. Came to the club as a stick insect and has shown some signs at VFL level. Remember that at very strong clubs, some kids don't get a look in until their third or fourth years in some cases. I think Barry will be given another contract.

Dean Kent's limited pre-season has gifted Byrnes' games. There is absoutely no chance he will be on the list next year, will either retire or be pushed into doing so.

I agree. Barry is coming from a long, long, long way back in terms of his physical stature. It is near impossible for any kid who would be lucky to weigh 50kg wringing wet to do well in competition against for grown men.

Give him a couple of years to develop physically. I think the Dees always considered him a project player and probably aren't putting a lot of pressure on him.

Time will tell with Barry and it's not like he is taking anyone else's spot, especially with the talent pool spread so thin these days.

Barry is only worth persevering with if Roos and co. think when he does develop - he will be a player.

If they don't - he will be delisted.

And they might even delist him anyway - and rookie him.

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
