But... It really is hard to predict.

For instance, do the AFL want us to just be competitive, or do they want us to be a powerhouse club again.

If it is the latter, then it's possible that the AFL will give us pick 1, but if the AFL bow to other clubs, we'll get a later PP.

I think mid-first round would be fair. We can still use that either in a trade for Adams or we could probably get another handy mid such as Sheed or Dunstan as one will likely slip to that number. I feel that with pick 1 there is too much pressure on the club on what to do with it whereas a mid first round pick gives us more options.

If we got picks 1 and 3, If they'd take it, I would trade pick 1 to GWS for pick 2 and Taylor Adams, then use 2 & 3 on the best midfield talent in the draft.

One extra pick wherever we get it will not make us a powerhouse. Be it Pick 1, 5 or 20.

That said... a pick at the start of the draft would turn the fortunes of the MFC around faster purely on it's trade value alone.

I still favour a mini-draft pick option rather than an actual pick in the draft. I think that gives us the best chance to trade with established clubs (Geelong, Sydney, Hawthorn etc) who might be prepared to let a player go if it meant getting access to a top line 17yr old and developing them in their system for a year. I think that Crouch and O'Meara have proven to be a big success due to the way they have been introduced into the AFL system, We all know how Hogan is developing, and Martin sounds like he will be a gun too. The AFL may have stumbled onto a very good initiative with the mini-draft concept, and I would like to see it continue... in the form of part of their equilisation strategy.

Priority pick means first pick to me.

And to me.

For a club previously that won insufficient games over 2 years it was pick 1. We are in that position now, are being tipped to lose to the bottom side this week, have been described as pathetic on field and have been down for 7 years.

While the AFL have said the automatic right to the PP has ended, they have reserved the right to award it themselves, based on circumstances of a club at the relevant time.

If they use the criteria previously used and feel that we fit within that criteria, one would have to assume it is pick 1 we are talking about, or some other form of draft assistance that is at least the equal of pick 1. Pick 10, 20 or 30 is not the equal of pick 1.

I think the AFL have to give us this type of assistance if they are serious about us improving and becoming competitive.

Of course the pick alone won't be the panacea, but it will be one of the vital ingredients, along with good coaching, proper player development, smart drafting/trading, adequate football funding, proper administration of the club etc.

I have said before, if we don't get the maximum assistance this year, no club will again. The AFL don't want to have that restriction.

Consider this, when we got Scully compo, we cashed out there - whilst the Bullies got bugger all for Ward, who looks 3 times the player Scully is.

On top of that, we got Viney for an absolute steal.

All the cards have fallen our way the past few years in terms of being lucky - or assisted by the AFL with the Scully compo.

Now, these sides have to sit back and watch us received the number 1 pick, after we've already had a lot of breaks.

So, I see why opposition fans are frustrated.

All in all, it probably just highlights our development - or lack thereof.... Because, surely it's development and not recruiting, Trengove did look a legitimate A grade gun when drafted and even in his first year and now he looks like an absolute plodder.

One, and the #1 pick that year bolted two years later. We should have been given pick 1 in return, but as it was, the only reason our compensation was so good was that we went unexpectedly down the toilet, helped in part by losing a midfielder we had just invested pick 1 on.

For pick 1, I'd take a McRae or Stringer plus their 2nd round pick, or I'd take Clay Smith plus pick 5.

We may have to throw in maybe a 3rd round pick as a make weight.

That's a more realistic scenario.

Pick 1 (Boyd) is worth a lot more to the dogs.

GWS won't be giving up over the odds to get it.

They've got the basics of their forward line in place and just want to consolidate their talent.

Do we deserve draft assistance? No, no team does, however the AFL has given draft assistance to many teams in the past. History will show that the automatic priority pick for lowly performance was the stupidest thing the AFL ever did. The pick being given at the whim of the commision should have always been the way to go.

Do I want our team do get draft assistance? You betcha, and the fact that it would upset the other 17 teams is one of the main reasons I want it!
