Ideal Draft/Trade/Free agency

I'm just wondering what people would ideally like to see Melbourne get out of the upcoming trade period/draft/free agency. Hopefully Christmas will come early and it can bring us a midfield and a fighting chance at being competitive on field in 2014.
Somehow I feel we won't be able to lure a top line player through free agency, and unless we get our player development right (Chocco please), we have no hope of turning young talent into top line A grade AFL players. That being said, one can only dream right?
Ideally I'd like to see...
-Receive a priority pick before round 1
-On trade pick 1 to GWS for pick 2 and Taylor Adams
-Trade Jack Watts to Carlton for their round one pick (likely pick 11 if they stay 8th)
-Pick up Daniel Cross as a de-listed Free Agent
-Allow Colin Sylvia to leave wherever he pleases as a Free Agent and receive a compensation pick straight after our round 3 selection (likely 39)
-Draft James Aish with pick 2
-Draft Nathan Freeman with pick 3 (bit of a risk but exactly the player we need)
-Draft Christian Salem or Marcus Bontempelli with pick 11 (depending on availability)
-Draft whichever hard bodied midfielder slides to our pick 22 (hopefully either Trent Dumont, Dom Sheed or Luke Dunstan)
-Draft the best available small crumbing forward with pick 38
-Draft a medium defender with an elite kick to give us assurance coming out of defense

This will bring in Aish, Freeman, Salem/Bontempelli, Dumont/Sheed/Dunstan, Adams, Cross + later draft selections for a loss of Watts, Sylvia and Pick 1. This should give us a really even spread of young midfielders to add on to Jones, Toumpas, Viney and Kent who i feel will come along in leaps and bounds next season, as well as Cross to give us some short term stability. Add Hogan and a crumbing forward and with a fully fit Dawes and Clarke i feel 2014 wont be a complete disaster! Better yet, it could see us moving quickly up the ladder!

Realistically we might have to throw in Jamar to sweeten the GWS deal and perhaps pick 39 to sweeten the Carlton deal. Both I'd be happy to give up in their respective trades.

Ultimately, I just want us to be aggressive over the off season and to not let any quality players go easily.
What would you like to see?

These are not rumours, they are opinions of media people all with allegiances to other clubs and a barrow to push. As Jackson said the other day the commission is there to make decisions in the best interests of the game not the individual clubs. The campaign against us is working overtime but I still think we stand a very good chance of getting a priority pick.

Totally agree, other clubs feelings will not come into this for a second, we could be competitive as soon as next year if we get a PP and trade it well.

the fact it goes straight back into the mix i think also really helps our chances

Andrew demetriou just stated on SEN GWS will be getting Tom Boyd when being questioned by Patrick Smith regarding GWS and their future

Until the independent commission grants us a PP that is the case.

Andy Maher this morning said that there is a strong chance Chris Yarran will be at Melbourne next year, from what I can gather he is well connected at the blues

What would we have to trade to make that happen?

Assuming we don't get a priority pick, my ideal trading period begins in the spirit of 'One red paperclip', which centres on Kyle MacDonald, who in twelve months began with a red paperclip and traded up to a two-storey house in fourteen transactions:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_red_paperclip

1. Melbourne trades Mark Jamar (a rather large paperclip) to GWS for pick 52.

2. Melbourne replaces Jamar's short term ruck role with Darren Jolly via free agency.

3. Melbourne trades picks 52 and 53 to Essendon, keen for more picks, for pick 43.

4. Melbourne trades picks 43, 89 and Lynden Dunn to the Gold Coast for picks 38 and 74.

5. Melbourne trades picks 35 and 71 to Sydney, backing their development, for pick 30.

6. Melbourne trades picks 30 and 74 to Carlton for picks 28 and 100.

7. Melbourne, with the threat of the PSD, trades picks 28, 38 and 100 GWS for Taylor Adams and picks 70 and trusty old 88.

8. Melbourne trades picks 18 and Cam Pedersen to a ruck-short Hawthorn for picks 16 and 69, agreeing to pay half his salary.

10. Melbourne trades picks 16 and 69 to Geelong for pick 14, still feeling guilty for the Gillies move.

11. Melbourne trades pick 2 to Gold Coast for David Swallow.

12. Melbourne signs free agent Brad Sewell to a two-year deal.

13. Melbourne heads to the draft with picks 14, 70 and 88, selecting the best available midfielder at 14, a state league midfielder at 70, and a gangly 218cm West African ruckman at 88.

The wash up of all of this is that Melbourne adds Swallow, Adams, Sewell, Jolly and three national draft picks in addition to their second pick in the PSD. Off the list go the traded Jamar, Dunn and the albatross contract of Pedersen, as well as the three retirees and the delisted Gillies, Sellar, Magner, Couch and Davis. Fill in the rest of the list gaps with masterful free agent signings depending on whether Jetta, Nicholson and/or Tynan get the chop, and Bob's your uncle.

Fair bit of trading for the sake of trading there, GWS won't use picks after about 30 imo, need to trim the list as it is so would be looking for a first round pick for Adams as a guess.

Pure fantasy Pants. The only believable part involved the gangly 218cm West African ruckman.

Seriously, I've always been inspired by the paperclip story and a draft week version was brilliant.

Thanks for the laugh. It's been a long day and I needed it.

Even though I know you posted most of this with your tongue firmly planted in cheek I actually agree that Swallow and Adams should be our focus plus another experienced, proven midfielder like Sewell or Cross or Thompson. I think it may just be achievable. I think the paperclip story analogy should be at the epicentre of a job interview for MFC Drating/Trading Boss. I'd give you the job!

You've actually inspired me Pants. I think all Demonlanders should be encouraged to create their own paperclip draft week scenario. I might have a crack tomorrow when I inevitably become bored at work. Mine might start with pick 101 and Trent Ormond-Allen.

People, this took me a lot longer than I care to mention! And yes, while it was certainly tongue in cheek, I've always had a sick fascination with moving up in the draft, or trades involving purely picks. If I had more time I would have moved that pick 14 up to pick 1 for the sake of the exercise but it was just taking too long. I also thought I'd give the old "3 bits of slop equals a dollar" a run with some of the aforementioned trades.

Vibes, I'll give you pick 100 for TOA and 101, but only if Sampson is thrown in.

RPFC, thanks for the Sewell heads up. I won't edit my post, but you can substitute his name for Cross.

Pick 2 to GCS for David Swallow

pick 20 and Mark Jamar ( understand he isn't worth alot but he's a mature ruckman and steak knives ) to GWS for Taylor Adams ( use threat of PSD if needed )

Daniel Cross as free agent

2-3 ready to go editions to the midfield as well as natural improvement that will take place under Roos will see it dramatically improve in 2014

Ha, I started to use Clay Sampson as my example but couldn't resist the double barrelled brilliance of TOA. That's a done deal.

Assuming we don't get a priority pick.

And after confirming we're delisting Tom Gillies, Troy Davis, Neville Jetta, Daniel Nicholson, James Magner & Tom Couch.

Pick 2 to West Coast for Scott Selwood & Pick 6 (Maybe swapping of some other later picks)

Pick 6 to GWS for Taylor Adams

Sign Daniel Cross as a free agent

Draft the two best midfielders available at Picks 18 & 34.

Draft the best young key defender at Pick 52.

Rookie Draft a long term ruck preospect and Khan Haretuku from Frankston Dolphins

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
