Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

2013 Player Review - # 12 Colin Sylvia

Demonland

Recommended Posts

Aside from missing three matches through suspension, Sylvia produced a very consistent season. It was the third time he has finished fifth in the best and fairest award, after his efforts in 2009 and 2010. A free agent, he has yet to commit to the club for 2014 although Paul Roos has indicated he is definitely a wanted man.

Hope he finds a place at another club

Colin unfortunately is the past due to his laziness and attitude

Move on!

I hope that he stays as he is hard at it and capable of turning games. Only wish that we would see more of it! Roos stated that he wants it and i trust his judgement. I think that he will stay and redeem himself in the eyes of many.

If Colin was particularly excited to have Roos on board he would have signed by now. No, I suggest he fully intends to open the door and have a look around first. he might be disappointed as to his options.

Im really totally apathetic towards this player now. Stay, go , whatever. I'll trust the clubs judgement ( now)

Col has been overseas since the day after Roos signed. Let wait and see where things are on his return. He had no opportunity to sign before he left.

If Paul Roos said to me "I want you in this side", I expect I'd have signed before he finished the sentence, but I accept that every footballer is not me. Of course just like Jack Watts, Colin Sylvia is entitled to use the system to see what's out there and I don't begrudge that. I jumped off the "excitement-disappointment-excitement-disappointment" rollercoaster with Col a while ago and after a few years of mourning the fact that he's not the star we'd hoped for, I have now come to terms with the fact that he's a solid B-grader who will pull out an A-grade on occasion.

I hope he decides that the best thing to do is to wear #12 for Melbourne for another couple of years.

Col turns up and gives his best attack on the footy.

He fails to run back the other way a lot which is something he wont be able to get away with under Roos.

He is peaking physically and will play his best footy in the next two years barring injury .

i dont expect him to do anything but contribute and maybe improve his defensive running by 50%.

We all love to shitcan Sylvia but he's a good ordinary footballer who will display Brownlow ability in 15% of games.

He is probably our most experienced player at the club-would be madness let him go unless we are sure of landing some very big fish.

well...actually he did ..Think about it

edit

Watts decision was all about Roos in a way

Sylvias decision is nothing about Roos per se and all about what Col thinks is best for Col and where he might garner more lollies and stuff in the marketplace. Thats why he hasnt signed. He's waiting.

As an aside from our ( club ) perspective Roos may well be able to extract a bit more. Thats not why Cols waiting GNF

Imagine if he just gets through a pre-season, could be anything (note - extreme levels of sarcasm in that comment)

We need Col and still not sure why so many people would be fine to let him go.

He received no cheap possessions this year and was forced to go in again and again to get his own pill. We weren't skilled enough to link up enough and was still good enough to get the pill 20 times a game.

If he went to a team with any type of skill or assistance in the engine room he would have received another 3-5 touches and all of a sudden people see him as a player.

He is often the first one tagged as well ahead of Jones. For those who think he wasn't having a crack this year you are blind. I did see him walk around a few times with his head down looking disinterested but when your down by 10 goals half way into the second I would be wondering what the point is as well.

I'd much rather keep Col then continue this ridiculous path of taking a punt on youth as that's worked out really well for us in the past.

He is actually one of a number of players who might step up but will do so only when others around him do likewise. It will be that synergy thing.

There may well be a Roos effect.

stay/go.. whatever, not fussed

It's that attitude that shocks me.

People salivate over Daniel Cross or picking up other fringe players who we have a slim to nothing possibility of turning into something, and yet here we have someone who has skill, power and is a threat to opposition teams we are simply 'not fussed' to let him go.

As much as I feel let down by Col at times after he has teased a few times with some cracking games only to be filth the next, I still feel we have let him down just as much after employing such inspirational & successful coaches in Bailey and Neeld.

If anything I don't blame him for wanting to leave but would love to see him have one year under Roos.

Definitely a keeper for mine.

If we hadn't all lived through the disappointment of what he should be and we could just accept what he is, then I doubt anyone would be so indifferent at his potential leaving. He is well entrenched in our top 10 players, has possibly his best couple of years ahead of him and has over 150 games of experience in a team with bugger all.

As for the "why hasn't he signed yet, Watts has" questions, Watts has 2 or 3 more contracts to sign in his career and 8 to 10 years to achieve some success. This is probably Colin's last decent contract and chance at getting to play finals. He should be very carefully considering his options, he'd be a fool if he wasn't.

why ?

A player like Nathan Jones probably has half the natural elite abilty of a Colin Sylvia. I know who id want if given a choice. one seems to zone in and out according to whim, seem a one directional player and has never proven the match winner he ought to be. Then there's jonesy who just gives his all and more and aspires to be better. Colin is a lazy shlt of a player in this respect as he doesnt work hard enough and plays well within limits never seeming to want to lift them.

if Col stays and Roos can get him revved up then we may get a few years of decent footy out of him. If he goes Im happy to take the compo

again.. i dont really care, The favours and fortunes of this club dont pivot on Sylvia

I agree completely, had had an ordinary run of back problems since the end of 2010..

A fully fit and motivated Sylvia lifts the dees by 20 percent.

It's funny how he lost interest when his mate Moloney was told he wasn't needed.. He only started to pull his finger out when Neeld left!

Moloney #stilladouchebag

I can't get over how quickly everyone turned on Moloney.. I don't blame him for leaving after what Neeld was trying to do to him. Best and Fairest clearance player to Tagger and 6 weeks in the twos.. I would of [censored] off too..

He gave what he could to this club..

Contract offer on the table - http://www.melbournefc.com.au/melbourne/news/2013-09-25/dees-offer-new-contract-to-sylvia

He was consistent without being great, but with the list in its current state, he's very much a required player imo. He himself believes he can improve again on his performances this year and under Roos, whose to say that he won't.

I think we were all expecting Moloneys midfield vacancy to open up opportunities for Trengove, Tapscott and co to step up, but no one really stepped it up.

Jones and Viney had a dip and granted Matt Jones made the most of his opportunities, but they all still would've got a chance with Moloney in there, Viney would've had more protection and Jones more freedom.

He should be aiming at improving, Sylvia is much maligned, but he has improved his consistency over the past few years.

I think there is no doubt Col can step it up, he should be aiming to break into the elite bracket of players, he appears to have all the tools.

Roos should ride Sylvia to get the absolute best out of himself, because if he could do that, we'd have a very good player on our hands.

Col coasts too much, just content on being a good player, it's time he tried to be a great player.

He really should be on Jones' level. He's good enough.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
