Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

James is not teling us anything we did not already know.

The club WAS a complete mess.

I remember the feeling of despair at halftime Round 1 2012.

The MCC Reserve was booing the side off the ground.

I had not ever experienced that before. Only an hour before we had all farewelled Jim

I think you are getting your round 1's mixed up WYL. 2013 was the year they got booed off (and rightfully so). We were still in the match at half time during round 1 in 2012.

Ah... Rohan Connolly..!

I immediately assumed it was Chris Connolly.

Oops.

Anyway, re: Magner, I always considered him a player there primarily to make the VFL team competitive, to aid development.

Any AFL matches would be a bonus for him.

I'm just surprised the coaches hadn't clearly explained that to him.

I think it paints a picture of what we already knew that the club was very very ordinary at managing it's players. I was never a Magner fan but he definitely desserved to be in the squad in the guts. At least he would have smashed some packs having a crack.

I don't care if players whinge, it shows there human. Not all of them can be as cool and relaxed as a Jimmy Bartel or Tex Walker, lots are complete hot heads and it would be hard not to show emotion getting angry and frustrated when things don't go there way, especially in this case when Magner didn't know why it wasn't.

Let's not forget, they are at this level as most have an amazing amount of confidence in themselves and back themselves everytime, this is what makes them great. I love seeing them show there human side and with the constant ridicule they get for it we are left wondering why when players get interview they come up with the standard crap like:

  • We are just working on our game plan
  • I'm just try to do my part for the team
  • I'm just playing my role.
  • etc

Bring back the great days before all players were made to take "media training" and everyone ran there mouth and showed there true emotions blasting team mates and opposition players!

I don't think Craig would have been influenced by Neeld in regard to player value.

I think Jack Fitzpatrick is an example of that.

The fact that Neeld, then Craig & now Roos appear to have the same opinion of JM is more telling.

A journo intent on factual reporting would probably have considered that.

I know which game i am talking about...Neeld's first one. The MCC was very unimpressed at half time.

Yes we were 4 points down, but we were playing like rubbish.

12 months later exactly it was worse.

Colin's right. You were confused. We might not have been playing all that well but there were some real flashes of good play in the first half and we even snatched the lead before half time with a nice goal from Jack Trengove before a late goal to Merrett put us behind again. I don't recall any booing at the time not even from the members.

Whether you liked Neeld, Schwab, McLardy and the bootstudder of the time, please let's not distort or reinvent history.

As for the Jimmy Magner article today, whilst I thought he deserved a better go especialIy late in the season, I think there's more inconsistency in its telling than in the accusations against the coaches.

Magner's first game.

Drafting Daniel Cross really meant the end for Magner. Cross brings hardness and skill to our lineup whereas Magner really was all about brute force.

There was a lot of noise and anger around me on Level 2....we were right above the race..

People could see what was going to happen...the team structure was a shambles and never improved.

I certainly agree with that.

It was the first time i had heard the MCC get really peeved off and that included all of the 70's & 80's

Old guys in suits were giving it to the players as they walked up the race.

I was half ready for it in 2013, but not an hour after clapping Jimmy off

DELISTED midfielder James Magner has painted a picture of dysfunction and confusion at Melbourne as he attempts to understand his departure from the club.

"Having had such a disappointing year, I am sad to probably be leaving the AFL environment, but I am not so disappointed to leave the Melbourne footy club.

Bit contradicted dont you think. He complains he doesnt know why he was axed but then says he isnt disappointed to leave.

"Put it this way, before the AFL I have never played as a forward in my entire life.

"I was playing good footy in the midfield, I came second in Melbourne's 3km time trial, I was leading the clearances, and I was a little dumbfounded to be moved forward considering I had never played there."

Its called trying you in a different position. But you obviously didnt want to learn.

let me tell you James why you arent in our midfield plans.

1. Roos obvioulsy never rated you

2. You were a rookie and after 2 years they are the first to go

3. We recruited players called Tyson, Vince and Cross. Throw them in our midfield along side Jones, Viney, Trengove and Toumpas and you cant get a spot.

That was the vibe on Level 2, you are right...The breathing fire for Jimmy was non existant.

Jimmy wants an answer. Logic suggest it stares him in the face..

Jimmy...why are most players cut ?

I was never a fan but if what he says is true he has every reason to be confused and disappointed. If the club could not explain to him why he was not getting a game and why he was delisted it is shocking player management.

If he was told and is bitching then he's a dope. I find it easy to believe that Neeld failed to communicate but I'm surprised that Neil Craig and Roos could not articulate the position fully and accurately.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
